I have the ATV4K set to use yellow as the subtitle color but the Netflix app appears to ignore that setting.

AFAIK the subtitle settings one can change on the Netflix website do not apply to the ATV app. They apply on Roku or a computer, but not on the ATV. I've never tried to change ATV Netflix subtitle color. I'll try tomorrow and report back. In the meantime, you might need to force quit the Netflix app and restart it for the changes to take effect. Give that a try.

Detach the power cable from the back of the ATV4K box and leave it disconnected for a few minutes. Then, reconnect the power cable and see if it boots. If it does, but still does not respond to your remote, then charge your remote.

If none of this works, then yes, your unit’s power supply has failed. If so, I’d contact Apple Support. Sometimes they will offer a generous discount towards a new unit if one fails prematurely just outside of the warranty period.

Already tried the reboot several times. Found a Hail Mary teardown plan on Reddit that I might try.

About two weeks ago I read a comment in a post from a different forum about a girl who had a similar issue to yours. Hers was also over 2 years old. She called Apple and they sent her a new one.
I’d make that phone call and find out before taking yours apart.

I agree with @m_snow as Apple is typically very good with this sort of thing. Some of the best CE manufacturers will stand behind their products even if they’re outside of their published warranty. Apple is one of those. However, no manufacturer will stand behind a product that has been altered, serviced or otherwise tampered with by the end user.

I also think that you should at least make a call to Apple Support first...

There were rumors appletv is dead because of the company’s focus in service centric model when they came up with appletv +

Is it really dying a slow death?

No change. Have you folks actually tried it yourself? I ask because if it does work for you then I must have something wrong with my approach on getting it to work.

I think you're right about it not working on the ATV4K Netflix app. I logged out and re-logged back in and even deleted the app and reinstalled it and nothing changes. I've been using my Nvidia Shield Pro as it does respect the subtitle settings at the Netflix site. I don't use the Roku for Netflix as it's locked to 60 Hz playback, the Roku does not have frame rate matching on Netflix.

There was a rumor Apple is releasing a new AppleTV box, but with the pandemic and Apple being so reliant on overseas slave-wage manufacturing, who knows what will happen.

Are you sure it’s over two years? Could your credit card cover the second year? My first one died inside year two and Amex covered me.

I also agree, I had one of the first Apple Watches (pre Series 1), about two years later the screen popped open. Took it to the Apple store and they set me up with a callback from Apple support. They asked a few questions and then gave me a free exchange to a new Series 1, so replaced and upgraded well out of warranty. Worth a shot.

One of Ebert's Great Movies and I certainly agree! I will have to add that to my Wish List as currently I have it "only" on Blu-ray disk 1080p.

Two reasons I like iTunes movies: free upgrades to 4K, and I can't accidentally buy a movie twice, as I've done with discs sometimes over the years!

Can anyone tell me why I can't get DD+ on my receiver with passthrough set on my tv? I have a non 4k receiver and its connected via ARC on receiver to my ARC on my tv. I have an Roku TV. I have an Apple 4k box connected to HDMI port 1. So again, I have the Roku TV setting in audio setting set to passthrough. Now my internal roku apps like Netflix and Amazon will output to the receiver DD+. All is good and well.

Now I have the Apple box on auto setting of course and if I stream Netflix or Amazon then I only get DD not DD+. Why is this? I am assuming cause Apple does the internal decoding of PCM and not bitstream?

Your TV may not pass DD+ from external sources. And the AppleTV doesn't send out DD+ anyway as a bitstream but as PCM which it would seem even more unlikely for your TV to convert into a DD+ signal?

Thanks that's what I kinda figured. Same goes for the Xbox. Looks like I need a new 4k receiver to get lossless audio. I think Arc blows anyway, I guess until e/arc becomes the norm.

Well to get lossless from your TV you’d need an AVR AND a TV that supports eARC. For DD+ Atmos those are not specifically needed. Even when eARC becomes the norm I have a feeling it won’t be much different from ARC.

Hi guys were looking at killing our cable in a week or so and going all streaming. We already had Amazon prime, Netflix, and Hulu anyway. There's a few things I can't find yet and hoping you guys can help me find which apps and subscriptions we would need on our ATV for channels like BBC America for Dr who, TNT, and Syfy. Do we pretty much just have to wait for that stuff to come out after the season is over and stream on Netflix or something?

You would need a live streaming service that has the channels that you are looking for, like YoutubeTV, Hulu Live, Sling, etc. I have Youtube TV and I believe it has BBC, TNT, and SyFy - I'm not sure about the others.

Do we pretty much just have to wait for that stuff to come out after the season is over and stream on Netflix or something?
You can buy the seasons of Dr Who on iTunes. The episode is available the next day after it airs on BBC America. For me, buying the seasons of shows is cheaper than paying for cable or even paying for a streaming service. Plus you get surround sound and a better picture quality.
