HLG is mainly a broadcast HDR format.

It Combines SDR and HDR into one signal, that can play on SDR TVs and HLG HDR compatible TVs. And takes up less bandwidth.

I wish we would start seeing some broadcast 4k & HDR from some of the networks over-the-air...

This is the first I have heard about Locast. They just added Philadelphia locals which is close enough for me. Fitsy with Locast is working great...thanks for the tip!

I have 3 TV's and only 1 of them actually gets used as a "TV".

I've always been a little "anti-TV" though - I like having one room in the house that's dedicated to that but I like having limits on screen time.

I have a Denon X2400H, Vivitek 2288, Nvidia Shield and Roku Ultra and when connecting my Shield directly to my Vivitek, there is serious video lag. When streaming in Netflix it freezes about every 2 seconds and stutters. This NEVER happens when connecting via my Denon.

My problem is HDR is not being passed from my Denon, so I am trying this as an alternative and the video lag makes 0 sense to me when its direct.

Your Denon should be able to Passthrough the HDR Signal. No video processing should be done from the AVR side.

So I tried to watch a disc rip of incredibles 2 and first time the screen was too tall. Quit the app. Try again no video. Reboot the shield no video.

Switch to kodi Xbox no problem.

It is set to bypass. It’s a night and day diff between using the avr and not. The Denon is doing something. I’ve tried many diff cables from shield to Denon and it’s all the same.

The Denon and Marantz interfaces are similar.

Picture Mode- Off

Within HDMI Setup I have:

HDMI Control - Off
ARC - on
HDMI Pass through - On
Passthrough Source- Last

Within Output Settings:

Video Mode - Auto
Video Conversion - Off

You have a newer Denon Model so I'm not familiar with the "4K Signal Format" section.

The vast majority of my videos are DVD and BF rips. I have a few that aren't anamorphic, so they end up pictureboxed, but I don't have any issues with overall aspect ratio. Are your videos being streamed from a DLNA server, or are they on storage attached to the Shield?

I'm assuming you've connected via SMB, not using a DLNA server to stream. Kodi 18 beta isn't seeing any of my SMB shares (SMB doesn't seem to be working at the moment), so I can't connect that way. I stream via DLNA, but I don't know if that makes a difference. My server is not processing the video at all (no transcoding), so in theory it should be the same as a locally connected media source. But with the SMB issues I can't suggest trying the beta.

Ok so my problem with kodi wasn't what I thought it was

I had shifted the image off the screen but vertical shift in kody krypton stretches the image whereas in Leia it does not.

I’ve tried all those settings and more. Everyone says you cannot have video mode to auto and it has to be bypass for hdr.

Anyway, I reset the shield and now connecting directly doesn’t stutter, but it also NEVER goes into HDR on my vivitek. Just moving the hdmi to my roku works perfectly. I really want to use the shield, but it’s appearing to be a crapshoot for hdr.

Does it stutter with everything when directly connected, or just with the lossless formats like DTS-HD, etc...? I finally gave up on those formats on the Shield as they cause video stuttering in Plex at least (sadly it worked until the last few weeks, I guess they helped me out with an update or something). Not every 2 seconds though, probably every minute or so.

I have a Denon X2200 and it works fine passing through HDR. Although it only works correctly if I turn off all video processing (purple screen otherwise). That bad thing about this is I lose the on screen overlay (like volume).

My two shields are still working fine with Plex. I watched a couple of movies this week and had zero issues with the Atmos track during each one. Both audio and video was rock solid the entire time.
