Yes the ATV app shows it as HDR but if you go via the Amazon app on the ATV it is just showing as UHD. It also plays in just UHD. I'm currently watching The Boys on the Amazon app on my Samsung bluray player which correctly shows and plays it in UHD HDR.

It’s your statement about lossless audio (bitstreaming).

"You have to use the latest version of DVDfab to remux the UHD rip to single layer DV in an mp4 container. The major downside is that you will lose HD audio (and chapter support). Now we just need matroska to add DV support to the MKV container."

Which is exactly why I stopped doing NAS, Plex, Infuse, etc. Not only do you need to do that kind of messing around you need the hardware with the CPU/GPU muscle to do that messing around.

DV playback from rips is still very much in its infancy. I was able to play a DV test file with DTS-HD (mp4 container) in Infuse without issue. Haven't gotten one with TrueHD to work yet. I'm just happy progress is being made. Ideally, matroska would add DV support to MKV containers. That would solve a lot of compatibility issues.

That particular issue, no. The only trouble I've had with Dolby Atmos on ATV 4K is occasional pop/dropout artifacts that we think are related to the Dolby MAT implementation.

On Apple TV as you guys are discussing, is just missing HDR. However, on my TV app, it shows in Dolby Vision but no Atmos. Such a mess these platforms are.

I’d blame Amazon and their half arsed app implementation. NetFlix and others seem to do OK

I still have a plex server and infuse on my ATV4k. It still has almost 1000 titles on it but it already shrank from about 1500. I have a sort of windfall coming, I would like to just buy all the stuff that's available digitally and turn off Plex/Infuse forever

Of course there will always be some things you can't get online and so I guess that will never happen unless I resolve I've seen those content items enough.

However, going in the opposite direction I recently rebuild my Mac Mini music server for high res audio only... (other audio I get from Apple Music) High Res Audio in stereo is easy using my iPhone and Onkyo HF player app but High Res Surround Audio is still playing hard to get.

I'm running beta TVOS (not complaining but rather pointing out to others that may be considering) the latest beta has caused some major app issues for Netflix and Amazon Prime. Lot's of HDR stuff not working. Most of the DV stuff is ok. Both formats still work in the Movies app.

Are you sure it’s the beta? If so, how did you narrow it down to that? Netflix doesn’t have problems for me but Amazon has been discussed at length above.

Amazon issues are “global” for ATV4K. It’s been broken for about a week or two.

Yes, I saw that. Netflix has some issues now as well that appear to be intermittent and not an issue on other platforms.

Dear experts:

I’m posting in all four device threads as I am completely stumped.

4K sources: ATV 4K and Panasonic UB820
Displays: TCL R615 and JVC RS500
AVR: Denon 4300

Cables: all used have been Monoprice certified Hi Speed, or Ruipro. I’ve tried every one I own just in case. All the cables worked perfectly in every scenario excepting only the problems below. But in the end, to eliminate all variables, I wound up testing everything with the same two cables and the exact same inputs and outputs of my Denon. Because I have dual monitor outputs, I did test with both outputs on, and with only one at a time. Made no difference.

No matter what I do, I can not pass many needed 4K resolutions through my Denon 4300 to my TCL R615. I can pass any and all resolutions through the Denon to my RS500. I can pass any and all resolutions from either 4K source directly to the TV. I have tried every HDMI input on the Denon, and both HDMI outputs.

But from my ATV, (to the TV) I can not get HDR to pass through the Denon. The cable test always fails, and it reverts to 4K SDR.

From the UB820 (to the TV), I can not output 60HZ in HDR. I get an image that looks like a fuzzy all green scale image. For UHD discs, I can solve this by turning 24P to Auto. But that does not solve Amazon HDR. No matter what combinations of settings I use, all Amazon HDR content is displayed with this same green look. Netflix HDR looks fine as long as 24P is enabled.

To reiterate: All of these tests work perfectly through the Denon to the projector. They all work perfectly directly from device to the TV. I’ve eliminated all cable, and input/output variables, but when going through the Denon, I can not get HDR to my TV.

I’m hoping someone has an idea what’s going on.

Thanks very much,

Pip

While you later say all is normally working, it is clearly not. You have some issues and they are usually cable related.

FYI, i believe it is possible to use your 4300 AVR as a cable tester! You can google it up but basically involves connecting the monitor output to hdmi input 1 and running a built-in test. I have not done it myself as I don’t have issues but you may want to research it.

Edit: from reading your post again I think you should take it to the denon thread. If the ATV works when the AVR is not in the picture then it is not an ATV issue.

Thanks so much for your help, and thank very much for rereading. Perhaps I could have been clearer.

Just to be clear for anyone else following, I didn't say all is normal working. To reiterate: All of these tests work perfectly through the Denon to the projector. They all work perfectly directly from device to the TV. I’ve eliminated all cable, and input/output variables, but when going through the Denon, I can not get HDR to my TV.

I did test the cables - multiple ways. They all test and function perfectly in all scenarios except through the Denon to the TV.

I realise this is not specifically an ATV issue, which is why, as I said, I posted in all four device threads (and the cables thread too). Who knows where the genius who can figure this out will come from.

Thanks again,

Pip

I realise this is not specifically an ATV issue, which is why, as I said, I posted in all four device threads (and the cables thread too). Who knows where the genius who can figure this out will come from.

Thanks again,

Pip
You've posted the same question in the HDMI forum. It's best to keep your questions, and follow-ups to one forum as it makes it easier for us to help you and for others to Search if they have the same issues.

Pip

Do you have Video/4K Signal Format set to Enhanced mode on the Denon?

The difference between connecting the ATV 4K to the TV directly and receiver pass-through is typically you must turn an enhanced HDMI setting on for the receiver. Make sure device to receiver and receiver to TV are both using cables that can handle the bandwidth (18Gbps). HDMI premium certified cables are tested to handle the bandwidth at the length of the cable which I would recommend purchasing if you still have issues after verifying you enabled Enhanced mode on the receiver.

Thank you so much. Enhanced mode? Where is that setting. I can't find it in the Denon and a search for "enhanced" in the user manual turns up nothing but "enhanced' WEP security and "enhanced" localization with Atmos.

Al my cables test fine and are premium certified hi speed with the hologram tags.

I've been dealing with this all day. If it's really this "enhanced" setting, I've got your bar tab if you ever visit.

Thanks,

Piip
