Found a weird bug with Nuvo line-in & P10 keypads

Just an FYI post.

Customers home was pre-wired and speakers installed in the kitchen & back porch; no other equipment installed.

I sold them a Nuvo P100 for the kitchen & P200 for the back porch, each with a P10 keypad.

Each zone also has a TV, and they wanted audio from the TV to the corresponding zone.

So a line in on any Nuvo device is global to every zone; that means the TV audio connected to the P200 is available as a source on the P100 as well.

I setup the kitchen as Favorite 1 on the keypad, and the back porch as Favorite 2 on the keypad; again its global, so selecting Favorite 2 in the kitchen gives you back porch TV audio.

The problem is, when you select the line-in from the P200 to play on the P100 via the P10 keypad, and vice versa, it turns both units off.

I called Nuvo tech support and was told this is a known issue with the P10 keypads. I’ve never connected more than one analog source, so I’d never encountered this problem.

The only thing I could tell the customer was to not select another zones audio on the keypad.

Thanks for sharing. Did they mention if they were planning a firmware update to fix?

They did not. Tech support said it is an issue with the keypad itself. My guess is that there haven’t been enough complaints about it to make any change.

I feel like though it has to be an issue with the buffer built into the player unit, and not the keypad. I know if you try to listen to an analog source across multiple zones that it activates a buffer, and I think the fact that it trying to send this source across the network to another player is where the issue lies.

Maybe the hardware on the newer P4300 or the upcoming P5xx is more robust for handling this.

Thanks. I have a 4300 that I need to install which will replace (3) 200 units, I can test once that's done. Although at that point I'll probably use the Toslink adapters for a digital input signal, not sure if that would make a difference.

Yes I’d like to know if you can test it.
Thanks

I finally got around to installing the P4300 in place of my (3) P200's yesterday. I have cable box audio via Toslink as Line In 1, which is the Kitchen TV audio. I set that as a favorite so I could select it via the P10 keypad in zone 3 (master bath). To test what I believe you're stating above, I had Pandora playing in zone 1/Kitchen. When I selected the Line In to play in zone 3/master bath, it played the audio from the cable box, and zone 1 still played Pandora. When I selected Line In to play in zone 1/kitchen, zone 3/master bath shut off, and cable box audio played in the kitchen as I would expect it to. I was then able to select a different source for zone 3.

As a side note, for the Line In inputs, they are just 3.5mm inputs on the P4300, and they give you (3) Toslink to 3.5mm adapters in the box. It's just a housing adapter, so the "laser" (I know don't look at it) spits out the 3.5mm end in to the input. So the Inputs (and Line Outs I believe) are truly analog or digital, which I thought was kind of neat. I'm sure this has been out there for a while and I've just never seen them.

Hope this helps, let me know if you'd like me to try anything else.

Matt

In the setup I had the issue with, both the P100 & P200 shut off when doing exactly what you described above, and I had to power cycle them to get it back online. So i do think it’s an issue with trying to send an analog input from one device to the other over the network (which is wired) and not the P10 keypad. I’m glad to know it works with the P4300; thanks for reporting back for me!

That is the same sort of input they have on the P300 pre-amp also. It will also be available on the new P5100 & P5200. And yes the line out is also digital.

I have an install this week for a P3100 & P500 sound bar; I’ve got a keypad for the P500 and for each of the P3100 zones. The last update added the ability to stream the P500 input over the network to other player devices, and I’m hoping I don’t have the same issue. It’s going to be at least another month before we have networking equipment installed to setup the system, so I’ll report back how that works out also.

I was thinking again about what you said; when you selected the line-in within Zone 1, Zone 3 then shut off.

That’s not actually supposed to happen. Zone 3 should’ve kept playing the line-in. What’s supposed to happen is that a buffer is activated within the P4300 and the stream should be played in both zones. Somewhere in the manual is a note about the behavior of this, saying that you will notice audio delay if using the zone for TV audio in more than one zone at a time.

Sorry it just clicked for me..... but something is indeed wrong.

If you could, try selecting Zone 1 & 3 from within the Nuvo app, not the keypad, to play the cable box and see if both stay active.

Just tried that, same thing happens. As soon as the cable box audio is played in a different zone, it shuts off in the first zone. The more I think about it you're right, this isn't how it's supposed to work.

Looking in the app, the only thing I can see that relates is under Advanced, there is a Multi-room Latency option that you can change to low, medium or high, mine is set to medium.

If you get a chance, call Nuvo tech support and report the issue.

Maybe if enough installs start complaining they’ll figure out what’s going on.

Forgot to come back and report on this ....

I experience the same issue when I set the P500 line-in as a Favorite on the P10 keypad.

The P3100 feeds kitchen, outdoor, and bathroom speakers. I tried to route audio from the P500 over the kitchen speakers via the keypad, and when I do, it shuts down the P3100.

So this isn't a bug with the P10, but with the Player Portfolio entirely correct?

Idk.... Nuvo says it’s the P10. I asked if the P20 has the same problem and no one has responded to me.

Their answer was “just use the app.”

I use Nuvo mostly because of the keypads.

Nuvo has a live webinar later this month for 3rd party integrations. I registered for it so I can bring this topic up.

Go.bluevolt.com/Legrand

Click the “events” link; There is one on Jun 26 for Nuvo subwoofers and another in July that’s actually the 3rd party integration. I signed up for both. It’s the same people doing each one.
