The ATV4K, like every other HDMI device, needs appropriate cables. It's not finicky.
I said certified 18G aren't necessary. E.g. Blue Jeans Series-FE cables are the same as they were prior to 18G certification. Or, in my specific circumstance, I have about a dozen 10 year old Monoprice 24" HS cables that all pass 18G.

I can only suggest you reread my posts about cables with an eye to detail.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

The obvious question is: Are your other devices set to 18G? I'm assuming you set your ATV to 18G rather than 9G.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I actually meant - though didn't articulate - the previews that just start playing in the main interface but that's a good thing to know as well. Thanks!

So, to my surprise I watched Valerian on Prime Video and got 5.1 audio. Yet their own "marquee" titles are still giving stereo. Clearly they haven't a clue what's going on.

You don't really "set" things to 18G but you can have resolution, refresh, and bit depth that use the extra bandwidth but to answer your question, yes, they all are doing 4K60 4:2:2 10 bit or higher, with the Oppo being 12 bit but at 23.976. The other devices are Xbox One Xs, PS4 Pros, PCs, and Shield.

I had my 3 Apple TVs be picky with cables on 3 different TVs.

I find it unlikely because I feel like if they did, they would insist the quality of service would be in parity with other streaming boxes, as far as having the same audio stream, etc.

The Apple TV 4K is the device across the board that is my main anchor. I'm not going to use another device simply because a few of the things it does it could do better. It is because all of the things it does.

Sharing photos with family across the country.
EPSN multicast especially now during NCAA M Basketball.
Music.
Ease of use.
Communication with iPAD's and iPHONES.

It'll be great when it gets 4K ironed out on iTUNES and when apps get up to speed. But those issues don't make it a ROKU.

They haven't mentioned it to the "press".
In any case Vudu has proferred a feeble excuse and, as noted above Amazon is streaming (at this moment) Valerian in AC-3. They'll probably notice and turn it off.

Just to comment how good the App TV looks set to 4K SDR. Checkout Gotham on Fox’s NOW app. Absolutely amazing!

Unlikely, considering how badly Apple wanted Amazon on the ATV in the first place. I believe the issue is more that Amazon (and possibly VUDU) developed their apps to run on as many platforms as possible so they just ported those generic apps over to the ATV rather than develop a custom app designed for ATV using the tvOS SDK.

Found a cheap code for Baywatch on iTunes and the movie is dumb yet funny but holy heck does it look amazing on their service on the latest tvOS update in Dolby Vision! Apple has a winner on their hands as far as image quality for a streamer box!

Right. Vudu took forever to update the app on my Samsung TV to support 4k. Even then and now, it doesn’t support HDR. I don’t think Vudu has the manpower or desire to develop/support so many different platforms.

Amazon's 4K FireTV is $45 for Prime members today. I really want the AppleTV to be the main device, but for that, I guess they got me, I'll use their device for their content if it presents best there.

Oh my, weren't there audio concerns with that device as well?

I hope these posts aren't triggering any off topic complaints. Kind of related regarding audio shortcomings...

Yes that is what I have found too. The ATV for whatever reason just seems more fussy over cables.

Last night I tried to play a couple of movies on the Apple TV 4k device but only got the spinning circle on both of them. I then checked for updates and found none and also restarted the box and still no movies would play. Anyone else run into this issue and how did you get it working? I did get Netflix to work but not the iTunes movies.

I watched a 4K DV movie last night from between 6-8 pm approx. I didn’t notice any problems. Los Angeles area.

"Amazon's 4K FireTV"

I'd not have one if they gave it to me. Maybe not even if they paid me. That of course would depend on the amount. I can be bought. But not for 45 a month!

???? It is a 45 USD one time purchase. The FireTV doesn't do DolbyVision but it does HDR10 and Atmos. To get Vudu, you have to sideload it.

Airplay on ATV 4K

I have 2 Apple TV 4K's both hooked up directly to sound bars via HDMI. When playing Apple Music (or any other app utilizing Airplay) it doesn't work on the Apple TV labeled living room. Everything works fine on the ATV labeled bedroom. It seems to go in a loop and I can select my living room to send the music but then it doesn't go and playback stops all together. I recorded a screen video on my iPhone about what is happening but I cannot seem to insert it correctly here. Very frustrating. Any advice is appreciated.
