Toslink optical cable

Hi there. Has there been any advancements with optical cable? I know HDMIs have gone from 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 etc. wondering if optical cable has been the same?

As far as I know, there have been no updates to the technology with optical cables.

I just checked ebay. apparently some cables can do 7.1 now? I just upgrade to a new receiver so I'm running the tv sound through the receiver

I had a receiver from 2001 that would do DTS-ES and DD-EX, which matrix a rear surround, through its digital inputs, but it was not true 7.1. I still don't believe that it is possible, and that the eBay listing was maybe not being completely forthright. As far as I know there is not enough bandwidth to do so. I am totally willing to be proven wrong.

If you are running the optical from your TV to your receiver, I don't think your TV can output 7.1. It will be up to the receiver to use ProLogic to create the rear surround information, which can still be pretty good. I believe that the only way to get discreet 7.1 is through HDMI, or through 8 individual analog cables.

The HDMI hardware specifications have been updated (HDMI 1.4a, HDMI 2.0b, etc) but cable designations, at least for the last few years, have only been labeled as High Speed HDMI. The is no such thing as an "HDMI 2.0" cable. To see which HDMI protocols the high speed cables support you need to read the cable description. Optical audio hardware specs haven't changed much. They are still outputting discrete 5.1 and possibly lossless Atmos in some cases. The cables are just a data pipe and are tested to see if they can carry the latest HDMI hardware protocols. However, testing, unless tested and certified by an ATC, is inconsistent in how it is performed (non-standardized protocols).
