How is it going to DTS-HD unless there is a DTS-HD track with it? Otherwise it should be playing Dolby True HD.

On some occasions, the Oppo 203 will not change the audio format, therefore you have to manually adjust the audio setting, or restart the player. A minor inconvenience.

I released Refresh rate tool to google play, it allows automatic refresh rate switching and more.
Search for 'refresh rate' or 'mobi.bytearray.refreshrate' at google play

Thanks. I just had it downloaded to both of my Shields. I'll need to try it out when I get home tonight.

So how does it work? Do you use the app before watching any content on Shield?

It depends what you want do, you can set startup display mode for each app. Or you can enable automatic display mode matching. Or you can enable displaying toast message witch detected video fps and set display mode manually by osd menu.

Best is read manual at nvidia forums first (link in app description at google play)

I just tried it but is there any way to have an option less than five seconds? Like one or two seconds for it to change? From a normal device with framerate switching it switches in one or two seconds on my displays. But at five seconds a title starts playing then stops a few seconds later and goes to a black screen and then switches the framerate. If it happened within a second or two that would make it act more like other devices with framerate switching.

Mateusz (the developer) said that 5 seconds is the minimum over on the Nvidia forums. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce...l-google-play/

He said “It can be developed but minimal delay must be ~5 because system is reporting fps after first 120 frames from video start.“

I’m assuming that’s with 23.976 fps as the lowest video frame rate, it can take up to 5 seconds (or slightly more) to get to 120 frames and get an accurate, reliable result.

It’s almost impossible to use the Nvidia forums since the recent “refresh” and there’s no way to “number” or directly link to a post, otherwise I’d link to it. I think it was 3 days ago and is near the end of the thread.

Edit...I think I found how to copy a direct link to a post at Nvidias forums. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce...-play/2238130/

Also i can add to above information that in theory i CAN change mode without delay but it will be limited to full (rounded) fps values (24,25,30).
That is technical limitation, there is no exact data at video start. So i can add 'no delay' option but then you will get 23,97fps -> 24Hz, 29,97 -> 60Hz.

And one more thing, this app is 'hack', i connected multiple strange techniques to force this box to autorefresh rate, for some TVs or soundsystems this app will just not work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TaMaX - can you explain to me what your refresh app does for Shield TV? I was reading from the Nvidia forums a post of 'best practices' someone had linked earlier. In that post, it recommends using your refresh app. I never used it because I'm not sure what I'm missing I guess haha

Is there a link were I can do some reading and try to understand what it does? My UHD BD rips seem to play very well on my Shield but occasionally have a 'stutter' in the video. Is this what you are fixing with your app?

I've been posting about it here for a while. Since Nvidia's userforum is pretty much unusable now you can post here more often.

I installed 3.0 and a few things of note:

Automatic refresh rate switching doesn't work with HBO GO, it will error out. You have to change manually. Same sort-of goes for the new Hulu app, it will switch refresh rates, but it will pause playback every time it happens (which can get pretty annoying especially if you're running the ad-supported version).

Any chance of adding automatic resolution switching (to native refresh rate of source)? I assume that sort of information isn't included in the video so it's not possible?

For HBO GO (or HBO Now) you should be able to just set it to 23.976 and be done with it.

After installing the Refresh Rate app, my Shield was having video issues where it would go on and off every few seconds. I ended up uninstalling it.

Unfortunately not. HBO is a mix between 29.97 (30fps? I haven't quite figured it out) and 23.97. Shows like Bill Maher and John Oliver are the former rather than the later.

Those that are using the Shield for local UHD/HDR rips (assuming with Kodi) what display frequency and color/depth settings are you using?

I'm mostly new to HDR, and I thought 10-bit was the standard. I understand the latest update for the Shield broke the auto color space change. My understanding is that most UHD HDR content is 2020 anyway, so I have my shield set on there. However, the options do not show a 10-bit option. Only 8 bit and 12 bit. Am I missing something?

If I remember correctly, mine is set for 10bit 4:2:0 at 2160P60. Then in Plex, Kodi etc, when it switches to 2160P24, it switches to 12 bit 4:2:2.

Some dumb questions that have probably been answered somewhere in the last 370+ pages...
Does the Shield + Kodi (or any other app) play full uncompressed 4K UHD rips, with HDR? Either as ISO, folder structure, or mkv? Or is the OPPO 203/205 the only option?
Regarding ISO or folder structure, it's my current understanding that the full rip can't be processed into a main-movie-only due to no software is able to remux the streams correctly. Is that true or is my info out of date? I would prefer a main-movie-only folder structure but I also don't really care and will be happy to go with whatever works.
Regarding mkv, I understand mkv doesn't support DV, correct? Is there a way to convert DV to regular HDR?
Edit: And just like that, two posts before mine is someone playing full UHD rips with Shield and Kodi. Nice.

I've been doing that since I got my Shields last Spring. I can play my 1:1 UHD MKV rips with Atmos audio from Plex and Kodi etc.. And then I can play my 1:1 UHD BD ISOs with Kodi and probably MrMC.
The Shield has no problem playing Back the UHD BD rips in UHD/HDR10 with bitstreamed lossless Atmos/DTS:X audio.

The Oppo is the only option if you want DV and lossless audio. And it has to be in the folder format for that. There is a way to get DV with MKV but you will lose the lossless audio, plus you have to spend more time creating it. So I don't mess with that since I want the Lossless audio. So if I want the DV from my UHD BD, I will play the actual disc. If I want HDR10 from my UHD BDs, then I will either play the MKV I created using Plex or Kodi. Or I will play the UHD BD ISO I created with Kodi. (I create a UHD BD ISO and a UHD MKV from every UHD BD title I rip.) And MrMC should still work. But I haven't used it in awhile. Lately I've stuck with the native Plex app, Plex in the Kodi app, or just the Kodi app.
