That is funny, I remember it being discussed (although I was in Florida paying more attention to Dorian), but yeah If you can wait you probably should.

A new "Apple TV"?

For those not keeping score at home here's a list of common names and model identifiers:
  • Apple TV 1st Generation AppleTV1,1
  • Apple TV 2nd Generation AppleTV2,1
  • Apple TV 3rd Generation AppleTV3,1 or AppleTV3,2
  • Apple TV 4th Generation (HD) AppleTV5,3
  • Apple TV 5th Generation (4K) AppleTV6,2
  • rumored Apple TV "6th" Generation AppleTV11,1
Apple can certainly fiddle model identifiers at whim but maybe the AppleTV11,1 is something (completely) new and different.

Given Apple’s push for TVs to have the TV app and Airplay directly to included in TVs it would not be a huge leap to someday expect them to make an inexpensive HDMI stick device that only had those features. The stick would also include AppleTV+, Apple Music support and Apple Arcade—other Apps “perhaps” just to compete with Roku. This would fit in with growing service revenue which financially they want to do. They don’t care much about the revenue from the hardware itself as the TV deals show.

Or the device could be the ATV4k Pro that includes bit-streaming and (other pro features such TOS and other ports? )

Very valid points.

I like my two ATV4Ks but they are no longer the only game in town when the ATV App with iTunes propagates to other devices. Other devices already do Dolby Vision and Atmos less expensively.

Good News,

Refurbished Apple items qualify for the free year of AppleTV+

This was the response I got.

"This limited time offer applies to both new and refurbished models, including devices from the iPhone Upgrade Program, is not restricted to any specific sales channel (e.g., Apple Store, resellers) and will be available in all countries where Apple TV+ will launch.”

Although they do mean any authorized sales channel. I don't imagine anyone would expect to get the incentive from a random ebay seller but some entities (Amazon) can make the source somewhat obscure.

Amazon redux or still dead

Good news: I saw a report that the Firestick 4K has a new button that exposes watching choices which includes UHD/HDR. This could be ported to other platforms.
Bad news: UHD seems to be significantly broken (more so than usual) on the ATV. Every UHD object I checked throws the 'please try again later' error. HD versions are working.

More Ways
to Watch

Which in the case of (an already started) Carnival Row opens to Prime (HD) and Prime (UHD/HDR) with the default being HD because Amazon just can't stop being Amazon.

I use my FireTV Stick where DoVi is working but Atmos isn't. Not that you might know given the dearth of Atmos. There's been some talk in the Atmos thread about Amazon doing some work on the back-end which is supposed to be done soon. So either we'll get working UHD/HDR soon or this is the new normal.

I would expect them doing work in the background is the issue, since it comes and goes with no updates to the app. We can only hope once they are done it’s fixed for the near future.

That’s why it’s good to have other options. If it’s not the shortcomings of a streaming box, it’s the shortcomings of a streaming service. Certainly not a perfect world yet. That’s why I’m not getting involved in the lack of this or that. It is what it is at this time. Maybe someday we’ll get a box that does it all, but I’m not holding my breath.

Available on the Amazon Fire TV 4K Stick. After checking my Roku Ultra, Sony Android display and the Apple TV 4K it is only the Amazon device that currently has the button.

I had a chance to setup/use the Apple’s TV app on a Samsung Q70 TV that a friend just bought. Looks like the TV app we all know—which I don’t often use. AirPlay also worked very well with the TV. But for me I use my ATV4k to do other things in my Apple eco system like photos for screen savers, and Apple Music that I’m not sure I’d use Apple’s TV app. I did not use the app for long (was busy setting up a bunch of stuff) so I did not see if it had features not in the other versions of the TV app.

Sorry to interrupt the 4K discussion.......but I have an old ATV 3rd generation that I want to put in my workout room. Does this generation still support most of the streaming apps, Netflix, Hulu, sporting apps, etc? Thanks

The 3rd generation supports a variety of Apple bundled apps (~50 tv or quasi-tv channels) including Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube and a scaled-down version of Apple TV. No Vudu, Movies Anywhere or other "new" apps and no app store.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I just called Amazon. It is a known issue affecting Apple TV 4K. He saw no notes on it affecting any other devices. The Amazon guy told me the notes state it is all 4K. He had me try a few 4K titles. Non worked - except: "You Are Wanted" It took about 2-3 minutes to start, so something is wrong overall, but it did finally play. It does not have HDR. I asked him to make a note of that because all the other 4K titles I tried are content that has HDR and all of them gave the error. I told him about the on-going problem of Amazon HDR and AppleTV, suggesting maybe that problem is related to this newest snafu. Hopefully, he passes that to the team working on the problem.

Dolby Atmos sound missing: Apple Tv 4k
I have my Apple Tv 4k connected through the Oppo UDP-203 (HDNI IN ) through the Denon AVR-X3200W.
When I check the Apple Tv settings under Audio, I don’t have the Immersive Audio option just the Auto option.
Can Someone tell please what am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

If you plug it in directly to the AVR does it work? If so then it’s a setting or your Oppo that’s the issue.

@mappetti , it is known that the HDMI input on the 203 doesn't support the type of Atmos used by the ATV4K (Dolby MAT 2.0)

Main: UN78HU9000/SEK-3500 | X4500H (Klipsch/HSU 5.1.4) | UDP-203 (fw 65-0131) | TiVo Bolt | Roku P+
2nd: UN65JS9500 | LG LAS855M | UBD-K8500 | Chromecast Ultra | AppleTV4K | TiVo Mini
3rd: 65P-F1 | Klipsch HDT-SB3 | UBP-X700 | Tivo Roamio | AppleTV4K
FS - Scarface and other UHD Digital codes (and some HD codes)

Connect it directly to the Denon. Why do you need to have it connected to the Oppo first?
