Automating my House with Crestron Home OS 3

Hi All,

I am implementing Home OS3 for my house outside of the theater which for now will remain as a seperate Crestron System with it invoking some functions on the Home OS3 system. Thy theater has screen masking, a Barco Thor, Lumagen, 16 x 16 HDMI 2.0 switcher etc.

The list of equipment that will be controlled by the Home OS3 system includes:

  1. 10 Sony XBR 9XXE series or later TVs (IP control)
  2. 2 Samsung TVs (IP Control)
  3. 10 sources for video (2 DirecTV 4K Genies, 2 Apple TVs, 1 Strato-C/M300 player in a Co-Star configuration, 2 Roku Ultras, 2 PCs, and 1 XBOX One X)
  4. 18 Zones of audio (Sonnex)
  5. Autonomic Controls MMS-5A for 5 streaming audio / iTunes sources
  6. Cen-Track for 2 AM/FM Tuners / 2 Sirius XM
  7. Crestron DM-NVX for all video distribution outside of the theater (Video over IP)
  8. 2 Denon AVR-2600H for 5.1 in two rooms wired for 5.1
  9. 11 HVAC Zones using Crestron TStats
  10. ~ 100 Lighting Loads Crestron wired lighting control CLX1-DIM4, CLX-1DIM8, CLX1-DIMU4, and CLX-2DIMU8 lighting modules
  11. ~ 10 Fan Loads (Crestron wired control CLX-1Fan4)
  12. ~ 50 Keypads CNX-B?? series from Crestron
  13. ~ 50 Lutron Shades (Radio RA2)

I am right now getting all of the devices rack mounted and cabled for the sources. I have had the Crestron Thermostats for about 9 years, and I now finally getting them hooked up to a control system. Lighting is moving from something I had programmed in D3 Pro, to Crestron Home. I am going to move the lighting over Memorial Day weekend.

I am thoroughly documenting and labeling everything as part of this effort.

I need to find a source for Josh.AI as from what I saw at Cedia, it kicks Alexa in the butt for home automation and it appears to be supported by Home OS3.

I will post here as I make progress

Right now I have all the thermostats connected, and one room setup with a Sony TV, a DM-NVX-351C setup as an encoder with an Apple TV as a source, and a DM-NVX-351 as the Decoder connected to the Sony TV.

So far I have been very impressed with Crestron Home OS3.

Update on my Home OS3 implementation

  • I have added a directv 4k Genie using IR. Crestron just released IP drivers for the 4K Genie so I will need to update to that driver this weekend.
  • I have also set up a Strato-C, and an M300 player paired using a Co-Star switch.
  • I have two rooms setup to use the DirecTV, Apple TV, and the Kaleidescape. I will be adding an additional Apple TV, and 2 more DirecTV receivers to choose from.
  • I haven't decided if I am going to add a Roku Ultra device
  • After a few challenges (my understanding) I got my Sonnex Swamp 24x8, Swampe-8, and Swampe-4 setup for my whole house house audio (20 Zones available and I am using 17 Zones), and 7 sources (AM/FM Tuner, XM Tuner, Autonomic MMS-5A for five channels of streaming setup) I still need to finish setting up streaming sources on the Autonomic MMS-5A. Once I got past my understanding of setting up the Sonnex system, I was able to configure all 17 zones in under 30 minutes.
  • This weekend I plan to switch my lighting control from a D3-PRO based solution to Home OS3. That is going to be a VERY VERY big effort. I expect it will take two to 3 days to move and program everything, and any scenes will get create after that.
  • The latest release (yesterday) of Home OS3 added support controlling Lutron Shading via the Radio RA2. Unfortunately my Radio RA2 died, I have bought a replacement unit, but I am hoping my integrator that installed them will take care of replacing.
  • I will next need to start adding rooms that have Sonos Soundbars connected, and rooms that have built in 5.1 speakers. I have to figure out how to have two Crestron NVX decoders in the room (one for the TV, and one for the receiver (I purchased factory refurbished Denon AVR-X2600H receivers for the two rooms with a built in 5.1 speaker setup)
  • I hope to have time to try to get one room setup with Alexa connected to the Home OS3 system. My first attempt a week and a half ago was a miserable failure (I presume it was due to my lack of understanding)

I remain very impressed. My biggest issue has been a number of thermostats went off line. I powered them off and back on and it seems like it fixed all but one. I may have a flaky thermostat that I have to replace.

Hey Bryan

Do you have an installer or are you programming the entire system yourself?!

Looks like quite an undertaking!

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

Hello,

That is a substantial set up. I am about to add Crestron lighting and switch from Vantage. In doing so I am adding a CPR4 and hopefully depending on my integrator control my lighting with the existing CP3. My integrator is still against switching over to the OS 3. From what I can see it is more customizable from an end user but he is dead set against it currently. I also want to add Josh.ai to have more control . I was hoping to get your thoughts on OS3 .
Thanks
