Asking on here because it seems the ATV4K is a bit wonky depending on the TV. I quoted a user who has both the ATV4K and the Sony model I’m interested in.

What AVR do you have? Several AVRs. Mostly in 2015-2017 shipped by default in a mode that stripped all video modes >10Mb/s to ensure some signal was received with existing cables that might not cope with higher bitrates. There are advanced setup options that will allow all HDMI 2.0 bitrates and remove the problem you are seeing.

I own an LG 65B7, and find the native apps excellent to use and pq. I mainly use Netflix, Plex (local streaming from my NAS) and Amazon Prime, all in 4K HDR & Dolby Vision.

What would the ATV4K provide beyond what the LG already gives me?

Presumably nothing but untrammeled regret, however you should do some research and if you still wonder you can ask a more specific question.

The first thing that comes to my mind is you would be able to play your local media using plex, Infuse or MRMC and get HD Audio via LPCM to your receiver.

I think there is a bug in the board software because this is the third or forth time in the past month where I know I've responded only to find my response missing a little later. I'm pretty sure it's not because of anything controversial in the response Perhaps when two people simultaneously reply???? I've noticed the thing is sluggish lately as well.

Anway, I'd look at multiple devices. I find the "built in apps" to get less support and are dropped from updates as new models roll out.
I too use PLEX and the PLEX clients on my TVs and game consoles are woefully lacking. Like audio equipment, I prefer independent devices to multi-purpose solutions (old days it was "console stereos")!!!!

I have an ATV4K and multiple ROKUs. I like the ROKUs and their cost. In the past two weeks the Ultras were on sale for $50. Don't know if they still are. I like the ROKU remote with Power and volume. With CEC enabled it is a "one remote solution" for typical daily use. Can't say that for the ATV.

Since you do use PLEX you may know their development process is lacking. The ATV client has more features than the ROKU if you use LiverTV/DVR functions as I do.

Try out some streaming boxes. I think you'll like the separate device better but that's just me!

Unfortunately, there is a bug with the current version of tvOS where the family sharing section doesn't show up in the movies app on other family members Apple TV's when signed in as themselves, unless they also happen to own at least 1 movie in their own personal account. Once a family member owns at least one movie in their own account, then the family sharing section shows up correctly in the Movies app on the Apple TV, so they can access all the movies in the family library for streaming. This bug does not exist in the TV Shows app, so they can see the family sharing section there without owning any TV Shows themselves.

I wonder if this is also the case for iTunes apps on iPhones, as my children do not see the download icon for apps I have purchased in the main account; they only see the price. However, when they select "Get", then it states something to the effect of: "A family member has already purchased this; select OK to download again for free."

It has been this way ever since we have been using family sharing (a couple of years), and through many iOS updates.

ATV has a very good selection of DV/D Atmos movies you can buy or rent. Some at a reasonable prices. I found the quality of the streaming to be one of the best.

I have an Apple TV 4K which works great. I mainly use it to play movies & TV programs from my NAS box using Infuse In 4K and HDR. I can watch 4K Dolby Vision movies from Apple and have watched 4K TV on Netflix.

My problem is that when I go into Amazon Prime I can see a section for 4K Tv programs but no sign of 4K Movies anywhere. I have looked up and down the sections but no sign of 4K movies. Is there something I need to do or is there a special area to look in I haven't seen.

Amazon has a terrible limited selection of 4K content. You pretty much have to search the title with UHD in the name or keep scrolling till you see 4K UHD section for movies and TV

On Home Tab:

Four rows down “Included with Prime: Original Series in 4K Ultra HD”

Seven rows down “Included with Prime: 4K Ultra HD TV”

Scroll to right to “Movies” tab

Scroll down 21 rows to “Included with Prime: 4K Ultra HD Movies”.

I have an LG 55B6 and, after a little over a year, switched to the ATV4K vs. the TV's own apps. I'd say the main improvements that the ATV4K provides versus LG's app platform (webOS) are:

  • a larger selection of apps which are more reliably updated by the app developers
  • access to Apple video services (iTunes purchases/rentals, plus Apple's line-up of original series and films that will debut in 2019, rumored to be free and exclusive to Apple devices)
  • more consistent and better designed UIs and playback controls across apps
  • integration with other Apple devices and services (AirPlay, Apple Music, iTunes, HomeKit, etc.)
  • better screensavers (4K HDR aerials vs. animated fireworks)

Based on your personal use case and preferences, you may find that none of those benefits really apply or appeal to you, though. All of them are reasons that I prefer to use my ATV4K.

I hadn't tried the Prime app on the ATV4K for quite some time as it's been crippled with regards to audio playback format but I loaded up The Man in the High Castle last night and noticed that it had 5.1 audio. I didn't check any other content as it was very late, but has the lack of multi-channel audio been fixed with the Prime app or is it still hit or miss?

Thanks

See the first post in this thread. The Amazon thumbnail shows how it looked in the recent past. Sometimes the icon changes and it moves more often than is helpful. I haven't looked in the last week but I assume it's still there.

It's an app issue only because that's how Amazon's "content per platform" decisions are exposed. Recently (look back in the thread a ways) the number of features that are labeled 5.1 that play in 5.1 has increased. But as noted it is still inconsistent.

Still depends, but I just got turned onto Patriot, and was surprised to find both seasons in 5.1 as well last week.

Hi,

I don't watch much Television ... but when I do I have a Logitech Smart Remote that functions exactly like my Siri remote except it lacks Siri and it has a MUTE button ! I love to mute commercials. I don't remember what I was watching recently but the commercials seemed about twice as loud as the show I was watching.

To my surprise I invited people over to watch a football game and they were upset if I muted the commercials. Some people like them.

Strange, every show I play on Amazon starts with an obnoxiously loud Thursday Prime Football ad. Probably about 15 seconds long.

Well I spent about 20 mins searching the manual for your TV and it doesn't seem to have an "old cable compatibility mode", like some. As it's pretty recent I guess that is not that surprising, although some, Like Yamaha, have chosen just to invert the default setting, so now it defaults to "full UHD", with an option to reduce to <10Mb/s if necessary.

Your AVR certainly claims to support UHD/HDMI 2.0b fully, Given when it was released and it's price point I'd sure expect it to (my Yamaha bought in Sept '16 and close to half the price does). I think you need to address some questions at Onkyo. I'd expect pretty exceptional support at that price too!

To my surprise I invited people over to watch a football game and they were upset if I muted the commercials. Some people like them.
I have a friend that talks throughout the movies and shuts up during commercials. True story!

Fellow ATV4K users,

Do you download iTunes movies?

I know it's not possible to download the iTunes 4K versions but I'm curious if anyone else relies entirely on streaming for all iTunes content. I'm tempted to have a go a DL-ing all my iTunes or a few so I know how much hard drive would be needed if I did Dl them all.
