How did the AndroidTV team and the YTTV not put their heads together about integration at some point?

I believe this forced Nvidia to delay their update to the Shield because not all of the apps were compatible with the new interface, plus performance was also a factor. With my Nexus Player, I turned off all real-time video playback of compatible channels/apps because this would degrade the overall performance of the Player. On the Shield, those compatible channels, such as the Live Channels app, play back live TV with no problems.

This may be the case for Live Channels, but I'm not sure it really applies to Home Screen Channels in general which, by the vast majority, are only offering thumbnails and not live-video previews. It's true that the Netflix Home Screen Channel hasn't made it to the Nexus Player yet, but it's available on the Jetstream and the Mi Box S. Also, my Nexus Player doesn't seem to slow down when using video preview on the Pluto TV Home Screen channel, but that's the only Home Screen Channel I have that supports live preview.

I would be PERFECTLY content with a few YTTV Home Screen Channels with the same categories and static thumbnails that are already presented within the app.

Live Channels and Plex (those beta news Channels) are the only ones I can recall where you see a video feed. I hate that this has become a "regular thing" for Google/Developers not to take advantage of their products' potential by sharing the wealth with other devices and features.

No different than the almost disastrous Google Assistance divide between Mobile and Streaming devices. Finally we are seeing Google Assistant being used across both platforms without the need to configure to separate Assistants, but this should have been assembled from the beginning.

I plan to use emby for recording purposes, as it works well with the rest of my library. But I am not happy with the performance of live tv. Channels take long to tune and you can't skip backwards in time.

Basically I am hoping for WMC performance, which for me always acted as good or better than a rented DVR. I don't care about a bunch of features just solid live TV performance.

I'll try that out as well. Looks like live TV is available in without the dvr subscription but only 24 hour guide data? I guess that should be fine just for watching live. I will install it as well. Hopefully all these apps accessing the tuners don't start locking tuners unnecessarily.

So a week later and I am still getting the "not paired" message. Seriously, why buy one of these remotes when you can just get the Hub and a cheap Android phone and use it like a remote? It works so much better.

I suppose this wouldn't be an issue if the Shield TV had an IR receiver. Maybe I should try the Flirc again, or a USB receiver...

Hello,

I follow this thread but not to careful so I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or something changed. I am having a problem with Google play movies. I can not get HDR to kick in, even though movies are labeled that way. If I use VUDU it works fine but on Play movies it is not working.

I have two shields: One running on a LG B6 and going through a Marantz 7703 and a second Shield running on a JVC DLA-RS540 projector going through a Yamaha 5100. Both have the same problem. In the settings I have activated colorimetry in the developers settings and for some reason the Dynamic range settings is also greyed out in my settings also(not sure if this even matters) I have played around with the settings and cable to no avail and everything else AppleTV 4k, FireTV 4k and Oppo 203 is working fine.

Is it me or the app?

Are your AVRs configured for video passthrough, without any adjustments? I understand that it works with Vudu, but perhaps Google Play requires 4K/60 for HDR and maybe you're only providing 4K/30. Netflix works like that. If you only have a 4K/30 HDMI connection, you can't get HDR.

It's not you as Google Play HDR is only available on the Chromecast Ultra. It's been like this for over a year and Google hasn't seen fit to change it.

Coming in to this discussion late. One of the flavors of the Shield device is on sale at Newegg today for 149, regularly 179 I believe. Way helpful without a link I know.

I was going to inquire about BDMV folders and the Shield's handling of them. May I expect an Oppo-like experience?

Thank you!

Google Play HDR is available on some Sony Displays as well. The recent update for 2017 and above displays introduced HDR for Youtube and Google Play as a result of the VP9 Profile 2 Spec.

My only Sony XBR-43X800D is model year 2016 so I guess I won't be getting this update? Good to know that HDR is available somewhere other than on the Chromecast Ultra.

Looks as if the "E" models were updated. Did you receive the new Oreo Update, similar to the interface currently on the Shield?

Yes, I got the Oreo update. I checked a few 4k HDR titles on Youtube and Google Play and they're playing in HDR, great! It seems Sony is good about updating even the older models...

I have an Apple TV 4k and a Sony 55X930D HDR10 tv. I'm interested in buying the Nvidia Shield TV. I won't be using Kodi or Plex, just for streaming from Vudu, Netflix, and Youtube 4k. I would like to know on these items:
1. Is the 4k upscaling still subpar? I know that the ATV4k 4k upscaling is really good.
2. How does the Nvidia Shield's HDR10 picture quality compare to Apple TV 4k Dolby Vision to fake HDR10 conversion?
3. Is the audio quality output better from the shield than the ATV4k?
4. Is the colorspace issue fixed?
5. Does it have frame rate matching and dynamic range match like the ATV4k?

I can't compare with the ATV, as I don't have one. The Shield does not do YouTube HDR at this time. I just checked a couple of days ago and it's still not there. When I play some 4K HDR demo files that I downloaded, I though the HDR looked great. But I must mention that my Samsung is only a quasi-HDR set, not what Samsung labels as SUHD. A higher quality HDR set would likely look even better than mine. It does have frame rate matching, but I understand it is up to the app to trigger it. I use Kodi for my local content and it changes framerate without issue. The colorspace issue is still there, but the latest OS release has a beta fix that can be enabled, and reports are it works. Audio quality should not be an issue. Since the Shield can bitstream virtually any audio codec, it should be fine.

I recently bought a Nvidia Shield TV and I'm having an issue with the Plex addon for Kodi. The issue is that when I was watching a Blu-ray rip of one of my Blu-rays through the Plex addon in Kodi, about 2 minutes later the movie stopped played and a loading circle appeared on the screen for about 5 seconds and then a message appeared on the screen saying that the file could not be read fast enough to keep up with the video. I have Plex server installed in a PC with an i7-4930k and my Nvidia Shield TV and PC are hardwired to my LAN. The movie is on a WD Red 8TB hard drive. I never got this issue with the Plex addon for Kodi on my NUC i3-6100U. Does anyone know what is causing this issue about the file not being read fast enough and is there a way to fix it?

I'm planning to get an Nvidia shield pro. I have all my movies stored in my external 4TB hard drive.

Will it be possible to plug the usb hard drive and play the .mkv files on the Shield? What app should I use? I have 4K, 1080P, Dolby atmos and Dolby 7.1 movies.

Also, will it be possible to set it up in a way that I can just plug and play the movies. Example, I disconnect the external hard drive and then add movies and plug it back in the Shield without configuring anything on the Shield.

It'll bitstream the lossless Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD-MA audio track to your dedicated, certified AVR/separates for decoding, which (to my knowledge, as I don't own an ATV) the ATV doesn't. It's the primary reason why I got one of these back in late 2015... I came for the lossless audio, I stayed for the swiss-army-knife one-box-solution capabilities.

Depending on what TV brand you had it's been fixed for quite a while now.

But enabling Developer mode now allows you to toggle a Colorimetry setting that has the Shield switch back and forth from BT.709 output to BT.2020 output as a function of what kind of content it's trying to play.

It's on an app-by-app basis. It works for me in Plex, which is the app I use to watch most (priority) movies....

There are "folder navigating apps," like ES File Browser, that will simply let you navigate through files and folders on your external hard drive.

In my experience, ES File Browser works *considerably* better, for me at least, with a mouse and keypad... but it's not *required*. Also, there might be other/better alternatives at this point.

You'll be able to play your files with the built in "Video Player" (or whatever it's called), and you'll be able to install other third party players from the app store (like MX Player, Archos Player, VLC, etc) and when you navigate to the folder/file you want to play, you'll be able to pick which player you want to use.

I strongly prefer having my files permanently "networked" and accessed via a Front End software like Plex or Kodi, but to each their own.....

If I use PLEX app can my nvidia shield be my server and at the same time store the movies in the external hard drive connected to the USB of the nvidia shield?

What happens if I unplug, load some movies and then plug back the external hard drive? Will PLEX read the new movies automatically?

I believe so, yes. I use a Win10 desktop as my PMS, but I believe it should work.

I also think Kodi (or SPMC, a kodi-fork) would work the way I believe you're hoping....

I don't know. I could see that giving Plex a bit of a hardtime, but I don't know for sure. My (uneducated?) guess is that Kodi (or SPMC) might work better for that type of operation... my guess is Kodi will just scan your library when you startup the app, and as long as the files are there (connected via USB) and all the file paths/directories remain unchanged, Kodi won't care what you did in terms of disconnecting and reconnecting since the last time you used Kodi...

On a PC, Plex doesn't either. I can disconnect and reconnect a drive. And there are settings in Plex to tell it how and when you want to scan.

Can the PLEX Server run in the Shield Pro’s 500GB storage and I’ll just attach an external hard drive for my movies?

A higher quality HDR set would likely look even better than mine. It does have frame rate matching, but I understand it is up to the app to trigger it. I use Kodi for my local content and it changes framerate without issue. The colorspace issue is still there, but the latest OS release has a beta fix that can be enabled, and reports are it works. Audio quality should not be an issue. Since the Shield can bitstream virtually any audio codec, it should be fine.
Is this "Sync Playback to display"? I thought this prevents Lossless Audio output from your content.

You are correct, that disables lossless audio. No, there are settings within the player you decide to use (Plex, Kodi, MrMC, etc.) that allows selecting framerate matching. I don't believe there's a global setting in the Shield that enables it.

Yes it can, but 500GB doesn't go very far with 1080 or UHD movie storage. I have 20 TB of storage on my media server, and compared to some others users here mine's a wimp
