Question for all of you that have the new model. Since the only old versions I can find for sale are used on EBay, I don't figure I can find one.
When playing videos from your local DLNA server, what are you using for a client? I am aware of Plex, and do have Plex server running on my media server. However, Plex has one major limitation for my use in that it will not automatically play the next video in the list. It also doesn't support my .pls playlist files. I do understand that Plex on the Shield will passthough HD audio.
I am looking for the ability to playvideos from my Serviio DLNA server, with full HD audio where available. Virtually all of my media is either mpeg2 or h.264, although there are a few VC-1 or wmv files, but I could always convert them if necessary. Almost all audio is AC-3, with some TrueHD or DTS-MA files on my Blu Ray rips. Containers are mostly MKV, with some m2ts, ts, and avi. I have a bunch of wtv recorded TV as well, but transcoding them to a different container doesn't take much server power, so I'm not concerned with them.
I understand the Shield comes with a native DLNA media player, but I can't find any information about it. Does it support continuous playback? Playlist support isn't a problem, as that is handled by Serviio. Does it display metadata and cover art? Both are contained in the Serviio database, but not all players provide the information.
I'm looking to swap out my Roku Ultra with a Shield if it will do what I need. I'll put the Ultra on a 1080 set, so the HDCP issues that some are experienceing won't ever be an issue for me, and I'll use my 4 for travel instead of the Stick. If Roku only handled MPEG2, I would be in great shape, but they don't.
