Let's go into the details now ...
1 . SETUP Menu
A. GENERAL tab
screenshots are from my "test" yadis, all paths and files you will see are 100% fake, do not take it as an example ...
Language and interface selection.
When selecting the language (FR here) to use in yadis you make it so it's used not only for the software interface but also for the recovery of all the data on the web (tmdb/tvdb), it allows having the syno / titles / etc in the selected language (if it's available on TVDB / TMDb of course ... if it isn't available in general it is English that will be used, or the only language available if there's only one) .
Profile : yadis is mainly done for Dune players, but also allows for export to Mede8er and Tivx . This tutorial is primarily dedicated to the Dunes, so I will not speak about other players (because i don't know it...).
" Basic Mode " : it deserves explanation because some tend to check this option without really knowing what it is... The Basic mode is a "basic browsing" mode, it's a mini yadis that will simply add to every movie/tv shows folder a jpg file that corresponds to the yadis backdrop preview (the one you can see in the main window) + a dune_folder.txt to launch the movie from this backdrop. In this mode NO MENU is created (except a mini-menu for TV shows), the idea is that you must use the basic navigation of the dune ( "windows explorer" style ) to browse your folders where your files are, yadis is doing the bare minimum and displays a nice visual when you go into the folder and launch the file when you click play... NOTE : this mode makes it mandatory to use 1 file = 1 folder, and all TV episodes from a show MUST be in the same folder (no episode from one show spread across various locations)
Workspace : the famous " workspace " ... Consider the workspace like the real database of yadis . This is where ALL the data from your movies / series are preserved as well as all the manual changes you could have done. You can change where its location, the default location keeps it in yadis' installation folder (the one you chose during installation). I personally suggest to leave it there and NEVER make any modification ( unless you know what you are doing and you are doing it at your own risks). The workspace is a key element of yadis and you can back it up regularly to save your work from a PC crash or else.
Dune interface location (note that in Basic mode this line does not exist) : This is where you export your collection to a format that can be read by the dune. This location must be accessible from your dune, whether it's a local disk (internal or USB attached to the dune) or network location does not matter , as long as the dune can access it.
Automatically add ... : option to add all the new movies in a given selection , for example add it to an " unseen " Selection. If checked a small window appears on the right to choose this Selection. More information about the Selections in part 2/Process
Ignore articles for the sort of movies : allows yadis to remove automatically articles (the, die, el...) from the beginning of the movie name and use it as sorting title. For example, " the history of Toto" will automatically be considered to be classified in H (" history of Toto , the ") instead of T. By checking this box , a window opens to the right to allow you to manually determine the articles you do not want to be taken into account. NOTE : sorting title doesn't change the real movie name, so "The history of Toto" will still be displayed like that in the movie backdrop, even if sorted under the H letter.
Movie database : either TMDB (free), or CinéPassion for french people who have a subscription to this scraper. If you use yadis in english you can chose certification between US or UK ratings (all other languages are using their own local certifications)
B. FOLDERS tab
This is the MOST IMPORTANT
tab and also the most complicated. Normally you only need to do this once , unless you add some new folders to scan later in which case you will just need to re-do the same process as described below.
As you can see this is where we will add the folders containinge th files to scan and the "dune path" which is what will allow your dune to play the files. This path is nothing more but the path to your files but "translated" into the language Dune .
Type: to be selected according to the material, depending if it's a folder containing movies, or it's a folder with TV shows. NOTE : remember, no movies/tv shows mixed in the same folder !
Folders: this is where you select the folder to be scanned. Rule N°1 : if it's a network drive NEVER USE DISC MAPPING ( with a standard x :/ letter created using "add a network drive " in windows), always use UNC path to add network folders (through "Network " at the bottom left of the explorer window that will open when you will have to point to the folder to scan ). In doing so, you should have high chances that yadis will automatically create a proper SMB Dune path without your intervention. However, even if the automation gives good results in most cases in SMB, it's necessary to verify that the path is correct. For the automation to work correctly for an external hard disk, you need will need to name the disk and don't leave it's name empty. NOTE : NFS path are done 100% manually
This is where it all happens. If the automatic creation worked , great. Otherwise you'll have to do it manually. [i] WARNING: what's indicated in this scrolling window ARE ONLY EXAMPLES, just clicking on one of those lines will not work, it is imperative to fill the address manually if the automatic path generation didn't work ... [/ i]
Depending on the source folder, Yadis use one of these three types of Dune path : " smb ", " storage_uuid " or " storage_label ".
is used when the source file is on a network location (NAS, PC , ... ) . The path will be in this format: "smb://user: [email protected]
/share/path" . The parameters "user" and "password" are optional. You will have to modify the path manually if a user name and password are required to establish the network connection. "host" is the IP address (preferably used instead of the host name) and "share" the network share name . "path" is optional and corresponds to a path to the folder in the network share.
is used when the source folder is on a hard drive (internal or USB ) connected to the Dune when using Yadis . The path will be in this format: "storage_uuid://uuid/path". "uuid" is the unique identifier of the hard disk (long random string of figures and letters), it is visible by clicking on popup menu / information on your dune remote when the disk icon (in dune Sources tab) is selected. "path" is optional and corresponds to a folder on the disc.
is used when the source folder is on a hard drive connected directly to the computer running Yadis and will be connected after to the Dune, it can also be used instead of storage_UUID (much more convenient than typing by hand a random sequence of 25 letters and numbers ...). The path will be in this format: "storage_label://label/path". "label" is the name of the hard disk AS VISIBLE IN WINDOWS (if you have a doubt, on your PC right click on the drive, then properties, the real name of the disc appears on the first line of the General tab to the right side after the disk icon). "path" is optional and corresponds to a folder on the disc. NOTE: for those who have a Dune local disk (internal or USB) and used Zappiti or MyMovies before yadis, BE SURE TO CHECK if at the root of your hard you have a dune_folder.txt file, with inside a single line "storage_name = XXXX" . If you have it, delete the file , or use as "label" XXXX EVEN IF IT'S DIFFERENT FROM THE DISC REAL NAME you have in Windows. I personally recommend the deletion as a radical and easy solution...
: in theory has little interest compared to SMB. In practice it may solve some network problems in specific cases. To be tested if necessary. Each brand of NAS uses a syntax of its own. When in doubt post back on the forum for a little help ...
Here are some case studies to determine the way to have a correct Dune path :
The source folder is on a NAS or PC shared folder
Folder set up in Yadis : \\DS409\Movies
Dune Path : smb://192.168.0.1/Movies (preferably using the IP instead of the name " DS409 " and add a user name and password, in front of the IP, if required)
The source file is on the internal drive or on a USB drive in the Dune
Folder set up in Yadis : \\DUNE\DuneHDD_87fabad0_3181_4878_b102_4a47e7f9626 0\Movies
2 possibilities for the dune path :
storage_label://DuneHDD/Movies (check if this is the disk name as it appears in windows + check if there is not a dune_folder.txt at the root of the disk )
The source folder is on an external drive connected to the PC running Yadis and will then be reconnected to the Dune after
Folder set up in Yadis : D:\ Movies
Dune path : storage_label://MyBook/Films ( " MyBook " is the name of the disk D:\ as seen in Windows)
C. INTERFACE tab
The template influences the look of the interface. Yadis offers two themes out-of-the-box : Origins and GLASS Revisited. Other templates have been created by Yadis users and a topic is available (sticky) on the yadis section in the MPCC forum.
Double-click on the image and you can view a full-screen preview of the theme . NOTE: To apply a new template you will have to select all your movies / series and hit "process" (or " Process all episodes " for a TV show) don't worry it goes very fast, once done just start an Export so the dune interface can be build with the new template.
You can find most of the templates in this topic https://www.avsforum.com/forum/39-networking-media-servers-content-streaming/1443252-yadis-templates-dune-hdi-players-emergency-backup-thread.html
or from this website created by johnblanker http://dunejukebox.com/yadis/templates/
These are some interface display options.
"Using cases for movies " allows the use of boxe-art to display movies. Several types of box-art are available : Blu -ray, 3D Blu-ray , DVD , MKV, ... If this option is not checked , the appearance of the covers is defined by the theme used (often in the form of a poster). By default, this option is not enabled. NOTE : depending on the template you are using, you might avoid to use box-art or it will look weird simply because it wasn't planned to be used by the template author
"Display the selection frame " allows you to choose if the selection frame is displayed or not around the covers, banners and other selectable elements in the interface. This option is enabled by default.
" Display the scroll bar " controls whether a scrollbar is displayed (right side) when the number of items displayed is higher than what can fit on the screen. This option is enabled by default.
Synopsis format :
Select the file format used for synopsis (background in reality). The AAI format, natively supported by dune players, provides a better picture (theoretically) and a faster display. But this format uses a lot of disk space and slows down the export process. JPG format takes much less disk space and gives shorter time to export. The difference in quality between the two formats is minimal IMO. You should use JPG especially if your collection of movies and series is relatively big. The JPG quality is 90 %, I suggest you keep it that way. This option only impacts movies, not TV series that are necessarily generated using AAI (and therefore can take up much space following the template used).
Selections : Here you can check the Selections that will appear in the "Movies" menu of yadis on your dune. More details about Selections in 2/Process.
Recently added : yadis offers a special menu for movies recently added. Here you can configure the time span (last 60 days by default) and sorting to apply (alphabetically or by date). The date taken into account is when you scanned and processed the file.
Categories: categories you can choose to display or not in the yadis movie menu (second row). See by yourself what interests you most...
Shortcuts in Main menu : this option is very interesting and rarely used (I think). It allows you to add directly in the yadis menu (first row, same level as Movies and TV Series) new entries freely chosen by the user. There may be different types : a Selection (see below for explanation), a specific genre (eg. access to all SF movies) or location (directly open the selected location in the dune UI, for example a photo folder ...). You can scroll the menu below to select the Genre/Selection amongst existing ones, or a location (you will need to manually create it). Click Add and what you have selected will appear in the left panel. You can select the order in the menu by drag&drop with your mouse over the selected shortcut ( right -click on a line and then pull up / down to rearrange the order) NOTE 1 . To remove a shortcut, select it and then simply press Delete on your keyboard ... NOTE 2 : a movie in a shortcut (or Selection) ALWAYS appears in the other filters of yadis (year, genres...) , it's just a shortcut, not a complete reorganization of the menus and your collection.
D. REMOTE tab (last on the right) :
I absolutely don't know what it's used for...
