I used to follow this guy for the best info regarding injuries. He says maybe Mahomes could come back in a couple of weeks with a brace, but may go in for surgery. Surgery means six to nine months.

This is better than the "Thanks Obama" meme.

When Mahomie went down and they were looking at his knee, my first thought was an ACL tear. I've noticed something about him, about the way his legs are put together. He's a bit knock-kneed. That's a lot like how women's legs are shaped. The lower leg splays out a little from the thigh instead of being straight up & down. It's typical for women, but kind of unusual in a man.

Women athletes have an unusually large number of ACL tears. Basketball players, especially. It's almost endemic among college players. I have a good buddy whose daughter plays D-1 softball for Coastal Carolina University and she blew out her ACL last spring. The way women's legs are shaped with the lower leg not being directly under the upper puts more strain on the ACL ligament, especially when they jump and land from that jump. I saw a segment on it one time; I think it was on HBO's 'Real Sports'.

Mahomes has that same leg shape. IMO, he's always going to be at a slighter greater risk from an ACL tear than most football players. And now that he's damaged his kneecap, weakening the knee joint, that risk is likely going to go up.

Just my layman's opinion. I'm not a doctor (although my father was). I don't even play one on TV.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes dislocates knee, could play through at significant risk
By PROFOOTBALLDOC
OCT. 17, 2019 9:04 PM
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ night ended with a patella dislocation after a quarterback sneak Thursday against the Broncos.

By video, it was clear his kneecap was dislocated (out of place) to the lateral (outside) of his knee.

Thankfully, this is not a knee dislocation and there no nerve, artery or ACL injury.

However, it is still significant.

Television replays showed his knee locked, and he could not bend or straighten it. A reduction maneuver was required in which the Chiefs medical staff put the patella back into place.

Amazingly, Mahomes walked off. But that doesn’t mean this is not a big deal.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ night ended with a patella dislocation after a quarterback sneak Thursday against the Broncos.
The injury is a tear of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL). Most times for professional athletes, this requires surgery, as the kneecap becomes unstable. It is possible to try to rehab and return this season with a brace and delay surgery until the offseason, but that is not a plan that comes with guarantees.

It is possible to return in three to four weeks after swelling subsides and strength returns. But even with a brace, the risk of re-dislocation is high, and the risk of subluxaton (slipping transiently out of groove) is even higher.

Trent Williams tried to play through this injury and couldn’t. Matt Stafford had a similar injury in 2009 and returned in three weeks. He did have surgery in the offseason. But Stafford is more of a pocket QB. Mahomes would have to alter his game to improve his chances to finish the season without surgery.

Fortunately, the other ligaments are fine.

If Mahomes opts for surgery, the recovery timeline is 6-9 months. He should make a full recovery, assuming he did not suffer any significant articular cartilage damage.

Knowing how football players like Mahomes are, he is going to want to return to play.

Know how football management thinks, the Chiefs will want to protect their superstar long term.

Mahomes is a young player.

Returning would be admirable, on the surface.

But imagine if Mahoms doesn’t have articular cartilage damage now, meaning he could make a return at 100 percent next season but decided to play and he re-dislocated the knee and this time knocked off a chunk of articular cartilage? That could affect his career in the long term.

The Chiefs and Mahomes will have to weigh these factors. From afar, I think he will definitely need surgery and that it might come sooner than later.

Yeah, that was my immediate thought too. It was crazy to have him try a sneak on that ankle, where multiple 300 pound men are guaranteed to fall on it. Or his knee.

Thought Reid was supposed to be a coaching genius?

I don't know. 42 year old Brady sneaked for two touchdowns last week. You can get hurt on any play, especially the way Mahomes plays. Sticking this one on Andy Reid seems like a stretch. Don't underestimate the sneakiness.

Enough with the announcers and their weekly, "Mahomes is able to make those throws because he was a baseball pitcher." Lots of quarterbacks played baseball. Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray played BB. Dan Marino, Troy Aikman, and Colin Kaepernick were pitchers. I don't recall hearing, weekly, about how they are/were able to make the throws because they were baseball players. The guy across the field last night, Matt Moore, played baseball. Moore played SS and third base, positions that lend themselves to more sidearm and odd throwing motions than a pitcher.

Rant over.

Maybe, but the guy already had a bum ankle, and he's your best player, your franchise guy. Not worth the risk is what I'm sayin'. Give it to a "disposable", low-paid running back and let him plow into the line for that half-yard. That's what those poor bastards are there for.

Chad, I'm getting ready to head into enemy territory on Sunday. I'll be attending the Dolphins/Bills game. If I don't make it out alive, I have instructions to have all of my Dolphins gear sent to you. (I have a lot of cool stuff).

The weather is looking perfect - Sunny and 65 degrees.

I'm sitting behind the Dolphins bench. Should be fun sitting with our fellow Dolphins fans as we #TankForTua .

I'll probably eat myself into a food coma while I'm there.

I'm guessing he has 10 million ($$$) reasons to enter the draft and be the first pick. If he plays another year and gets injured, his career is over before it begins.
