Well, it's a serialized sci-fi show on a broadcast net. What would you expect?

When I see shows like this on broadcast networks now I decide if I have an interest, and if I do, I assume that it will be a 13-episode limited / mini-series that may not have a tight ending. Know that going in and enjoy the limited show and careful as you exit the ride.

I enjoyed the show, but I'm OK with it being canceled. It ended in a good enough place, even if they did tack on a little cliffhanger in the hopes of renewal.

As a TV-PG rated show centered on a 10-year-old girl with powers and a feel-good family vibe, it made no sense for this to air at 10pm. It probably would've done much better in the ratings and survived the chopping block if it were an 8pm show. There also seems to be no reason why this can't be moved to Freeform, Disney+, or Hulu. It has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes (100% with top critics). It's cancellation isn't a huge disappointment to me personally (too many eye-rolling moments), but it just seems like it was set up to fail by the network from the start.

I agree that this show feels like it would be a good fit for Freeform. Probably too expensive for that network, though.

Because I watched all the episodes after recording them on my DVR (usually days later), I didn't even realize it was a 10pm show. That seems crazy. There was nothing in this that couldn't air at 8pm and maybe catch some more 'tween and teen eyeballs.

We discussed what a bad idea it was to schedule this show at 10:00 earlier in the thread when it was running. Made no logical sense. It's almost like they wanted it to fail.

Ever since Disney acquired ABC, they haven't had much of a clue about how to program the network. Which seems strange, because they seem to be doing well running their other acquisitions from FOX, as well as the Disney Channel Group.

I agree that they really dropped the ball on Emergence, which definitely didn't seem to be a good fit for a 10 p.m. Tuesday slot. And this happened after they spent lots of effort and "mouse money" into hiring showrunners Tara Butters and her partner to develop the show for ABC!

Somehow, there seems to be a marked difference in Disney's whole attitude towards the OTA network, which probably is a "tell" that they believe streaming media to be the true future of television; it wouldn't surprise me if they end up unloading the ABC network to another big media company not too long from now.

And don't forget how they kept skipping weeks. Three random weeks were skipped after the first four episodes aired before the month-long holiday hiatus.

Some of these series feel like the networks are just fulfilling contractual obligations to a studio, producer or showrunner they may want to work more with on future projects. Throw them a bone of a 13-episode run and paycheck with minimal effort on the networks part. They wouldn't mind catching lightning in a bottle success, but they are not going to bend over backwards to make it happen.

It wasn't a great show but it really clicked with me. I'll miss it.

The young actress who played Piper was good. We will be seeing more of her. Allison Tolman deserves a show that lasts more than a shortened single season.

Shows are programmed by people who have been replaced. New people need old shows to fail in order to justify their jobs. The worse an old show does the better the new programmer will look with a success. Poor system.
