What's in it for the affiliates, then?

This is a really big chance to drive viewers to the much-more-profitable local newscasts. "Big fire in midtown, right now. Complete details after the game." "The six schools with the worst drug problem. Does your kid go to one? All this week at 6 and 11." For local affiliates, that's gold given the sky high viewership numbers for the Super Bowl.

Even worse is if a couple of Nielsen families watch on DirecTV versus the local affiliate. Given the already-too-small sample size, that could produce ratings double-digits below what was promised to advertisers forcing expensive rebates.

So, again. What's in it for the affiliates?

UHD SDR only on ATV4K last week, not sure about this week, haven’t looked. I had to switch over to my backup old Roku to see HDR.

The Apple TV 4K is not HLG capable, which is the HDR format they are using for these broadcasts.

As stated previously in this thread and elsewhere...

No, the TNF FS/FN app stream is using HDR10 as of last Thursday's TNF game (using HDR10 allows them to support more device platforms sooner).

(It was (incorrectly) presumed/assumed it was going to use/using HLG since DirecTV and other MVPDs were receiving HLG feeds, which led to false/incorrect claims about lack of streaming device HLG support).

Roku was sending/displaying HDR10, not HLG...I know the original broadcast is HLG, but that is not how it came through on some Roku/other devices.

FiOS also showed the game last week with HLG...I wonder if anyone would notice the difference between HLG and HDR10 in a blind test...although since HLG is the native broadcast format I'd prefer watching it like that...

No change for AppleTV4K, still 4K SDR. Roku is 4K HDR as it was last week.

yup, I just switched back and forth between my FiOS 4K channel and the ATV Fox Sports app and no HDR10 on the ATV...the FiOS feed looks noticeably better with HLG...usually Apple is the first to get the top end features so I'm surprised that Roku is outputting in HDR10...then again maybe Apple likes native applications and doesn't want to force HDR10 when HLG is the native output

the HLG feed looks much brighter with more pop...the ATV feed looks a lot dimmer

The HDR is noticeably better for the Roku Stream as well (compared to AppleTV4K). It could be in the pipeline, but all anyone can do is guess on the “why”. I really hope we get more games next year. If the NFL offered it for streaming I’d subscribe easily.

Man, the quality was awful on the Fox sports app. It never got above 2mbps for some reason.

I did a free trial for Fubo and the quality is amazing.

Game looked great on fire stick it just froze constantly and missed entire plays. So I went back to my Apple TV. It doesn’t look as good but it still looks better than cable and it doesn’t freeze.

I watched it on my TCL 5 series for a few minutes via the Fox Sports app and I wasn't really impressed. It was playing in HDR but the bit rate kept dropping. Even when it briefly stabilized at full bandwidth I didn't notice much improvement over our local OTA feed. I could notice some HDR highlights on some of the pre-game fluff but that was it.

TNF on Samsung q90r with ROKU ultra

Picture quality last night was fantastic using fox sports app on ROKU ultra and Samsung q90r. We have solid 120+ mbps internet connection so it was very smooth. Lagged the directv (sd) feed by approximately 10 seconds. I have not yet tested ROKU ultra W/ fox sports app versus directv TV UHD feed (upgrade to 4K mini in progress) ...... what is the consensus, is the directv feed better?

How would I know if I'm getting the 4K/HDR feed of the football game?

I downloaded the FOX Sports app onto the Amazon Fire TV 4K, signed in with my Youtube TV account, and the football game did look better (not blown away though) than the YouTube TV Fox channel feed, but I couldn't find anything to tell me I'm watching the 4k/HDR version. For example, I can watch the 4k/HDR version of The Grand Tour, push the down button on the remote, and it tells me that it's UHD/HDR.

I have the Fire TV 4k hooked up to my Denon receiver which goes to my Samsung KS 8000 TV, if that info is needed.

Thanks.

Amazon is 1080p SDR I believe.

It should be like any other HDR stream that triggers the HDR mode on your TV.

As we all are, since 4KHDR playoff coverage is a big indicator of a 4KHDR SuperBowl.

Fox isn't exactly forthcoming about its specific plans for further 4KHDR playoff/SB coverage, and it may be last-minute disclosure/communication (much akin to TNF this season).

Without it, we'll just have to check the FS/FN app guide/schedule the day of their playoff games for the 4KHDR badge/tag and/or the stream itself.

Firstly, you should see the yellow 4k UHD badge on the game tile within the Fox Sports app. Then when it auto-plays, your TV should switch into HDR mode. I believe you click "watch now" or something like that to actually go into the show. Then, on my LG TV, I hit info and it says 2160p, HDR, and bt.2020. As Ph8te said, the indicators are the same for any other HDR show.

If you are not seeing that little yellow 4k UHD badge on the show tile, then i believe the app is not detecting that your TV supports 4k/hdr correctly. This was the case on my LG B6.

For all we know the app has been enabled since version 3.20 for both HDR and 5.1 audio and its just a matter of them making the encoding modifications server-side (its what happened with the HDR, since there was no app update immediately prior to last weeks first HDR-enabled stream - it was still on 3.22 from a couple weeks before that).

FoxSports followed through on its promise for HDR for TNF streaming but didnt with 5.1 audio. Not having the 5.1 audio working for the last TNF game doesnt bode well for getting 5.1 audio for any potential further 4KHDR coverage this season.

Historically and relatively speaking streaming services (as an industry) often delay/lag their 5.1 audio implementations (video quality improvements before audio quality improvements).

Its the last remaining piece of the FoxSports 4KHDR streaming puzzle, be unfortunate if the first 4KHDR SB (if it happens) lacks 5.1 audio.

Interesting and makes sense. Noteworthy that my LG C9 said it was receiving PCM audio from the Roku Streaming Stick+ with the TNF transmission, even though it is set for Bitstream
on that HDMI input.
