Seeing as Quickstart On is the only way to get “best available”, I’m assuming that includes audio as well. You have to ask if one of the other guys using Xcode to see if there are different assets being received from those movies even though most of them are HD only.

In the single sample I checked disabling Quick Start disabled E-AC-3 (and sent 5.1).

Recently upgraded to a Sonos amp (which is Airplay2 compatible), want to set up the AppleTV 4K in that room to always output audio to those speakers instead on the TV’s built in speakers. It’s working well except the volume buttons on my Harmony 650 for this activity still changes the TV volume.

Anyone know how to make the volume buttons control the AppleTV volume rather than the TV volume?

I don't believe the AppleTV Device has a volume control (there isn't one on my Harmony device for ATV). I think you'd have to control the volume at the Sonos if that's possible.

You need to update your activity (for Harmony) is volume control is done via the Sonos rather than the TV).

When Quick Start is disabled on the Apple TV 4k, is the iTunes download version of the movie played and not the real streamed version of the movie since having Quick Start turned off has the same limitations that seem to pertain to the iTunes download version of the movie or the download version of any iTunes movie as well for that matter?

From Post 1...

  • The Quick Start option is found in Apps / iTunes ... Turning off Quick Start forces iTunes to HD content. Hence no UHD, HDR, Atmos or E-AC-3.

...so yes, you would only get the HD (download version) rather than the 4K streaming version (which isn’t available for download).

Hello folks,
I realize that the amazon app is basically broken for hdr and atmos streaming in most cases. I have noticed that, for example, "the boys" still streams in 4k but i'm not getting HDR on my setup. However, this show, along with others HD/4k tend to look a lot darker on amazon prime vs streaming on Netflix on my atv4k. Anyone else run into this? It seems to affect both standard HD and 4k shows.

Is anyone using the Acorn app to stream? I get lots of frame dropping even though I have both matches set. It does not happen on the Fire stick. Also, while in Acorn, the volume control does not work either on the apple TV or the TV.

Wish I could test it for ya. My library uses Kanopy while other libraries use Acorn.

Maybe the app for Acorn is needing an update.

Setting up a new ATV :0)

Im going to make the plunge into ATV. I have a 7.1.4 Denon X4300 system. My JVC RS400 does HDR with a 2.35:1 screen.

Not that it matters but i also have an inexpensive LG 4K player for BR/4K discs

Im currently using a ShieldTV for Spotify Pandora Netflix and A-Prime.

Any “need to knows” for an AppleTV noob setup wise.

As of Feb 20th still looking for a Marantz SR7010

Set video on the ATV for 4k SDR and turn match content on and then match dynamic range on (you can also turn on match frame rate but that does give some projectors issues. I leave it off for my projector).

Just rumors...the current ATV4K does almost everything currently available/needed with ease. The only thing I could see a “need” for was if they decide to up the specs for those that game. The things that people want (bitstreaming, etc) could be added by software most likely, so a new ATV4K would probably not have that. The new “buzz” is HDMI 2.1 capability, but for streaming (right now) nothing really takes advantage of those features so it would get a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ from me.

Thanks for sharing. I know the hardware on the current version is very advanced, I’d only wait to purchase if there was going to be a significant hardware upgrade.

Agreed. No credible rumors.

Could imagine cost reduced smaller device, or an ATV device with a mic/speaker for better HomeKit support (similar to a an ATV/HomePod combo) But for audio/video I would not expect to see a more capable device soon.

I haven't even heard many rumors but it is coming up on 2 years.

They could update the SOC, which might even have more RAM and more GPU for the games they are pushing.

Plus they may time it with the start of Apple + streaming.

But maybe with the AirPlay 2 initiative of getting TVs to play Apple content, maybe they won't bother.

Length of time doesn’t really matter in this case since the current hardware is so powerful/versatile. The only reason I could see them releasing something new is for gaming. On the video front current hardware plays near everything via apps.

Anyone having a problem with Amazon HDR? I cant get the new season of Bosch or The Boys to play in HDR, but Netflix and DV work fine. Just hooked my ATV4K up to my A9G. And yes, the UHD version, I can pull it up on my Sony 800M2 and it plays HDR fine, its just the ATV4K.

I agree a SOC revision, but also better Gaming Graphics to support Arcade services launch.

I agree, a new device just for HDMI 2.1 wouldn’t make sense, though some have reported better/faster HDMI syncing on TVs with HDMI 2.1, even when syncing to 2.0 processors. If there were other hardware upgrades they could make (upscaling, whatever) along with 2.1, then a new model might be worth it. Nothing I need.

Hi guys got a question about the upcoming new TV OS version. Right now we use my wife’s Apple ID on the device. With the new multiple profiles feature if I had a subscription on my ID for infuse would we be able to use it on the Apple TV?

Yes, just add your wife's ID to your Apple Family. But you don't need any new version of tvOS to do this. This has been available for a while now. Please see below:
