You go to the calibration page and select wireless audio sync. A pop-up appears on your iOS device and you tap through three screens with your mobile device close to your TV*. Tones are generated via HDMI. There is no video and it doesn't use the camera in the mobile device.

I imagine it might send audio via HDMI to your speakers and perhaps the same audio via BT to the mobile device and compare the two audio inputs. Or not. Since there's no video being captured and you don't get to select any test specific audio attributes I don't see the point (yet). However this is a beta feature with all that implies.

*This bit makes it sound like this is for TV speakers. Not AVRs/soundbars.

This solution is the best because the hdmi lip sync protocol seems to be implemented poorly across systems.

This is an inspired solution to a bad problem if implemented well.
I don't know that's why I'm asking. I'm not part of that beta. It sounds like a manual test and if it is then it sounds limiting. It's similar to the Shield TV manual adjuster with the bouncing ball but utilizing the phone as a mic adjusting it for you. There is just so many variables with different frame rates and audio formats that I don't think one adjustment fixes the HDMI lip sync.

Yes that is correct. Sad if it is only a solution for say airplay speakers.

Two links have already been posted here about this new beta feature. You can start by reading that content. I'm sure there will be more (endless) discussion about the wonder or pointlessness of this capability -- as it's currently understood.

Matrix Trilogy

Matrix Reloaded and Resolution will not load to play on my ATV 4K. The first Matrix does play. After spending some time on the phone with Apple and adding the suggested Belkin hi-speed cable, I was told some customers are having issues with the DV Atmos version of the last two Matrix movies. Just thought I’d mention it in case someone else is having the same issue.
Apple did refund my money for the trilogy. I like the ease and price of purchasing movies to stream, but there’s something to be said about having a shiny spinning disc......

As the ATV 4K is the only Apple device I own it would have been nice if there was a way to manually adjust the audio sync.

As far as I can tell I don't have the ability to adjust a/v sync in my sources (except the OPPO). I can fix constant offsets with my AVR but source offsets can vary.

TBH the function to adjust audio sync on the fly is on boxes such as a Zidoo or Dune where you are playing your own media and not streaming apps. My point was that this is typical of Apple offering a solution that exists entirely within their walled garden!

Anti-Apple tropes are typically information-free but this observation seems particularly confusing. In any case all systems have design constraints.

Fortunately no one is forcing you to buy Apple products.

I simply meant that if you own an Apple TV - which I do and love BTW - but don't own a iPhone or iPad you can't take advantage of this new feature.

I vividly remember sitting in a coffee shop, circa 1991, with my first new Apple laptop (used for business). No internet back then, but what freedom! I can't even begin to count the number of comments I've received about Apple's faults in coffee shops. Just thinking out loud

Yes, there are a number of ATV "features" which require an extra Apple device. As far as I know none of them prevent you from using an ATV to watch video or listen to audio.

By the way, given the current behavior it looks like Apple is trying to correct for distance from display/speakers to seating position (~3ms/m). I'm not aware that people consider this to be a problem unless you're in a very large room.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

My guess is that then they really are just solving for WiFi / Bluetooth speaker lag. It is a problem but not the general lip sync issue that they could have tackled.

Edited: unless they synch to a video image it really is unclear it this solves anything other than knowing the absolute audio lag. But without knowing the video lag it cannot solve people’s problems, even with wireless speakers.

Hi folks.
Does anyone here use multiple Apple TV 4K in your house?

I just ordered a second Apple TV 4K to use in our bedroom and wondering what would be the best way in terms of Apple ID?

Do you guys prefer to use the same Apple ID across multiple ATV or different Apple IDs?
(All of our family members use iPhone and family sharing is enabled across our Apple IDs.)

Currently the Computers app needs a consistent ID for Home Sharing and the ATV needs a consistent ID for iCloud features (e.g. Home Screen layout). Family Sharing is easier if you use the same ID but sharing is supported. I use the same IDs (Apple and iTunes) on all of mine. Apple really needs [to] fix iCloud sharing.

Yes. That was my point earlier before I tried to imagine how the current process could be useful.

I posted the relevant images in the beta thread. The only thing missing is the wavefront animation. You can see a single frame of it in the third ATV image.

I searched this thread for “HomePod” to see if any one is using stereo HomePods as the output for their Apple TV. It doesn’t look like anyone here is. I read a while ago that if you set the HomePods as the out of the Apple TV that the change wouldn’t stay. Also that the left and right channels could could get out of sync.

I wanted to see if those issues have been fixed?

I have 3 in my home and the main account of all of them is the same Apple ID and it all syncs perfectly as far as the home screen layout and installed apps.

With tvOS 13, you can add additional accounts but I would recommend having the same base/primary account on all of them if you are going to "manage" them.

Bluetooth from Apple TV4K is only SBC. I tested with my Sony WH1000XM3 Headphones which shows the bluetooth codec name in its Sony Headphone IOS APP. It shows SBC when connected to both my AppleTV4K devices and AAC when connected to my iPhone and iPad.

SBC Sounds awful. Very compressed. I complained to Apple about it. They replied that it does support AAC over Bluetooth.

I think there will be a hardware update to Apple TV4K this September to offer:
1. Better processing power for Gaming.
2. Possible update to support HDR 10+ and HDR HLG.
3. Faster frame rates at 120fps for certain games.
4. A H1 Chip for blue tooth which is on the Airpods 2 and Beats pro.
5. Support for Game Controllers - Xbox and Playstation

I've not heard any rumors, but your list seems plausible with my only major hmm being the HDR10+. We shall see

A prediction based on a few things including the launch of gaming services Apple announced this year in a keynote speech.

And maybe it will stream 2020 Olympics in HDR HLG.

I'll just note that the H1 part is used in headphones -- the ATV4K already supports BT 5.0 -- and Apple announced Xbox and Playstation controller support on the ATV4k as part of tvOS 13. I'm not saying that there won't be new hardware announced in the fall but it won't be for the above reasons.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

Yes aware that it is part of Headphone Bluetooth connectivity.

I forgot that the controllers compatibility were already announced - good call.
