I really need proper tone mapping, as in HDR to SDR conversion. I will gladly pay to upgrade if the spec bump allows for this. Unfortunately, I suspect that they will be running the same software versions across all SHIELD models which means that the new model won't get this until all models do.

They've indicated that they will eventually get around to this but that it is not a priority. I simply don't understand this. I'm sure there are many people in the boat with non HDR displays that would love watch 4K HDR content. Hell, I would pay for the upgraded model if it simply meant that I got this feature a couple of months early.

There's no reason to doubt it would still support bitstream audio right? I just find it odd that it advertised support for Dolby Digital Plus.

Ready to order when it goes live again. Hopefully the reported "AI upscaling" is a real improvement. With DV now supported I hope someone can soon figure out a straight forward way to rip local media and retain DV other than through a whole disc backup. I know you can sort of do it via DVDfab but right now it's limited to MP4 container which has audio restrictions so no perfect solution yet. But if does get sorted out this will truly be a perfect box for local media. Right now I use the Shield for most of my 4K HDR rips. However if it's a 1080p rip I'll often use Infuse (with Plex backend) on my ATV4k as they don't typically have Atmos and up-scaling is better. If I really want the DV version will stream whole disc back up through Oppo 203. Would be nice to do it all through Plex on Shield. Hopefully one day in near future.

The new remote looks like it'll be a lot better than the current one. Only thing I'm not sure on is the triangle design. Hopefully it feels good to hold and lays nicely. Being able to program the Netflix button would be nice too. I had having service specific buttons on remotes. Services come and go and it might not be for ones I use.

I think it's advertising DD+ Atmos because it has the decoder built in and licensed now for apps like Netflix to use. Bitstreaming doesn't need a license since the AVR is then doing the decoding and licensed for it.

I'll be interested to see what DV formats it handles too. It'll be really nice if it does dual layer but my gut says it'll be like the Apple TV and only do single layer since that's what needed for the streaming services. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'll most likely be picking one up too. My birthday is on the 3rd so if the amazon date is correct it'll make a nice bday present.

I don't think that's accurate. That's the reason it is felt that no Roku player will bitstream anything other than DD, DD+ and DTS, is because it requires a license. There's no other logical reason for not offering it.

I hope they fix the 1080 upscaling as that’s it’s weakest point right now. Happy to see Dolby vision support though!
Next I need to figure out how to control receiver volume with the remote via cec. Works fine with my atv remote but I have not yet gotten it working with the shield.

Yes, it seems to have one but it appears to be on the side by the shape but that just could be a due to the new design or the picture on the deleted Amazon page was not detailed.

From the description on the Newegg page: "Get the most 4K content of any streaming media player. Watch Netflix, Amazon Video, and Vudu in crisp 4K HDR, and YouTube, Hulu Live, Google Play Movies & TV, and more in 4K."

It sounds like it will still not support Youtube/Google Play HDR.

I don't know if Dolby Vision is enough to justify the cost to upgrade mine. Now, if they add VP9 Profile 2 and HLG support, I'll buy it on day 1. Those 3 additions are worth $200 to me.

Strange, the amazon info in the screenshot above says "all new design" but it shows it next to a TV and it sure looks the same to me.

Then this dongle comes around, I am curious if it is actually one device. I guess the larger one said "3 x usb" so unless that is on the side of the dongle then it has to be two different devices. I know canada get hosed but the pricing seems to be really close to one another.

I don't really care because it will be hidden away, but that dongle seems impractical with wires hanging out of both ends.

Think I better dump my Shield now, but I haven't seen bitstreaming mentioned. Would be crazy for them to take it away, but surely crazier things have happened.

Is there a source for this? Searching the only place I've found the claim is in the Roku forums which doesn't make sense to me. You're just passing the the bits along and not doing anything to them. It's doing the same thing my switch is doing that sits between my NAS and Shield.

I did find this statement from the MrMC dev that follows my understanding:
"For passthrough, you do not need a license. All you are doing is transporting bytes. The decoder (ie, amp/receiver) carries the license. Both DD and DTS will never say this in public but you do not need a license to transport bytes."

I have a spare one that I'll be selling. A guy at work had wanted it but hasn't had the funds. I had bought the remote only version and then decided I wanted the game controller. In typical me fashion I didn't get it sent back to Amazon within their return window.

I wish there was an upgrade or trade in program. My remote battery is long dead on my 2015 and I hate the old controller. Some money off for loyal customers would be a nice gesture.

DV is nice, HLG and VP9 would be better, and if I can get full speed Dolphin and Redream Emulation at 1080p or higher... extra nice.

For me DV and better upscaling are the best selling points. Leaving out VP9 for youtube HDR seems like a bad choice. With all the time they have had seems like they shouldn't be leaving anything out. But my TV supports it so not that big of a deal.

I am glad they listened and re-did the remote.

No, Roku won't comment about it at all, even after years of user requests. I agree it doesn't make sense, but no other theory makes sense either. What MrMC states is the way I would expect it to work. But then Roku does strange things.

The features of new Shield aren't anything that would make me replace my current Shield, other than the remote perhaps. But I have now replaced my 1080 plasma with a new Samsung 4K set, and while my Roku Ultra does an adequate job I would much prefer replacing it with a Shield for the Gigabit Ethernet and lossless audio bitstreaming. Plus the Shield supports whatever captions are in my media, while the Roku doesn't.

Ugly remote- I don’t use it anyways, I use a Harmony hub.

I have a 2015 and 2017 Shield, I’ll be selling one or both of mine for the upgrade. I’m sure someone on here would be willing to take one off my hands. I also have 3 controllers, depending upon what the new ones offer I’ll probably be selling those too.

I use mine mostly for gaming now. Disappointed there is no hdmi 2.1. I really hope they added vp9.2 support but I’m not expecting it. Should be eARC as well.
