Have you tried a different HDMI cable?

The advance sound settings should be set to Surround Sound > available formats > auto

Three different. Maybe there is something else i have to change to Denon.? If i play a blu ray from my Panasonic player everything plays fine from all speakers. Which player is the best for playing mkv stored in an external drive connected to the shield?

Although I don't have your AVR (mine is a Onkyo RZ840), I've successfully use Plex to play mkv file (my blu-ray rips) with ATMOS audio. Plex is configured (server side on my Win10 HTPC), with the web client having both direct play and direct stream checked. See: Settings->Web Client->Debug->(Direct Play / Direct Stream). I have a Shield 2019 tube. I'm also not sure if those Web Client settings effect the Shield's Plex app but I've also not had the problem you've described.

Performed yet another system reset of my Shield last night. I was having some "frame drop" issues with just about any video content played on the Shield. This started after the update from last week. It got really annoying after a couple of days and I thought it may have something to do with the refresh rate settings of the Shield. Going back and forth between 60 and 59.xxx did not fix the issue. Adjusting the refresh rate within Kodi and Plex did not fix the issue as well. When I noticed Youtube videos and OTA Channels were affected as well, then I knew something else was going on. So I decided to perform a system restore.

I got to hear the pretty music this time around when i was setting it up. Just your typical set up of peripherals and apps. Not only did this eliminate the frame dropping issue, but the installation of the Netflix Add-On for Kodi was much faster this time around. All of the plug-ins required for the Add-On installed properly, plus that long ESN was already configured. Just a few adjustments for 4K and HDR content, and I had this Add-On working within 5 minutes.

Now the only real challenge was the process of restoring content information for my Plex Media Server. I was notified that the external storage would not be erased, but when the Shield was finished with its Restore process, the SD card was not recognized by the system, so I just formatted. Not a big deal as it didn't take long to restore my content Metadata for Plex, but I will need to read more tutorials to overcome this.

I take it you hadn’t backed up your PMS database. Lesson learned. Just curious how your SD card was formatted.

The PMS data was backed up on the drive from the last conversation we had. I was able to see the contents you pointed out where the information would be stored. But after the Shield finished its restore process last night, the SD card could not be recognized.

After the "sluggishness" issues I had a few weeks ago, I restored my PMS data from my SD card back to the internal storage, then per your assistance, I moved the data back to the SD card and it worked much better.

One thing I did notice was there were two areas regarding the SD Card and how it should be used. The Shield's methods of using External Storage, and the PMS method of storing data. The Shield's process would require formatting the drive. The PMS method just needed to know how the external storage would be used. I did not format the drive the first time around, I just moved the data over to it. I also left the drive in the Shield considering the information on this card would not be wiped out.

Did you put the SD in your computer to see if all the data was still there? How was it formatted, ExFAT, FAT32, etc? I always zip and copy the com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb folder to another spot for backup.

I had the same problem with Netflix. Wont work due to error 2.10.0. I am still on the older 7.x build due to it just working.

NVidia apparently decided that 8.0.1+ was required for streaming, and thus I may now be forced to update to a possibly broken build (due to all the complains and listed limitations).

I might wait till next year for this update. I used my TVs Netflix app for finishing up on a series, and plan on doing Disney+ next year anyway.
Updated to the latest version, 8.0.1 release. So far no issues whatsoever. Netflix works again too. I was worried about the Kodi issues listed, like no passthrough, hdmi out of sync, etc.

Im glad I waited though.

Hi:
I hope someone here can help me with a quick question. I have the old 2017 Nividia shield TV and for some reason, which I think only after the 8.01 update, the Shield TV won't change the system resolution. Here is my set up:

Nvidia Shield (2017) to Marantz AV7022MkII preamp (passthrough) to Epson LS10500 projector.

It doesn't matter what resolution I choose for the Shield TV, it always outputs 2016P (4K) resolution to the Epson. It does switch the framerate correctly, such as 60hz, 24hz or 30hz, but just not the resolution. I have forced the resolution 1080P, 720P and it still outputs 2016P to the Epson. This is so annoying as I want my projector to do the 4K upscale, not the Shield to do the upscale, so I want it to be at 1080P for Netflix, etc.

Does anyone has the same problem and know how to fix it?
Thanks!

I can't recall how the drive was formatted but I did "zip and move" the data to my NAS. I completely forgot that I moved that information. Thanks for jogging my memory. I'll see if I can migrate this information back when I get home.

Did you change the resolution on the shield to be [email protected] on the device settings? That should have forced it. Are you upscaling to 4K on the AVR and thinking it’s the Shield?

Yes, I had changed the resolution on the shield to 1080P/60 1080p/24 720p/60 etc...All with the same result, the Shield is still output at 2016P (4K). It does change the frame rate correctly, according to the Epson info, but not the resolution.

No, I'm not upscaling to 4K on the Marantz preamp as HDMI is set to passthrough, there should not be any upscale from the Marantz; I'm very sure but will check again tonight.

Is anyone else having issues with Disney plus on shield?

Menu runs fine but no video. Force stop the app, restart the shield, wired or wireless, reinstall the app, sign out sign in, reboot router. None of that worked.

I was having the same issue with my OPTOMA UHD51A. I fixed it by setting the KODI GUI to 1080p 60hz.

So my SHIELD settings are as recommended (2160p at 59.-), the KODI global setting is 1080p at 60hz, I've whitelisted all available resolutions and refresh rates and have enabled refresh rate change on start/ stop..
With these settings, I have the same behavior add before the latest update. The shield outputs each file in its native resolution and refresh rate and my projector scales accordingly.

I wished I can do that as well! However, the Epson LS10500 can't process HDR in [email protected] as it only has 10G HDMI. So I have to set the shield at [email protected] to get HDR, then for some reasons, kodi won't change resolution just refresh. Something is broken with the Shield as I have a Odroid C2 with CoreElec and Kodi works fine with the Epson. However, the Odroid C2 can't process 4K HDR, so that why I'm stuck with the Shield. I might just get the Odroid N2, which can process 4K HDR and be done with the Shield.

Try setting the resolution for KODI's GUI to 1080p and whitelist all the resolutions you want.

be there, done that! It doesn't matter what resolution you set within Kodi or with the Shield; Shield will always output 4K to the Epson. Don't know why! I'm done with the Shield, nice and fast little box, but too many problems with their firmware.

I totally feel your frustration as I've been there myself so many times. Each time I rant about the limitations of the SHIELD, I'm brought back to earth when I search for alternatives.
Unfortunately, it is the best box out there for the money. All boxes have there limitations. Many of them have worse issues at a higher cost!

At any rate, the one you are reporting is not a limitation of the SHIELD. I and many others have their boxes set up with full resolution and refresh rate switching specifically in KODI as it is one of the only apps that takes advantage of the android API that allows for this.
As last resort, I might suggest removing your amp from the chain to ensure that it is truly passing through the SHIELD's output.

Kodi Resume Playback Issue

Unable to resume movie playback when using Kodi (18.5). Have to reboot shield to recover. Plex works fine to resume playback. Shield 2019 pro, Synology NAS movie storage. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I'll need to check mine. I know that playing the plex app inside Kodi remembers the location. But I dont play content directly through Kodi very often.

I have a Shield 2019 Pro, use a Synology NAS, and Kodi 18.5 allows for resume. I'm not sure why it's not working for you.

I picked up a nVidia Shield Pro today. I am using a LG 65C9 and Pioneer LX503 receiver. I installed Kodi on the Shield Pro. Watching a 4k movie I noticed a lot of banding in the blue skies. I still have my Windows PC running Kodi-DSPlayer with madVR connected to the same system and the same movie does not show any banding on the PC version.

Is there anything that can done to fix the banding?

I have not noticed any banding from mine. I am outputting the 422 colorspace at 36 bit for UHD/HDR content.
Are you outputting at 10bit with 420 or 12bit with 422?

I just tried two UHD MKV titles and two UHD BD ISO titles from my unRAIDs.
Using the Kodi interface to play them back.
Both my 2017 Shield and 2019 Shield Pro remembered the locations when I came back to play all of them.

But I also did not have the SHields go into standby at any time. The Shields were on the entire time.

Thanks taz and Aaron. I'm considering starting over from scratch -drop my Library, re-install Kodi. Maybe trying a previous version of Kodi. I could drop Kodi altogether and use Plex, but I kinda' like Kodi interface a little more. But I thank you for your support.

It may just have something to do with the cache. I'd try simply doing a library cleaning first. It's in the options somewhere.
