I'm talking about the built-in apps on TV/displays like the Vizio's, LG's, Chromecast Ultra, etc. Also, some UHD players like the LG UHD player also does Dolby Vision. It's not just streamers I was referring to.

It doesn’t even do everything. Amazon outputs stereo from the Apple TV, it doesn’t support bitstream passthrough for local media files(no atmos or dts:x), no atmos right now from netflix(should be soon though). I pretty much use my TV apps for everything. It does Dolby vision and atmos from all sources that support it(Vudu, Netflix, amazon). The only things I use a shield for are my BD and UHD rips.

Can someone tell me why I should get the Shield when there are apps on the 2018 TV already

Depends. I want to play back my local library which includes Blu Ray and 4K movies along with HD Audio tracks. The shield handles these perfectly (using the Emby app), and since the Shield can actually handle these formats, there is no need for my server to transcode in order to play. Likewise, you can sideload apps which you can't do with TVs.

It all depends on your TV, the apps you run, and what you are looking to do. For some, like my parents, the Shield is way overkill and the apps on their Samsung TV provide them with all they care about; Netflix and Hulu. For me the Shield is nearly a perfect device (minus Dolby Vision unfortunately) that streams my movie collection stored on my home server perfectly, allows me to get my video game fix at almost PC levels, has every App I personally use, and allows me to cut the cord with HD Homerun. Putting a Shield on every TV in my home plus some HD Homerun devices with HD Antennas pays for itself (albeit after 2 years of so of not renting cable boxes). Again it really depends on what you would use it for.

Still no official DirecTV Now app. The sideloaded one I have needs an update, but I haven't been able to accomplish that.

I’ve had zero luck getting any sideloaded DIRECTV NOW apk’s working. I think they (DTV?) did something to squash it.

I've been putting the Shield and Apple TV through the paces, but I've been using the ATV most of the time. I tried the Shield again this weekend, but with DTVN not working I went back to Apple. The Shield is pretty much collecting dust. I like it, but I need for DTVN to work in order for it to be a contender.

For me ( I have the Sony x900E TV w/ the ATV interface), I still use the Shield TV because the CPU is much faster, the launcher doesn't have a bunch of useless unremoveable app icons, and the Sling app runs better without the picture blacking out at random times. If you're not going to use the Nvidia game controller, Plex server, or Google assistant features, then the TV should be fine without one.

Same here. DTVN, DV and color space issues are adding up against the Shield. Been a Shield user since almost the beginning but, it's getting behind.

I doubt Nvidia would pay to add Dolby Vision support to the Shield, but I would love if it did. I hate Apple, too (and their monkeying with audio is unforgivable).
IA friend has the new Z9F and its as fluid as the Shield.

ATT is is about to release an Android TV device to promote DirecTV Now

https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/dire...ed-the-osprey/

I would assume we will get a new official version of the app when that happens since ATTs device is Android TV. Worst case scenario if they block other devices we should be able to side load it. I would imagine they will support it well.

The ATV 4k doesn't do everything. There has never been a streamer that does everything. And the more things a streamer does the more compromises are made and you end up getting more mediocre apps.

All the SOny Android TVs have been woefully underpowered. I would be surprised if that changes with the F series of TVs. Plus once using a Shield TV and seeing how fast it is with Android, it's very difficult to go back to using Android TV from the Sony sets. Since they are laboriously slow when compared to the Shield TV.

You are doing what I did and are generalising. Look at my buddy's video of the interface.

Wow, I saw the video of the android interface in the Z9F owners thread. It's a night-and-day improvement from the unbearable Z9D. Happy that I was wrong. The Shield doesn't have Samba spyware, that makes it the clear winner for everything but DV content.

That video doesn't show me much. I need to see the boot up speed and the actual speed when launching an app and using it. Not the speed when moving around the menus.

How are those speeds? That is more important to me than moving around the menus. Moving around the menus is something I rarely do. The apps I use are always in the same spot and quickly accessible. It's the loading and actual usage of the app speeds that I would like to see.

If what you are looking for is correct resolution/frame rate/color space switching with atmos and dts:x passthrough with 4k HDR and below support in KODI, then the shield lacks the color space switching and it's a pain. It's also terrible at upscaling so let your TV do the upscale and send your 1080p videos at 1080p to your TV.

I ordered a minix U9-H and will install coreELEC on it. From my research it's should be hassle free for what I just mentioned above. It supposedly switches color space and does not convert BT709 to BT2020 so it's even better like that. I will see if it plays smoothly and correctly. Supposedly so. Vero 4K or Vero 4K+ is a similar box.

Of course if you also need netflix 4k hdr and amazon prime then the minix with coreELEC is not for you.

I won't let go of my shield though because it is the most powerful hardware android box out there. Who knows they might fix the color space switching one day although it's been so long I don't think they will.

I'm hoping the update fixes my issue with seeking in the YouTube app playing a jaring pop noise. Anyone aware of a fix for that if it doesn't?

No color or frame rate matching? What are they waiting for? If Apple would fix the low volume on streaming iTunes movies and complete lossless and Atmos support for MrMC on ATV4K I would be converting to Apple.

I am also in the same boat as you re: John Wick UHD Blu-ray redeeming in HDX on Vudu. If you have any luck contacting Lionsgate I would appreciate the contact info you used so I can try to work with them to get it fixed as well.

Also, and strange, I redeemed a code from the standard Blu-ray copy of Sicario through movieredeem.com a couple of days ago and got 4K in Vudu. Weird but welcomed! I did redeem differently this time though. I redeemed in iTunes first, even though I don't really use Apple stuff but I heard they upgrade to 4K, then I went to MoviesAnywhere and tried to redeem but got the error (expected) that Lionsgate is not a partner. The site actually told me to go to movieredeem.com AND provided a link to follow that had the code I just tried to used embedded in the link. Once I clicked on the link and went to the site I was asked what service I wanted to use so I picked Vudu. I was taken to Vudu's site which then told me I now own Sicario in UHD!

Sent from my LG V20 using Tapatalk

So I DID get it rectified via Lionsgate. Took them forever to respond, after I sent them images of my receipts/UPC codes and original codes, but they sent back new codes for all 3 movies I had issues with(John Wick 1/2 and Hacksaw Ridge) and after redeeming them via Vudu(against my better judgement), I now have access to UHD for all these movies.

As an FYI, I happened across this thread http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=298222 at blu-ray.com about where to redeem 4K and on post 3, there is a link to a spreadsheet showing the results of redeeming codes. On John Wick 1 and 2, there is a note that there are some 4K slips with only HD codes on them and to contact Lionsgate and they will give you a new code. This explains why my codes only offered me HD.

Nope. We had a bit of a discussion a little ways back about streaming 4K on the shield via Plex/Emby and Vudu came up and I happened to mention how a few of my UHD disks didn't show as UHD on Vudu.

I guess you won't be converting to Apple since they have zero reason to support lossless Atmos/DTS-X. They will do whatever it takes to get the most out of iTunes movie playback/lock-in.

Just install the latest modified (from the FireTV version) version here, then under app permissions, allow/enable location services, then launch/use.
