??? Just connect an external drive to the USB or eSata port. Although I have never tried my eSata connection. But I have at least half a dozen enclosures I could try it out. But I prefer to use network storage with my VTEN. Although I do have a 32GB SD card installed for local storage of some small test files.

I don't know if everyone saw, but Cloud Media just released their dual-boot 4K Popcorn Hour A-500 Pro. The specs are shaping it up to be a beast for both audio and videophiles. Just started a new thread on it if anyone is interested in continuing the discussion.

One thing I don't like about players that don't allow for an internal drive is that external drives usually have those stupid blinking LEDs with I/O activity. However, I can't justify spending that much for the A-500 Pro to replace my ancient, but still working A-110. I'm also still confused about the whole VTEN-U deal, which doesn't appear to get all of the firmware updates that the non -U model gets? I'm also curious if anyone can distill down to why exactly the VTEN would be a better choice than the Roku 4 in terms of the ability to playback video (h.264/h.265) files with DTS audio (not stream from Netflix and the like which I have a smart TV to do that)... or is the Roku 4 a better choice at this point?

Well 1 the VTEN supports a more robust listing of files than the R4. The VTEN also supports lossless audio (TrueHD, DTSMAHD, Atmos, etc). The R4 does NOT support [email protected] either.
The only difference that I know of between the VTENU and the VTEN is that the NA market version will not downmix DD and the U/EU version will.

Roku has a very specific set of codecs. Roku4 with not play h.264 UHD. It only goes to 1080. After that you need h.265.

Additionally there a're bandwidth constraints.

Popcorn has a far wider set of codec.

Oh and black sharpie or duct tape that HDD light.

Or get some LightDims.

http://www.lightdims.com/

I use them on dozens of LEDs to either reduce the light output or eliminate it. You can get the LightDims to block 100% of the light or block 50% to 80% of the light.

Thanks. I always assume the PH units with the Sigma chips are overall more capable, but then I have friends who have always gone with the WD Live or Roku 3 and they never seem to complain about not being able to play anything.

WD live was sigma based. Was usually a generation behind what the current offerings from DUNE or PH were. As for the ROKU 3 anyone running one for content that they have local usually run something like plex. They let plex transcode on the fly to a format that the roku can play. It works well enough for most people but then you miss out on things like TRUEHD/DTSHD and some of the higher bitrate content as you need a beefy computer to transcode a 1:1 bluray on the fly.

What is the reason for choosing a powered hub over a non-powered one?

All PCH models have always had weak powered USB ports. So if you are going to be hanging 3 drives off of it. I would go with a powered HUB to reduce problems.

I don't know about the eSata connection. But I've connected a bunch of 2.5" USB 3.0 powered hard drives to the VTEN without any issues.

Does anyone know if NMJ supports local stores trailer files? I have a large collection of blu-rays and have people over regularly that watch movies. The only thing holding me back is whether NMJ will recongize trailer files stored in the movie folders.

Thanks.

From memory NMJ does not support local trailer files but if you run yamj/eversion as the jukebox it does support trailers.
