looking to possibly try music first headphones , budget would be around $200 (flexible , but not more than double ).. i listen to blues (acoustic guitar oriented, as well as electric guitar), classic rock and vocal oriented music...would like something that has a bit of low end punch as well, but neutral speakers (like ascend) are my preference.. thanks...

Not sure if you've already picked up some headphones but if not check out the KLH Ultimate One. They're on sale at music direct. Looking at the reviews the sound might be what you'd like. A mildly boosted low end but otherwise fairly neutral. Most headphones have a boosted bass and treble. Some unbearably so, for me anyways. The only truly neutral headphones I'm aware of are the AKG K240 Studio's. But they wouldn't have enough bass for you.

Yeah I sold my house and am in an apartment now. Miss the space in the house for sure. I won't allow myself to use a sub so it's just bookshelf speakers/soundbar/headphones. If you get headphones also consider the ones I have now - Hifiman HE400i. They are open back and planar magnetic so they have a very open sound and a semblance of a soundstage and imaging. You can get them for under $200 now. $500 originally.

The cool thing about headphones is a good pair of headphones has the detail, clarity, accuracy of speakers that cost far far more. WAY more expensive. But of course it's mostly in your head and you lose the acoustics of the room. It's a trade-off.

I'm thinking I'll be ok with a sub.. It's a 1 floor apt with only one short common wall and good insulation according to the mgr... But i think i better have a plan b for jammin tunes ... The hd 599 were on my short list and tori suggested the hd 600 so I'll give that a look too ,thanks again

I have the 599s. Sound great and very comfortable. I also have the Audio Technica ATH-M50X. Sometimes I like them more because they are a very slight bit more neutral. However, the 599s have a wider sound stage and, I think, a little better instrument separation. They have slightly more bass and a slightly fuller sound but, again, it's not quite as neutral as my other set. Regardless, you will not be disappointed.
