I also installed infuse. Which did work well. But for any content with DD, it required to have the paid version to be able to play it back.

Yes you have to buy it. Or subscribe to it which I think is $6.50/year. But it's worth it. I use it to watch my uhd rips with hdr.

Plex isn't supported well on the atv. I use it for tv shows mostly. But anything with hd audio or hdr I use infuse.

Infuse is the reason to buy an ATV. We use it for all of our owned media. Plex has been relegated to remote access only status. The Infuse app is just fantastic, and the developers are very responsive to issues and bugs. So much so they even bought a Sony 900E in order to investigate a recent round of HDR issues. Since fixed BTW. I did some comparisons of the HDR image the Infuse delivers and the HDR image my Sony X800 BR player delivers. No noticeable difference.

FWIW, it's really good software that is backed by a super responsive team. 10 dollars a year is a steal.

You'll be hard pressed to find software on the Apple TV that will do full-featured 4k playback for free.

Just to add a little something, if you are a Plex user, Infuse is looking to add some Plex interfacing (with plex server I believe) as well. I don’t personally see a need, but it would be there for those that do. Infuse gives you the video wall and plays everything I have thrown at it.

What advantages Infuse has over Plex? I've been using Plex for ages, and it's been working well with no issues on my ATV4K (except the last beta update playback bug). I think I installed Infuse to see what all the fuss is about, but didn't really see any reason to abandon Plex. What am I missing?

A lot of the hour-long dramas and movies I watch has dimly lit scenes, so it rears its head a lot. It's not a big deal if watching in a lit room but when watching in the dark, as I tend to do, it's definitely noticeable from the couch.

Well, the good news is that apparently this flaw doesn't affect all ATV4Ks. So I just need to return mine for another.
Hey NashGuy,

I'm having the same exact experience as you had. Did you return your Apple TV and if so did the replacement fix the issue?

Thanks

One of the major issues for me at least - a couple of months ago, Plex would take a long time to start playback of a 4k local stream, and then buffer like crazy - the result was impractical to watch. Infuse has always streamed anything I can throw at it without issue. There may be others, but this for me was enough to make the switch and pay for the Infuse Pro edition. I've not used Plex on the ATV since

Audio from Apple Trailer app?

Only getting Dolby Surround when watching trailers from the Apple trailer app. Running the ATV4K through a denon 4300 which can simulate Atmos or DTS-X and it won’t even do that. Can do it when watching other apps such as Amazon, Netflix, etc.

Is there some sort of limitation with the Trailers app that only outputs a 2-Channel signal? Or is it based on the particular trailer being viewed?(was watching the trailer for Annihilation FWIW.)

The ATV4k audio is set to “best available”.

Yes. The AppleTV will test what the cable is capable of so even if it isn't up to snuff for 4K HDR you'll get the best the cable can deliver while you wait and I suspect an Xbox One X cable is 18Gbps anyway so should be fully capable.

No transcoding alone is worth it. Although I do like the Plex UI on ATV, I still prefer the Infuse UI. Infuse also has better subtitle support, similar to Kodi. But unlike Kodi, Opensubs is there by default....search and download subs on the fly.

Hi Guys - sorry for the late reply, (Infuse choking on Transformer UHD rips) I'd been testing all sorts to try and remedy the issue. Turns out it was neither a network or Infuse issue, but an nfs server problem. An update - which I hadn't been notified of....., or had simply missed, seems to have resolved the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions and help - much appreciated, even though it was a totally unrelated issue.

Just to clarify. When I watch YouTube on LG TV’s it is fine and there are some Ads. But on my 2 x Apple TV’s it is unwatchable now.

YouTube Red not available in the UK.

I'm just not seeing that. On my atv, phone or lg tv. Ads seem the same across all of them.

Aren't ads on videos decided by the content creators? Some videos I often watch have no ads at all.

MrMC will handle most of your file over network needs. It's KODI w/o the ability of piracy add-ons. I use it for MKV's as well & it works well. Worth the price imo.

Yeah, I think ads are determined by the owner of the video, not the platform the app is on.

A quick search shows that this is not a new complaint. Remember that Google can change whatever they want whenever they want and it's obvious they aren't going to make the ATV experience better.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

As I've mentioned in a couple of more pertinent threads the current public beta fixes my two test instances of DV elevated black. There are many more reported instances so this may not be a real fix. This is interesting to me because:
  1. According to John Archer the fix is a display update.
  2. LG release notes for the new EU only update mention DV.
  3. My recently updated Chromecast Ultra is also doing the right thing.

I’m a little confused, do you have an LG and are you running the latest EU firmware or are you saying the fix you are seeing is in the ATV Beta. If the later then I am having doubts about John Archers sources.

I did exchange my ATV4K for another one but, unfortunately, I still see the issue. It's very odd. The flickering near-blacks pop up just now and then, not in every dimly lit scene. (And not necessarily even in the same scenes from different sources -- I saw it a ton in The Hateful Eight in Netflix but not in the same scenes of that movie in Showtime Anytime!) I'm hoping some future software/firmware update for either the ATV4K or my LG B6 TV fixes the problem.

Sorry to hear you're seeing it too.

It’s rated for 18Gbps, it should work fine.

For those of you with 5.1 and above setups, do you use the Best Quality Available sound option instead of DD 5.1? Just curious if the ATV 4K is actually choosing correctly and if you could tell a difference between the two.

YouTube 4K?

Is there an issue with 4K on YouTube via ATV? I have no trouble getting 4K with other ATV apps and I have no issues with YouTube 4K on my OLED’s native YouTube app. I also have no issues with 4K on YT with other peripheral devices either. The issue is only ATV.
