You could use the drives in their enclosures but I personally run them in a NAS enclosures so I can run RAID 5. After formatting to RAID 5, it brings the storage down to ~27TB but it is worth it for me since I have spent countless hours backing up my movies and I know should one of the drives fail, I pop it out and put in a new one with no data loss.

Using the Qnap with Plex running on it, it worked great with the Apple TV and Shield, I just personally moved away from Plex. Both the Apple TV and Shield can play basically any format so no transcoding is necessary. This is ideal because you don't encounter any quality loss and the low end Celeron quad core processors in NAS aren't strong enough to do high quality transcodes.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a list of other Apps that provide 4k content on the Apple TV besides Itunes Prime and Netflix?

Both CuriosityStream and Smithsonian Channel offer 4K content too and I assume their apps for ATV4K support it.

In addition to what others have stated MA (Movies Anywhere) also plays 4K content.

Is that the app. which plays back digital copies with Blu Ray discs?

Do UHD HDR Blu Ray discs provide UHD HDR digital copies that you can play back on Apple TV 4K?

Yes, that’s the name of the app. So if you redeemed a digital code from a UHD BR-D from any of the seven participating retailers you can watch it on the ATV4K with this app. It will Play 4K SDR and 4K HDR but not Dolby Vision.

Movies Anywhere is HDR10 only currently but if MA is tied to iTunes and/or Vudu and they have the Dolby Vision version there, it will play back in that format.

Nor does the YouTube app on the Apple TV 4k due to the fact the device doesn’t support the VP9 codec (or VP9.2 for HDR) discussed in multiple posts on this thread. As a result most of us are using our TV’s built in app or some other device like the Ruku or Chromecast Ultra to view YouTube 4K content.

You can see for yourself by pulling up the Stats for Nerds overlay where the Current / Optimal Resolution never exceeds 1920 x 1080 when using the ATV4K as shown in the thumbnail below.

Thanks I forgot about the V9 chip vs software codecs issues, since I don't use YouTube personally.

There’s a “V9 chip” requirement?

So, i'm sort of cross-posting because i'm not sure what is causing the issue i'm seeing.

my setup: Apple TV 4k which has its video /audio split with HD Fury's AVRkey. video sent to Sony 900e TV (verified HDR is passing through fine) and the audio being sent to an Emotiva UMC-200 feeding a 7.1 system.

here's the problem:

when i play a movie that appears to have 7.1 information (for e.g., Star is Born), the Emotiva displays that is receiving LPCM 7.1 information (L R C Ls Rs Lrs Rrs), but i don't get any sound coming out of the rear speakers (Lrs and Rrs). if the movie is detected as 5.1 (e.g., Blade Runner), the Emotiva shows 5.1 information and sends sound to both the rear and side surround speakers.

can anyone help me troubleshoot was is going on? i have a post onto the HD Fury site, yet i think i have the AVRkey set up properly.

There is not, considering my iPhone Xs Max can playback VP9.2 video via software decoding.

Why would Apple do that? Only Google uses it that codec and Google chose to provide software decoding for some Apple devices while ignoring others. It’s up to the developer to provide support for their products if the hardware is capable.

This thread is really something else. I joined in on the conversation about which apps support 4K by correcting the fact that the YouTube app on the on the ATV4K device does NOT support 4K.... and then lthe conversation gets derailed into yet another discussion on unrelated devices and who is at fault — Apple or Google (YouTube).

Bottom Line: As it stands currently while staying on-topic to this thread, if you want YouTube 4K or YouTube 4K HDR you are going to need to use a device that supports the VP9 / VP9.2 codecs which the Apple TV 4k does not

Hulu + Live tv w/apple tv 4k

I'm testing out Hulu Live tv and was wondering if anyone here using an Apple tv 4k has tried or is currently using Hulu live tv?

When using my Roku, I can see an "Edit Pencil" to the right of each profile that's established. This lets you edit or delete a profile. Unfortunately, using the apple tv 4k, there is no edit pencil to edit the profile. Anyone have any experience with this.

Thanks. Mike

If you (or anyone else) has an issue with the ATV4K not supporting 4K YouTube then bitch to Google or for those who want to blame Apple then bitch to them. I am sure they’d love to hear from you!

As for me although I was disappointed that the ATV4K ended up not supporting YouTube 4K as mentioned in many reviews dating back to 2017 and discussed in multiple posts on forums like this, I accepted the fact I would have to use one of at least 5 devices in my home that are capable.

I don't believe anyone is tracking that. Other than the major players (Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney et.al.) there doesn't appear to be much interest in 4K (which is sensible) or HDR (which is sad).
HBO is rumored to be releasing 4K assets possibly coinciding with the roll-out of the WarnerMedia streaming service. I'd also expect 4K from CBS (ShowTime) and NBCU at some point.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I would check two different things to verify if you are in fact missing some audio from the rear surrounds. First, I would test by not using the AVRkey and plugging the ATV direct into your Emotiva and check the audio. You won’t get the 4K video during the test but you should be able to tell if the AVRkey is cutting off your rear surrounds for some reason. Second, I would test with material you know has active rear surround information. Do you have any action movies you know to have sound in the rears you could test? If you hear sound when not using the AVRkey and then don’t hear it when you do then you know the AVRkey is the problem. The rear surrounds typically receive the least amount of sound in a 7.1 mix so it’s possible there just isn’t much if any in the mix even if all the channels are working fine. Do some testing and if the AVRkey is the problem you will need to push HDFury to resolve it.

Since the ATV4K released in late 2017 ended up not supporting YouTube 4K (and has been written about a ton on review sites and forums like this) since I lost hope sometime ago and have been usng my Google Chromecast on one TV and my 4K HTPC and the Edge browser on the other.

You can’t argue with that. Oh wait, I forgot who I was replying to!
I don't care about YouTube on the Apple TV at all anymore and also no argument here, I was only correcting your mistake, no need to get upset!

So for those upset about lack of software support, complaints should go towards Google, then the lack of hardware support, send those puppies over to Apple.

I use Plex. I have a portable USB drive full of media connected to an HP laptop.

I haven't delved into whether Plex is aggressively transcoding the streams but they look nice and crisp and I get Dolby Digital Plus and DTS sound for those rips which have better than AC3. Plex's main value is that it auto populates the library and downloads the metadata and poster art. It sometimes doesn't match files to the correct content but you can fix those manually.

I would love to convert my 500 or so blu rays to streaming 1080 files with DD+ somehow. Doe plex do that and could someone point me to a newbie link to get started? Thank you!

Plex is only a server and a front end for hosting media and adding metadata.

MakeMKV is what many use and I use to do full 1:1 backups and then if people want to do another round of compression of the media, they use Handbrake. Most Blu-rays have lossless audio tracks which Plex/Infuse/MrMC will decode on the Apple TV but you are wanting to specifically get lossy DD+ audio?
