There were some references made in late 2017 about Apple limiting/compressing ATV4K DolbyVision content (perhaps HDR in general) to 1000 nits. Any truth to this and if so, what’s the thinking?

FWIW I have a SonyA9F hooked up to an ATV 4K and it’s spectacular. iTunes 4K and even1080P movies are amazing- the Apple TV brings another element to the viewing experience, it’s terrific. It’s by far the best streaming device, though still a bit buggy. Dolby vision especially is terrific, and it has an audio dynamic range enhancer which I don’t see people discussing, but is well worth the price by itself.

It seems unlikely. How was this "discovered"?

It’s true.i switched back to iTunes as my main go to from Prime since iTunes has a relatively huge selection of 4K and especially Dolby Vision.

I have a Sony OLED. I can’t speak for LG but the Apple TV is a HUGE UPGRADE for me. User interface is a game changer, huge iTunes selection of 4K movies, Dolby vision, screen saver is worth a lot, audio night and day better, and I LOVE the remote, though many seem to hate it. Siri actually works on this thing ( not on my iPhone). I feel the quality of the pic is WAY better than the native apps. Why not try one and return it if it’s not for you?

I get top quality DD 5.1 on almost every prime, Netflix, and iTunes show through the ATV. I expect to be adding DD+ today. Don’t know about Atmos. So yes, all multichannel through the prime pp and everything else, even Showtime.

Your AVR certainly claims to support UHD/HDMI 2.0b fully, Given when it was released and it's price point I'd sure expect it to (my Yamaha bought in Sept '16 and close to half the price does). I think you need to address some questions at Onkyo. I'd expect pretty exceptional support at that price too!
Thank you very much for spending time on this!

It seems that 4:4:4 12 bit (or 10 bit) works fine. It is only 4:2:2 12 bit that seems to be downconverted to 8 bit. I am not sure if this is something my AVR is doing or if this has something to do with the EDID coming from my projector. Maybe it is not indicating it can accept 4:2:2 12 bit for some reason?

My MacBook seems to only offer HD download.

My phone says Dolby Vision so I'm trying to DL to my phone then back up into my iTunes to see if the HDR survives.

I download every single movie and tv show I buy as a backup in case something goes missing. It’s good practice and worth investing in additional USB storage.

The 1080p HD file sizes range from 3 to 9 gigs depending on length.

That was a discussion about converting DV to HDR10 and the changes in the process as tvOS has changed.

DV is an opaque container and imagine you'd probably need to:
  • find a way to capture the stream
  • remove the drm
  • feed it into a DV Q/C system
for the content in question if you wanted to make a metadata comparison with other sources.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

Back in the early iTunes DV days, My iPhone X and iPad 10.5 could download huge movie files. With my new iPad I can’t get anything over 10 GB for the same movies that are still on my iPhone X-

Used the traffic meter on my router to test the size of a DV movie played on an Apple TV. It appeared to be about 30 GB.

  • a larger selection of apps which are more reliably updated by the app developers
  • access to Apple video services (iTunes purchases/rentals, plus Apple's line-up of original series and films that will debut in 2019, rumored to be free and exclusive to Apple devices)
  • more consistent and better designed UIs and playback controls across apps
  • integration with other Apple devices and services (AirPlay, Apple Music, iTunes, HomeKit, etc.)
  • better screensavers (4K HDR aerials vs. animated fireworks)

Based on your personal use case and preferences, you may find that none of those benefits really apply or appeal to you, though. All of them are reasons that I prefer to use my ATV4K.
That's a good list. And how one ranks those features will vary. Frankly, if I wasn't a big user of iTunes movies, I'd have not reason to use the ATV4k on my LG OLED other than the nicer interface, now that FilmStruck has shut down -- though the UI is way nicer on the ATV.

But that's probably a temporary thing, for me, since before long there will be an AMC or USA or FX show I want to watch on their app, and I don't think the LG has those apps.

Each person's viewing will make the equation different, so this list is useful for starting that analysis.

On occasion when our internet is flakey or when the iTunes streaming servers are flakey, I will download to watch things locally. And, of course, downloading to a portable device for travel is a very nice thing.

I really need to download my movie library just to be redundant/backed up. It should cost me c. $0.50 of hard drive space per movie if my math is correct.

Please let us know what you find. (Those earlier posts were not really about this topic.). You are reading the content and not just reading the metadata?

It would be strange if nothing exceeds that number. I assume you are seeing many things fall below that number, already?

I don't have the Oscar Nominated Icon either.

I wonder if it's because you are in the USA and I am in the UK !!!!! Interesting

Yes, looking for and measuring specular DolbyVision content. I’ve got a list of scenes to look at but have only had time for a few at this point. I’ll make a spreadsheet when I’ve got good data. The original intent was to measure differences on the Sony with XDR at different settings but now I’m curious to find in content examples at peak.

Used the traffic meter on my router to test the size of a DV movie played on an Apple TV. It appeared to be about 30 GB.
Back when this was an active topic I usedt bit-rate * time to arrive at a stream size estimate because the mobile downloads seemed a bit small. The size of downloads seems to be a bit of a moving target for Apple. I'm fairly confident that years ago HD downloads were larger than they are now. Perhaps someone noticed leakage from mobile devices and decided to do something about it.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

Does anyone know how to get my Apple 4K TV to be seen by my mac? My fire tv and Oppo 103 are seen on the network but not my Apple TV. Connected via ethernet.
