Streaming HBO from Crave is brutal!! It would be nice to get at least one of better picture or better sound. I might as well have added HBO to my cable package for the duration of GOT considering the poor quality of streaming.

Apple TV owners' thread.

I watched the first episode of Game of Thrones season 8 with HBO now and Centurylink gigabit fiber, and was very happy with the picture. The only thing I noticed was the volume level seemed to be very low. I used HBO Go when season 7 was on and they seem to have really upped the picture quality to me.

I had a low volume issue on Comcast as well. Normally 68 on my volume is a solid volume for most cable content. Sunday's GOT episode needed 70-71 just to be decent.

Did Apple start downgrading movies from 4K to HD? Several of my 4K movies now say they are just HD.

I only know of one currently in my collection. The Hunger Games went from UHD to HD. It's been like that for several days and I'm just thinking they're modifying it somehow.

Again, “Apple” does not do this. The content providers do. This happens every so often as the providers update encodes, etc. eventually they come back. All of this is assuming you actually own/have the UHD rights of course.

No, it’s 15.5% plus if you but it with a Costco credit card and additional 2%. Pretty good deal. I was told Sams Club has a similar offer.

Crave on ATV is 1080p, not 720p:

from https://www.crave.ca/help-and-freque...JsIjoiZW4ifQ==

How much data does Crave use playing video?
On Crave.ca, users can control the quality of their video playback...

Approximate amount of data used per bitrate:

1080p - 2.6GB/hour (iOS, Android, Chromecast, Apple TV Generation 4, Apple TV Generation 3, Samsung TV and Amazon FireTV only)
720p – 2.5GB/hour
540p – 1.1GB/hour
360p – 800MB/hour
240p – 320MB/hour

No one here claimed HBO quality was great *everywhere* either. The discussion was about HBO Go/Now streaming, not cable/satellite. For me, the quality of HBO Go on the Apple TV 4k is certainly better than Comcast's HBO feed.
Watch the first season GoT on Bluray then compare the dark scenes and you will be amazed compared to streaming. The bright scenes streaming are fairly good it the compression on the dark scenes that you really notice a difference.

FWIW, I checked mine and #2-4 are 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos, whereas #1 is HD. It's probably being updated it to 4K DV and Atmos.

Which is the expected ~5Mb/s.

By the way the current best 4K is ~25Mbs so one would expect 2K to be ~6Mbs (ignoring the codec improvements). I have Spectrum and the quality was comparable in the whole. There were some glitchy bits in the Spectrum feed that didn't happen with HBOGO.

An aside: HBO needs more volume gain on cable and streaming.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I understand that Sony's have good video processing, but my point about upscaling still stands. Also I don't care what anyone says, there is no way Sony's processing is going to magically make a 5 mbps stream look like a UHD blu-ray (which go up to 100 mbps+). My '5 mbps' number was a guess, but apparently that's accurate according to HBO's website. That's a pathetically low number by today's standards.

I agree. It is not only the upscaling though. That particular Sony has about 250 local array dimming zones and an exceptional brightness. I have the same TV and it makes everything look good to exceptionally good. Anyhow this is not about the Sony, but the picture and sound quality of streaming services. I think it is ridiculous that most services don’t offer uhd, hdr and Atmos. I won’t subscribe to any of those. Apple said that with their “hosted” channels they will make the streams available in the best picture and sound quality possible. I hope that best possible quality isn’t restricted by the content owners. Maybe I will give one of the beta channels a try to check, but maybe them being in beta means quality isn’t maximized yet. All these dilemmas we have...

Which is why you should subscribe to HBO either via Amazon Channels or the upcoming Apple TV Channels. Amazon uses a pretty decent bitrate for their HD content. I expect Apple to as well; I specifically recall that during Apple's recent "It's Show Time" keynote, the slide unveiling the Apple TV Channels service listed picture quality as one of the reasons to use it to access the underlying sources.

A couple of nice things about Apple TV Channels vs. Amazon Channels: First, the sound should be in sync unlike with everything in the Prime Video app, where the sound is slightly off. Second, subscribing through Apple TV Channels won't first require an underlying subscription, whereas to use Amazon Channels you first have to maintain a Prime Video subscription (which I don't always keep). And, who knows, maybe subscribing to a certain amount of services through Apple TV Channels (e.g. a minimum of $9.99/mo) will score us free access to Apple TV+. I still don't know how they're going to get many folks to pay for that service as a standalone pay subscription, at least in its early days, so I expect to see it somehow bundled in for free or cheap with other Apple offerings...

In the beta version of the new Apple TV app, it simply opens up HBO shows in the HBO Now app. Is that supposed to change?

How much of this has to do with the ATV4K compared to a Comcast / FiOS set top box. I always led myself to believe that the processing in the ATV4K is far superior and therefore will lead to a better picture.

I had some HD & 4k DVDs with digital copy along in the box & transferred them to iTune cloud via my minimac so I can play them via my Apple TV but they all transferred in SD version they look horrible PQ wise . I wonder if there's a remedy for that.

Yeah... way back when Blu Rays came with SD digital copies sometimes.

Only solution is to re-purchase to get the newer version.

Speaking of that, I was wondering why my copies of Captain America The First Avenger and Thor dis-appeared. Turns out they were redeemed in 2012 or so and they are not the same copies that iTunes hosts now. I got them to re-appear but I may rebuy them anyway because in the case of Cap I can buy UHD (in Vudu .... will only be HD in iTunes) and Thor may have a better transfer now and it's on sale. (May wait to see if Thor goes UHD which may be the reason it's currently on sale.)

So I asked Apple why my copies of Captain America and Thor dis-appeared and got a canned response and a few rental credits.

I've heard this before but I think it bears repeating, Here's an exerpt.

"Please be advised that iTunes Store is only a store front. Distributors add their content to our store and it is their choice to remove or modify them as they are the producers, distributors, and content owners of the items we have in the store. I regret to inform you that, although iTunes have the power to approve contents to be offered for sale in the store, the developers, content providers and distributors are the one responsible for managing or updating their contents. They can modify or remove items if they wish to, and iTunes doesn't have the ability to control their decisions. I hope you understand."

This leaves the ATV4K in a kind of strange area.... It seems like purchases from iTunes should be DL-ed right away but the 4K versions can't be DL-ed at all.

I guess I've known this for a while... I don't know what to think of it really. I realize that movies get remastered or re-released but I expect things I buy to remain available and that's not what iTunes offers.

I love to buy movies in iTunes for my ATV4K but .... I think I'm really realizing that dines't make any sense. I think I should buy on Vudu instead. I've never heard of this happening there. I don't know if I'm over-reacting (this doesn't happen often) or under-reacting (They have a ready made excuse for not having to honor purchased content dis-appearing.)

I guess I have to ponder this for a while. I did rebuy Thor and Captain America ... but I still don't know what I should really be doing for the future.
