If this upcoming model doesn't sell well, we may not see another new model for several years.

ATV 5 may offer other benefits beyond a better processor that will entice existing owners to upgrade. I guess we'll find out on the 12th.

Even though the hardware supports it, and you use the same OS version, it's a missing feature on older macs.
But that's not an Apple-specific issue, that's true across the board when it comes to hardware. Regarding AirDrop, I'm fairly certain older Macs lack the newer versions of Bluetooth. I believe it works with MBP's that are close to ten years old – I have one from 2011 and it works fine. Try that with any other hardware manufacturer.

I have a 2011 imac. That's the cutoff year for air drop. It doesn't work per apple. Must be 2012 or newer.

Yes, there are different dates per Mac to Mac versus Mac to iOS device. Mac to Mac goes back to 2008 for certain models.

They're selling at least one. I'm using an ATV3 and Roku Express right now, with a 4K capable projector, so I have zero 4K streaming options. With the addition of HDR and Prime Video, I'm a day 1 purchaser.

That is assuming that Amazon ever finishes their Prime app for ATV. Rumor has it it won't be ready in time for launch - which would be a shame.

Amazon Video is just the sort of thing Apple would like to introduce along with the ATV 4K (i.e. ATV6,2). At least if it supports 4K.
Likewise if the new remote has some clever app related features they'll have some app to announce that uses those features.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I know Tim Cook at the last keynote said that Amazon Prime "was coming" but of course no firm date. Data-mined information says we may have an updated Siri remove with haptic feedback as well - so we'll know more in about 24 hours!

Well after 4k what is there, that's the end of better picture quality for awhile. Most other improvements would be software updates, and that will be true for most streaming boxes.

Nice to see that during the keynote today they demonstrated the 4k HDR Apple TV using a Dolby Cinema projection setup -- which is a 100 nit display tech, showing that content can be mapped to that front projection standard (in addition to the usual 1000 to 4000 nit type of display one sees in flat panels).

They seem to be doing this right.

They are upgrading all purchased content to 4k, where it exists, free of charge.

And the fact that their UHD content costs the same as HD content -- which is considerably more competitive that competing services like Vudu is quite compelling.

They mentioned HDR specifically but I did't hear any mention of WCG. Seems it would be there but we'll see.

(And note that they listed all the major studios as participating in this rollout EXCEPT Disney.)

(I suppose the sports and news stuff will appeal to many people, as well, but I don't use my setup for that stuff.)

4K at the same price

I'm personally quite pleased that Apple has (so far) arranged to sell HD and 4K at the same price. And (one would think obviously) existing HD purchases are upgraded to 4K.

And yes, Amazon Prime Video will arrive in 4K.

Kick ass, free upgrade to 4k for existing movies and same price as hd going forward. I'm curious to see if my movies redeemed via code will be upgraded or not. I suspect it will only be direct itunes purchases, but we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

Hopefully this also has the effect of driving down physical media prices. $30-40 for a movie is ridiculous.

Hopefully Apple won't raise the price of HD movies. Right now it would be a great deal being able to rent UHD movies for $5.99 and buy for $19.99 which is the current price for HD movies.

They support E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1) which can support ATMOS in the bitstream, just fine, and at a high bitrate is hard to tell the difference. VUDU does it this way on some devices today, as does Netflix.

But the specs so far make it look like Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio are not support (at least via bitstream) though the gear has the bandwidth to do lossless PCM or WAV surround sound -- though that would NOT contain ATMOS of course.

Technically we're starting to see 8K come around. I think we are years away from that going mainstream though.

This is good news - but not unexpected with the 4K need.

They did *upgrade* the remote a bit. And dropped the price, which is nice. But honestly I liked the previous-gen "silver" remote better myself.

This, this, a thousand times this. I am so incredibly happy that they are doing this. I have over 200 movies in my iTunes library and was looking at them in dread - I figure 10% are probably 4K-released but that could have been a lot of cash if I'd have had to rebuy them.

That blows.

There's a ton of content with DTS HD MA now.

........
No UHD streaming service comes anywhere close to saturating a 100Mb/s Ethernet port, let alone GigE. UHD streaming only averages around a 15Mb/s bitrate.

Movies redeemed via code will be upgraded. Apple said any HD movie that is in your library will be upgraded to 4K if it becomes available. Redeeming a code is essentially like purchasing the movie through iTunes.

Yes, this will be the path forward streaming boxes and related apps. I’ll continue to purchase discs for lossless audio, just not as many titles.

I'm not sure where you got that confirmation, but what I heard him say live on stage was all "all hd purchases made on itunes" or something similar. Googling shows similar qualifiers on reports. You very well might be right but right now I'm sticking with I have no idea if redemptions count. It could go either way.

Where did you see anything about price? I saw the portion of the Apple event dealing with the Apple TV 4k but didn't hear anything about price.
