yup...even before the September 10th event rumors were that October would be when they would announce the updated ATV...yesterdays event was all about iPhone 11 and ATV+

Seems odd that they would announce ATV+ and not any new ATVs they have just around the corner but, hey, who knows. Supposedly they are going to announce several new iPad Pros next month, yet yesterday they announced one new (non-Pro) iPad so.....

Not that I’m getting ATV+, Nothing at launch interests me. But they could have at least offer those who have an ATV 3-6months of free service also at the least.

They could have but they chose instead to offer 1 year ATV+ free family membership to those who buy new iPhones, iPads, or macs. Not a bad deal if you are in the market for a phone anyway. Maybe if they introduce a new ATV in October they will extend the same deal to purchases of the new device.

Apple is in the business of selling hardware. Services are relatively new to Apple. Considering their success, I think they know what they are doing.

To be honest, $4.99 is about the same cost as one movie rental. If Apple adds more content in the coming months, $4.99 a month seems like a great deal. A lot really depends on the quality of the content that actually surfaces over then next year.

I'm planning on buying an Apple TV 4K soon (for Disney+) whether they announce a new model or not, so it looks like I'll be getting a free year of ATV+...the only show that's even mildly interesting to me is that Jason Momoa series 'See'...but even that doesn't look like a must-see series...the problem is that Apple is only going to show positive, uplifting family type of programming which is not what I prefer in my dramas

It would be nice to have gotten a free year for already owning a AppleTV but they might offer at least one month or something maybe. I’m not too worried about it though as nothing on it is really of interest to me so far. If there is a new AppleTV coming it would be interesting to see what it offers. The current 4K one is fast so if it’s just the new chip it won’t warrant a purchase for me.

With that,

The main reason I would buy it over is I can distribute the old one to my kids and it makes it easy for them to access our library. Family sharing doesn't work as well as giving everyone an ATV4K.

Usually Apple will reduce prices if a product is being replaced with a model.

If they replace the ATV4K and keep the ATV HD they might not adjust the HD price.

I didn’t hear them say people can get the one year free sub if you purchase the ATV4K. I heard new iPhones, iPads and Mac’s were the only products eligible for that but I could have missed it.

Edit: I stand corrected.

You were correct. They did not say it on stage (my remembrance as well, or I have the same memory block as you) but the written material as has been noted include the ATV.

My only question, why not an Apple Watch! ;-)

I just joined the free trial on Disney+ and installed the app on my Apple TV first bug(?) I found is HDR doesn't seem to work, and "match framerate" also doesn't work. This means HDR advertised movies are sent out in BT.709 on my system. And framerate is 50 which I assume is wrong. Dolby Atmos is triggered on my receiver.

I know this is an issue because other apps I use do send out HDR10 to my projector on 24fps.

Nasty surprise for Atmos users!

Just noticed that the Atmos tracks for several movies have been removed from items brought from iTunes.

Affected items from my library include Saving Private Ryan and Fury Road, two Atmos showcase movies that are now just 5.1.

I called them up yesterday and they told me that this kind of stuff happens (usually related to licensing and such) and that there's nothing else they can do about it. Also strange is that since Fury Road is a Movies Anywhere title, I still see Atmos on the Vudu version on their website but it does not play as Atmos on the Apple TV.

Watch it for a while, like days from now, and you will probably see it come back. This stuff happens in iTunes all the time.

I only noticed because I was trying to test some volume levels for my speakers.

Same block or extremely literal since Cook said "Apple TV" not "Apple TV 4K".
I'd write tcook with your watch invoice attached and ask for the free year.

I will say the naming between Apple’s TV App, Apple TV+ and AppleTV 4K is just all very confusing.

Are you sure about Saving Private Ryan? It’s never had atmos on the U.K. iTunes version. Regional differences do happen of course.

Pretty sure I have it right... Here is a snippet from the Sound and Vision website: Bitstream audio means the receiver will decode all the sound, this is generally the easiest option for newer AVRs. PCM means the device itself decodes the sound and sends it.

Mmm. Interesting. Still, Atmos is still gone from Fury Road and some other movies. Hopefully they come back. Fury Road had an amazing track (still good in 5.1) that I’ll miss.

Dude, I think you are misinterpreting what he wants. He wants the streaming device to send the unaltered/undecoded bitstream to the AVR so the AVR can do all the decoding. Unfortunately the way the ATV does it is not the best, it 's just the way Apple wants to do it. Pretty typical for Apple.

This sums it up really well.

Streaming boxes that do bitstream audio exist.

There is an actual reason the ATV4K doesn't bitstream and that is because it features Siri.

There is no indication ATV4K will ever bitstream audio.

What has been suggested is the AppleTV app (presumably with iTunes library access) will port to other streaming boxes soon so that should solve this problem for those waiting for this feature.
