Any news on the Amazon Prime Video app?

lack of grain

Does all streaming have less grain than blu ray/UHD, or does it matter whether it's Apple TV iTunes movies vs. Netflix?

I've been watching some movies on itunes that were shot on 35mm and hardly notice any grain, even on older films. I'll check out some movies shot on 16mm to make sure...

This is normal, right? Do streaming services reduce grain?

Any argument you see regarding bitstream vs. pcm is not from Apple.
The fact that people compain doesn't mean it's a bad decision on Apple's part.
Complain about poor re-encoding of audio or video.
Complain about the loss of high quality video for people with slow links or the fact that you can't learn the home button on the Siri remote.

If accepting PCM causes someone a problem they should take it up with the person who decided to buy the inadequate gear.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

Huh? You are not making sense. You do realize our desire for bitstream is not because of "audio gear inadequacy" ... Quite the opposite ... bitstream is the only way to transmit a ATMOS signal to the newer ATMOS compatible receivers.

Are you going through the receiver? If yes, which receiver are you using? If not, your TV re-encodes the audio and will modify the level before sending it to the receiver. For those of us with TVs that cannot process ATMOS, going through the receiver is the right way to connect the Apple TV (for when ATMOS gets added).

Would that be threatrical Atmos, Disc Atmos, streaming Atmos or tablet Atmos?
Oh wait, there is no Atmos to be had. When Apple decides to offer Atmos I'm sure they'll provide the needed hardware and or software.

I said "If accepting PCM causes someone a problem they should take it up with the person who decided to buy the inadequate gear." You seem to be assuming I meant specific source or sink. I didn't.

Buy what's in the box. Not what might be in some future box.

Some services use some smoothing when encoding their content. It allows them to use less bandwidth when storing and transmitting content.

Apple tends to do this less than most other services.

If you want to see some good film grain, rent the 4k version of Starship Troopers (the original). It's a very nice transfer of the original 35mm source and retains a good amount of grain, imo.

Among other things AirPlay 2 integrates with the Home app where, in addition to having your lights come on, heat controlled, or curtains open and close at certain times of the day you will now be able to included things like using an audio alert when certain things are happening - like an alarm - or merely part of your evening routine to have music played automatically without you having to worry about turning it on.

And that's not all. For more details...

Did you just sign-up for a general iTunes alert or were you able to specify parameters specific to movie deals?

I have a general iTunes alert. The slickdeals app works quite good in showing alerts and users are generally very considerate to list maximum information on the thread title. I simply ignore the app related offers and look for movie deals.

So if there is a 4K/HDR movie on iTunes for $20, but I can get the physical 1080P Blu-ray with a digital code for iTunes for $9... if I just buy the Blu-ray and use the digital code, will that movie play in 4K/HDR on iTunes?

Don’t bother with all that ... just download two apps from your Apple TV - Movie Of the Day ... and CheapCharts. CheapCharts is lot more expansive and I have found lot of deals that are not easily visible through other sources.

Eh, in my experience AirPlay is fairly hit-or-miss and doesn’t always work that well. The sole reason I first purchased an Apple TV (2nd gen) was to AirPlay music and eventually, photos and screen mirroring also. I have used Airplay on multiple routers (usually Apple), with multiple phones (iPhones 6, 6+, 7+). No matter how good the WiFi connection, even if both phone and ATV have a flawless connection to the network (ATV usually with Ethernet cable) there is always a long pause before Airplay engages. Sometimes it drops and requires multiple tries. With each new phone or device I hoped it would become quicker and more seamless, but with the new ATV 4K it seems worse - now sometimes the audio fails to engage despite the Airplay link being established. Bluetooth seems much more responsive, quick to connect, and consistent. I’m counting on Apple to prove me wrong, but I have little hope that Airplay 2 will do anything but complicate or slow things further.

To make sure, you may want to ask about the particular movie you have in mind. But in general, yes, if you have an iTunes code (not a studio or UV or Vudu or MA code) for HD on iTunes and they have that movie in 4k, you'll get that move in 4k on iTunes.

I'm giving up on my Apple TV 4 (not 4k version). The "Best Audio available" option sounds so weak, so I have to use the Dolby Digital 5.1 option which means no Dolby Digital Plus. Also, I tried the Netflix test video and on the apple TV it won't go past 4300 kbps. My Xbox One S sounds great in 5.1 uncompressed and it reaches 5800 kpbs on the Netflix test video with ease. Both are in the same location.

I'm glad to hear it Heffe, but unfortunately for me the 11.2 Beta didn't fix my audio. I think it only fixed the 4k version. They probably won't bother with the non-4k Apple Tv anymore.

Blu-ray.com has a nice deals section with some good sorting, including latest deals and iTunes / 3D / UHD sorting. Can also sort by Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy deals.

Pioneer ELITE PRO-720HD | Pioneer PDP-5010FD | Sony XBR-55X850B | LG OLED55E6P
OPPO BDP-103 | OPPO UDP-203

I have the 11.2 beta and I don’t believe its fixed (when using Best Audio option). There is a huge difference in audio levels between audio from (say) CNN App (stereo) and Netflix (DD 5.1). No difference in audio levels between say CNN App and CBS News App or even YouTube channels. The sound is low when my receiver (Denon X2300) detects MPCM signal coming from the Apple TV. Its very noticeable. Changing audio output from Best Available to DD 5.1 ... brings them all to about the same level.

Anyone using an HDFury Linker with the ATV4k?

I use it to strip the HDR flag before the signal gets to my JVC projector, because the projector can be manually set to HDR "more accurately" than automatic switching enables (i.e., most calibration controls are locked out when using auto switching to their default HDR gamma but one can create a special fully calibratable HDR gamma and manually select it).

For most playback sources, they don't worry about this and send the HDR content just fine. The Linker looks like an HDR capable device.

But the Apple TV may be having trouble with this setup.... though only on the most recent otherwise awesome Beta firmware.

Yeah but Guardians doesn't come with an iTunes code in the box, right? It comes with a Movies Anywhere code. Those never give you 4k on iTunes.

Has to be a code that is redeemed directly in iTunes.
