as of last night on MLB.com

Commissioner Rob Manfred conducted a conference call on Monday with all 30 Clubs, and in a statement released later in the afternoon the league announced that Opening Day “will be pushed back in accordance with that guidance” from the CDC.

In the statement, MLB said it “will keep fans updated on decisions regarding plans for the 2020 schedule in the days and weeks ahead,” adding that the Clubs remain committed to playing “as many games as possible” once the season begins.

“We will continue to monitor ongoing events and undertake the precautions and best practices recommended by public health experts, and urge all baseball fans to follow suit,” MLB said in the statement. “MLB extends its best wishes to all the individuals and communities who have been impacted by the coronavirus.”

45 days at COVID-19 peaking in the US would be around May 1. Then, how long 'til "out-of-the-woods", 60 days? Assuming "Spring Training 2" would be initiated near the end of the "out-of-the-woods" period, that would mean an August-something start for the season. That start ain't gonna happen, therefore the wise bet at this point is that MLB is a no-go for 2020. What are the odds for that again?

Were it not for Dr. Li Wenliang, things would be much worse.

I don't think they'd go for "spring training 2", there would maybe be a week of practices to work into the season. And I do think they'd still go for a mini season even if it was pushed back to August. Something is better than nothing. Maybe a round-robbin, each team in each league plays each other for one 3 game series. Scheduled double headers on Saturday or Sunday. Cancel the playoffs, just the world series.

Around July 4th weekend would be my best guess.

Here's hoping either picture comes true. Both would indicate a world on the mend.

One of many current COVID-19 concerns is the million or so "immune" Spring Break'ers filtering back into their communities. All age groups need to remain vigilant. Short-term patience is long-term gain.

There is every chance that we'll declare "back to normal"! And then it hits us again, until an effective vaccine is created and mass produced. I even saw a comment from someone, I can't remember who, that we do not even know whether people can get it twice or not

This could be disappointing, depending on how much comes out of "development of an industry-wide plan for compensation". These guys need more help than MLB's millionaire babies.

"MLB says minor leaguers will be paid through April 8"

Quote:
MLB said it would continue to work with all 30 clubs on the development of an industry-wide plan for compensation beyond April 8 because of the shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.

I saw the 1990 Reds World Series game vs the Oakland As. This was our last appearance in the fall classic.

32-Game Regular Season?

very interesting proposal by ESPN's Keith Olbermann...he's saying only inter-division games...that way the best rivalries such as Yankees/Red Sox and Dodgers/Giants would remain intact...every game would matter and teams who meet in the playoffs would not have played each other...it would make every game a major must see event...

Manfred was on CNN this afternoon, mute button firmly depressed. During his comments caption appeared, 'Season's Cancellation Would Be Catastrophic.'

What a schmuck if caption was accurate.

I have been watching Ken Burns Baseball on PBS. It is still great the second time. Baseball has changed so much since it was shown in 1994. Amazing how hard Comissioner Landis came down on the White Sox players. The Astros get off free.Anyway the old pictures and films are terrific.

MLB roids and cork were fun, too. Barney Fife to Charles Atlas. Bats exploding cork at the plate. Corkage fee? Ejection.

from Ken Rosenthal: “ MLB is prioritizing public health as it examines all possibilities, sources say. The season, at least initially, could be played in Florida or more likely Arizona, where spring training parks are more concentrated. But the logistics of quarantining 30 teams in one area would be extremely complex and potentially controversial, sources say, requiring local, state and federal government cooperation and resources that might be necessary to fight the coronavirus pandemic.”

Biggest problem is going to be the fans, can't see stadiums more than half-full if that. Likely going to have to start in front of empty stadiums because they're not going to sign off on crowds with this stuff.
