Since it's Bay Hill week, why not stroll down memory lane. Many have a personal Arnie memory. Proud to say, I have personal Slammin' Sammy, Arnie, and Jack memories. And two good ones out of three ain't bad. Sorry, Sam.
One of the good ones, 1978. Up close with The King. Can't think of much to say 'cept, "Arnold, what yardage will be used for the Bay Hill tournament next year? He promptly and politely answered, "Oh, probably 6700 to 6800."
1979 would be the first year for Bay Hill hosting the Orlando event. I was somewhat surprised at his yardage, since I played the course in '77, and noted at the time it could be a big boy test of well over 7000 yards.
Yesterday, thinking of this exchange more than 40 years ago, I searched for something on the 1979 Bay Hill tournament, and found this.
"Palmer's Site Easy For Pros"
The reason Arnold Palmer's face is red is that there are so many red numbers on the scoreboard, representing birdies and eagles. In his debut as the sponsor of the Citrus Classic. Palmer is sneered that so many players are embarrassing the golf course he had so meticulously prepared to be a back‐breaker.
FWIW Bay Hill yesterday played 7,342 yards. Still not long enough for a couple of pros. ha ha
Go Arnie. Thanks for the memories.
