Focal Elegia Closed-Back Reference Headphones Review

Focal is a speaker maker that is also heavily invested in headphones. The French company's Elegia closed-back reference headphones deliver luxurious fit, finish, plus awesome sound for under $1000.

Mark, how do these comapre to some of the other cans you've reviewed/heard/tested? It would be nice to add a section comparing others so people can get a point of reference.

Also, are you going to review Focal's flagship closed back, The Stellia?

Headphones are speakers for your head, I don't think the price for these is out of line. Nice review Mark !

Yeah I consider $1000 for headphones the maximum, don't care who makes it. As for the comment that HPs are speakers for the ear, well the problem is that a major component the room will be missing from the equiasion, and therefore they are really not the same thing. No headphone will come close to the imaging and sounstaging of just a decent pair of bookshelf speakers and an average room. And I actually spend way more time listening to HPs[full size cans not buds or IEMs] than speakers so this isn't some "speakers or die" rambling from a guy who never bother to use them. I enjoy them every day. Thanks for the review Mark!

Removing the room, is one reason headphones detail greater detail, rarely does a room enhance sound it usually degrades it. However the flip side, is good headphones can be too revealing of some components.

Thank you for the review, I picked up a set and they will now be headphone of choice for all my travel!

Do these need a break in period?

I also have a set of the Utopia for home listening and could not find any threads for them...

These don't come with 4-pin XLR cabling?

I see some owners calling it "bass light" with a wide soundstage. That kind of description generally means I would love it as I can't stand even slightly accentuated lows or confined imaging.

They do not come with an XLR cable, would have been a nice bonus.

You should definitely give them a listen if you are able as they meet both your criteria.
