They are all different and may even be different compression on the time of day. Generally during prime time my 1080i stations are running around 14-16mbps with the rest used for the subchannels...but even so the compression is still less than what Comcast and DirecTV run....but alas this thread is going off topic...OTA is generally always the best quality including Cable or Satellite, so comparing sling to OTA is not a good comparison.

So I just turned on Travel Channel in my office. I think alot of the issue is the actual content. Anthony Boudrain show was on. Very fuzzy/soft. Commercials came on for Universal Studios and Burger king. Much cleaner good details for the most part.

Taking a picture won't help show it really, but if you watch it, see if you see what I see on travel channel.

Ha, over course commercials would be high quality. Would not want us paying to watch low quality commercials =P

Since most of the programming on Sling is from cable nets let the comparison be on picture quality on Sling vs Cable vs Satellite. OTA is not carrying this programming and is not applicable. And if we are going to pick nits OTA picture quality has been slipping.

Most of the annoying pre roll ads on YouTube and Hulu Plus are not even in HD. They look and sound terrible but the programs are in HD though.

Noticed today that they are starting to insert ads on the espn channels (in place of the ESPN banner). No big deal, not sure how long it's been like that.

Are they maybe using the network feed vs. the web feed? I know with ESPN 3 that some times there are ads and other times not.

Possibly network feed. But they are definitely inserting their own ads also. Saw ad for sling TV movies and box trolls movie on demand.

Here's an example of the black crush I mentioned. From No Reservations on Travel.

Sharpness was acceptable, my complaint is with blown out color and compressed dynamic range which seems to be present in all content, at least on Travel (including the commercials).

50" Panasonic GT25
Denon AVR1911
Klipsch RF62 II - RC52 II - Hsu VTF-15H
HTPC - i7 3770k @ 4.6GHz, GTX 780, 16Gb
Kodi (MPC-HC MadVR)

Well
I bought the Deal at Sling Tv. Roku 3 pay a few months and get the Roku
for 1/2 price. I got the $20 deal that has as of now 17 channels.
Looks really good......lol when it works. Buffering.....Freeze up. Now Last night AMC
was really busy. ESPN was not this morning.
Right now the Slingtv is on my lap top. Wifi-54 Dsl-100 Mbps.

I have watched many movies on Much Movies HD via XBMC (KODI).
It looks HD and it is a very stable system.
Sling as of now is not.

are you using a roku? roku is known for crushed blacks due to outputing in RGB. there are threads in the roku forums going back years about how it doesnt play nice with receivers and TV's because of the RGB output.

Hi Aero 1, I'm using Windows 8.1 with Nvidia GTX 780 HDMI into my receiver. Color space is set to full range 0-255 on the PC and TV, other PC sources look great (primarily MPC-HC).

By the way, I noticed the same problem when testing on my work PC so it persists despite my individual setup.

I too had crushed blacks on Sling TV on a Roku 3 Sunday night, my first night with Sling TV and the Roku 3 for that matter. All other Roku material was fine, only Sling TV was super dark.

I signed in today to agree about the dark blacks. But I have good news. As of Monday Sling TV now looks normal on all channels, as far as the crushed blacks go. I hope it holds.

The commercials are terrible. Often ill see the same commercial repeat until the show starts up again. Sometimes, commercials get cut off so the show can resume. They are clearly not the live broadcast commercials. More sources of ad revenue, why would they be... :roll eyes:

Here's close to the same frame from an alternate source, still pretty dark but a lot more shadow detail compared to the sling stream.

This is with MPC-HC and MadVR

I notice the same on a Firetv with Sing and AMC. Better call Saul has really bad crushed blacks. Watching this show on AMC live with the commercials is just painful. Destroys any flow. I won't be renewing sling at the end of the free period.

It's great for folks that want live sport and rolling news however.

Watching Espn2 is starting to be beyond aggravating. Same Toyota commercial repeating and then it will just freeze and I have to switch to another channel and come back. It doesn't ever freeze while the program is on just when they cut to commercials. This has got to smooth out its becoming more than a nuisance.

same schedule for me, just shifted for timezone difference. Looks like Sling is using Eastern Time zone.

Anyone else have problems with the Sling TV Windows App popping up information about the current channel randomly even when you're not moving the mouse or touching the keyboard?

I have this problem on both Windows 8.1 machines I have. One using an Intel HD5000 and the other an nVidia GTX 980 (Gaming machine, obviously).

I don't have any other versions of Windows so I don't know if it's a Windows 8.1 thing, just noting the operating system I'm running.

Here's a video of what happens (happens at the very beginning and near the end of the video):

Like I said, I'm not moving the mouse or touching the keyboard, and the information pops up randomly while I'm watching things. There isn't any rhyme or reason, sometimes it pops up in short intervals, sometimes long. But it always takes me out of the television viewing experience.

I have even disconnected the keyboard and mouse totally from the machine after I've tuned into a channel with no results...

I e-mailed support and asked for help about it, and I got two canned responses so far which didn't relate to the issue I am having at all. (Walls of text canned responses.)

I've just sent them another e-mail with this video link asking them to pass it onto an engineer so I can get a real solution or at least let them be aware of the problem... I hope I get something from them soon, but just wondering if anyone has experienced this.

Thanks

Sony XBR-75X950G, Denon AVR-X2300W, Polk CS20 Center, Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Polk TSI300 Rears, Power Sound Audio S1500 Subwoofer.

I got my Roku 3 yesterday 3-12-15.
It looks and performs so much better than my laptop( roku even seemed to help the laptop as well) that after testing for 24 hours I decided to upgrade to the $5 sports package.

It does pause but not like last week. Mine is on a 42" LG 1080p TV. When I change channels it gets fuzzy for a few seconds then a really clear sharp picture. The darks are like
when I saw Sky Fall at my AMC theatre. I thought I was at home. That Strange Dark--
Well Sky Fall had it. It was during the week. I sat high up in the stadium seating . Looked
inside the projection booth . SONY? That's not a 35mm projector. It said 4K. I wasn't
familiar with it at the time. That being 4k projectors. Is 35mm film going away too?

Well I hope SlingTV is the start of something really Good. The channels I have I watched on AT&T Uverse. AMC- TNT- TBS- ESPN -CNN.
I would like FX or USA or even a weather channel that actually has WEATHER.

As of today with the Sports package I have 26 channels.

I forgot to mention, before I cancelled, I used Reflector to airplay my iPad (and phone) to my HTPC so I could watch sling on there... kind of nice since a regular remote didn't work for sling on the PC. I could pause, change channels, etc... just a thought over Roku. I hate switching HDMI/sources too...

One would hope, but if the service gains momentum, Scumcast (AKA Comcast) will start to freak out about it and demand hostage fees from Dish, which in turn will cause monthly fees to go up!
