At well under $300, the X800 was kind of a no-brainer. It may also be an "intermediate" box if the higher-end players resolve their various issues. I'm going to need a major theater upgrade, probably next year. But for now I can play non-Sony 4K movies.

I think it's worth selling. That being said, I still have mine since I'm too lazy to bother selling it. I dusted it off this weekend and looked at a few things. But it's rare that I bother using it. It looks like they are only going for around $80 on Ebay. After shipping and fees, it's not worth it for me to mess around with it.

Although if someone had some type of a special trade in locally, for $75, I would jump on it at this point.

EDIT: Hmmm.... I might just try trading it in Amazon. I just looked and I see they have a trade in value over $80.

EDIT: I just went ahead and initiated the Amazon trade in. Hopefully it meets their requirements and they take it. But at least if not, they will just ship it back to me. I only paid $150 for it when I originally got it. So if I can get a decent Amazon gift card for it now I will be pleased. My FMP-X10 is really just taking up space now. Since I rarely ever use it any more.

Call me crazy but I just can't seem to part with my X10. I have the Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-Ray player as well as a ROKU 4 which both do Netflix and Amazon 4K streaming but, for some reason, I seem to fall back to my F10 as the preferred Netflix player. It just seems to work better and get to the movies faster. Since I use it with my Sony VPL-VW1100 Projector, which doesn't support HDR, I don't need the HDR capabilities in newer devices. That is also the main reason I went with the Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-Ray player as it does an excellent job of HDR to SDR conversions on the UHD Blu-Rays. I previously had a Samsung UBD-K8500 but it didn't do a very good job of playing HDR content on SDR devices.

Sweet!! Amazon accepted my FMP-X10 trade in. I got 75% of the cost that I paid for it in December 2015. So I am very pleased.

Good job on selling yours before they closed the store. It looks like the rest of us will only have a few more months before our X-1/10 turn into bricks.

Wow, that’s a bummer! So how are you supposed to play them back? Are they removing the DRM? This would be the most customer friendly solution and I believe that other stores did exactly this when they closed the door. Or are you stuck with the Sony player to play back your movies, until the player stops working or your HDD fails?

It's Sony, so I'm betting it's the latter: you can watch your downloaded movies for as long as the device doesn't fail.

I have owned my FMP-X10 since they first came out. I used it for a couple of weeks then disconnected it and removed it from my system. Now I have people asking me about amazon fire sticks and various other streaming devices. Is the FMP-X10 a streaming device like the Fire Stck or the Fire TV?

Hi Andy, yes it is, it's not as convenient and I don't think it has as many steaming apps as the Amazon Fire Stick but that's what it does it streams Netflix.

Just curious, who would buy this product, knowing that Sony is closing down the 4K store at the end of the year?

I'm curious to see what will happen when the store closes. Does this also mean that Sony will not longer support the X10? Several months ago, I nearly purchased Bram Stoker's Dracula but hesitated because of the cost and download time. I also held off on the Supreme Cinema Series because of a hunch of what release might follow. I'm glad I resisted both. I just bought the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + UltraViolet combo for $15 on amazon.

It is my understanding that you won't have the ability to download any new movies but any movies you have already downloaded will continue to be playable. In addition, the Netflix and Amazon streaming apps will continue to work. I would imagine that there won't be any future updates to the streaming apps but that is just my assumption.

Has anybody looked into backing up the hard drive and/or an external hard drive connected to this machine? I would like to try to preserve my purchases before discontinues the service.

I don't believe we are able to get our purchased and free movies later.

You can buy an external drive (up to I think 3 TB) but at this point, what is the point? Your movies will be on the X1 or X10 player as long as the player works. Sony is discontinuing the service, not the movies you've purchased or gotten preloaded for free. If you can't buy anymore movies, and your internal drive is holding them, you're fine. If the player croaks, the external drive is also useless.

Sit back and let it fade out. Your movies are safe....

edited to add: you might as well stuff that internal drive with all the free selections the Ultra service still has. I think I have $18 left in my SEN account, which was part of the $300 Sony credit they gave me when I switched from the X1 to the X10, on their dime.

I guess what I am trying to guard against is my hard drive crashing, not the unit itself. If I have everything on an external drive (or internal) and that drive crashes, I don't think Sony is going to let me download them again from someplace. So if I can back up the external drive through an image copy or some such method and the drive crashes, then perhaps I can recover my movies by restoring the image to a new hard drive.

You can back up your library to an external.

If the internal drive on the X10 (I assume) crashes, you POSSIBLY can run the external drive thru the player and watch your films. I am not sure, but if the drive goes, most likely the player will be toast.

I have been able to move them all to the external drive, but then they are removed from the internal drive. I hoped that someone here might have tried then putting the external drive in a LINUX system or other and performed an image capture of the drive or some other method.

I understand you're saying that if the drive fails that has your movies on it then they will be gone permanently. I believe the drive has the highest risk of failure due to the mechanical nature of hard drives.

I am not sure if there is any other option.

Since 12/17 was the date that the Sony Movie Download service for the X10 was supposed to go away, I checked it out this evening and sure enough, I got a message that the service had been discontinued.

Although the message said that it would have no affect on the streaming apps, I couldn't get Netflix to work. I don't know if it was just a quirk or related but I tried both 4K and non 4K content but neither would play. They would buffer to 100% and then return to the content selection screen. Didn't spend much time trying to figure out what was going on, since I also have Netflix on my Blu-Ray and Roku devices. I do still prefer the Netflix on the X10 though... It usually just seems quicker and more stable.

I just initiated the Amazon trade and got a $75 estimate. That will be better than nothing assuming it goes through.

I'm doing the same before the price goes down or they realize the Sony FMP-X10 isn't worth the $75 trade-in. I've had mine listed locally for $75 for almost nine months and I've had a few offers of $50. I'll get $75 from Amazon and be happy (since I got it for free from Best Buy after purchasing the Sony 850B a few years back).

So I sold my FMPX10 before doing a factory reset. I don't recall the sign in/order protocol to purchase content. Should I be worried?

The service is no more, so there's nothing to purchase. On the X10, even with the most simplified, streamlined purchase procedure, you had to enter a 5 digit code to make the "buy" on the Ultra Network.

Also, the unit is essentially worthless if it is wiped clean. Who would buy it if it didn't have a hand full of movies?

Good to know. I forgot all about the 5 digit code. If I was still "logged on" when I disconnected it from my TV, is there a way to access one's PSN account through the X10 and obtain any stored credit card info?
