That AMAZING scene where Sally Field meets her younger self at the wedding (and ends up literally arguing with herself!) was superb, one of the most effective applications of CGI in recent memory. Looks like they must have taken images from her 1960's Gidget TV sitcom to create that sequence, and it really worked.

And the end of the episode, where we finally meet "Lev"--so touching, and so sad!

I agree that it was an amazing scene that definitely benefited from an actress of Sally Field's caliber. But I was actually disappointed they didn't use a CGI version of a young Sally Field. The actress who played the young Janice, Tara Lynne Bar, didn't really look like a young Sally Field to me, though she's definitely passable as a young version of Janice (photo in spoiler below). I'm guessing that because young Janice will be making multiple appearances throughout the season according to IMDb, they went with having her played by a young actress rather than going the CGI route.

Spoiler!

EDIT: Young Sally Field in spoiler below

Spoiler!

I'm surprised--I'll have to watch it again, but it looked to me on first viewing of a couple of angle shots that they replaced Tara's image with CGI of the young Sally Field from the 1960's. It's tough to avoid the "uncanny valley" effect when they try to do this for more than a few seconds though, and since they went to the trouble of hiring another "almost look-a-like" actress, I'm sure we're going to be seeing more "arguments with herself" in the near future. It will be interesting to see how well they handle voice matching. Sally Field is a great acting talent and is so fortunate that she still looks somewhat similar to her 1960's self--I'm sure William Shatner is jealous of her!

The Shat could look a lot younger and more closely resemble his Cap'n Kirk era self (not to mention improving his overall health and living longer) if he'd just lose about 80 lbs. Too much Romulan Ale, I'm guessing.

It was almost distracting to me at first how little it looked like her. (I've attached a screen shot.) But after mentally chalking it up to the vast age difference (and height difference attributable to a bride likely wearing heels) and the costs of doing a CGI version for such a long scene, I just went with it. Still a great scene.

Indeed a beautiful and touching episode, especially the heartbreaker with Lev at the end. Jason (6’4”) makes Sally (5’3”) look absolutely tiny. And who was that little pixie looking into the window in the final scene? Have we seen an image of Clara yet? She gets episode 5...

This is a clever, creative, and completely captivating show.

This show is so weird, but also wonderful.

Interesting that Richard E. Grant is clearly voicing "Commander 14" yet none of the characters have seemed to pick up on that yet. At first, I assumed this was all Octavio pulling a con. But now that the two characters have both been in the same room together, is it twins? Commander 14 was wearing a fake beard that covered much of his face, so could it have been a stand-in actor playing a recording?

I like how the tone of each episode differs depending on which character is being highlighted.

Agree that this is an amazing show - when Grant says 'picture yourself as this person', I do. Janice's story brought a tear to my eye as I related the 37 years married to my beautiful wife now that I'm a proud grandpa as well. Fortunately we haven't reached that sad point that she has (well, subject to upcoming corona) but just watching her story brings back the same kind of memories.

Absolutely must-watch TV to see where this goes. I can relate to everyone so far. Have no idea where they're going with this wacky alter-ego Octavio/Commander stuff, hope Jason can deliver something equally meaningful in the end.

Yes, creative gems like this come along rarely, and are a joy to watch while they last. Unfortunately, like Lodge 49, they tend to fade away too early...

It never crossed my mind that Richard E. Grant is voicing Commander 14. They don't sound alike at all to me.

I just checked IMDB, and there is no listing for Commander 14 in the cast list, so you might be right!

Yeah, I didn't pick up on that either. Josh must have an amazing ear for voices. Or he, you know, read it on the interwebs somewhere.

Same here. Grant has a fairly distinctive voice. It actually confused me at first as to the name of the Grant character we had already seen, Octavio.

Still enjoying this show immensely. Can't wait to see if they indeed found Clara next week.

"...Fredwynn is also you if you are currently locked in the trunk of my car." LOL!!!

Fredwynn is definitely you if you think everything is a conspiracy. He would definitely not be happy with the way things are going in the real world THIS week!

I also can't wait to see what happens with "Clara."

Another great episode. I laughed out loud multiple times. This show is so well written and perfectly cast. I almost don't even care where all this leads plot-wise. The journey is so enjoyable (which may end up being one of the main points of the "game" for these characters).

At least we have each other!

For a former music major who is also a low-rent audiophile, I have a hard time identifying voices. But, I don't think I'm the worst.

At work, most interactions are via conference calls.

I used to work with a guy, and despite our obvious vocal differences (his voice was about an octave lower, and he's African-American while I'm Euro-American), people used to always mix us up on the phone.

More recently, I work with a guy who has a Ukrainian accent, while I have a Maryland accent. Again, we get mixed up!

It's not real. If Clara was snatched up by Octavio and the Institute, how did she leave all those elaborately hidden messages, including the one about her being snatched up?

BTW, does anyone notice how Philadelphia itself has become what amounts to one of the characters on this show? For those not familiar with the City, there is so much more to the place than just the usual tourist destinations of Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, and the Art Museum where that famous "working out on the steps"scene in the original Rocky feature takes place.

Those giant wall murals that you see on the sides of the rowhouses and stores in the Fishtown neighborhood are real, and definitely worth a visit. Yeah, it can be a tough town and it has a certain "scruffiness" that sometimes puts people off (mostly just fans of visiting sports teams), but Philly is way ahead of the curve when it comes to the concept of art in public places. Good to see the City of Brotherly Love being portrayed as something more "real" than what we see it as on a show like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia --which is actually shot almost totally in Los Angeles.

This week's ep was the most surreal yet. Impossible to know what is real. It seems like some kind of weird psychological test.
