I have Synology NAS now (using with Dune Solo and Prime), but thinking of simplifying it and not have the NAS running 6-8 hrs a day. Would it work buy a Mobius 5-bay or a Mediasonic 4-bay and stick 10TB HDs in it to give it a total of 40-50TBs plugged into the USB3.0 of the Solo??

Damn, That's a lot of storage.
Congratulations!

Yes it would work.
With these other raid enclosures using JBOD only thing I would worry about is how will you monitor the health of the drives?
I work in the IT field and NEVER trust hardware monitoring without a user interface.

However if you are not concerned about data safety then that is not a concern.

I use and recommend this:
https://www.startech.com/HDD/Docking...tion~SDOCK4U33

Each bay has separate power and controllers so they can be turned on and off without interrupting other drives. So you only need to power the drive you're using. Variable speed cooling fans too.
Not sure about 10TB drive support but I read about one person using 4 x 6TB.

I would just keep the the nas and manually switch It on everytime or schedule it.

The dock is ok, but you wont have data redundancies if a drive fails you will loose your data and you will not be able to host the media files to the whole network internally or outside on mobiles devices.

I use the dunes for home media playback but plex server running on nas for media playback outside the house.

Also you need to disconnect or every time when going to two different players (solo and prime) or any other media devices.

Unless Dune has a feature I'm not aware of, you'll lose drive failure alerts with one of those devices. 10TB failures aren't chump change.

What are you trying to simplify?

Looky here!

I was going to ask the same question of the OP - I think I've had to manually intervene only twice on my Synology NAS in the 6 years I've had it!

I don't understand your question. Why is the concern 6-8 hours vs 24 hours? This implies you already turn the synology on and off for movie watching.

If this is because you use daily scheduled power on and power off, (which occurs even when you're not around watching a movie) you could, (if you use some type of supporting remote control system), use Wake on LAN.

The Synology supports this, so mine is off until I start my Watch Dune activity... the array is ready in less then a minute. For shutdown, that is scheduled at 1:30 am nightly.

Even an iOS network scanner, like Fing, supports sending WoL packets to a device on the network.

I'm doing it similar.
I let my Synology daily switch off around 1 o'clock AM, and let it switch on at 5:30 PM, when not much later I come home from working.
But I also have activated WOL, so on the weekend, it switches on, when I start the Dune.
For me this is a very good solution.

Is it possible to have the Dune Solo stay powered off after a black-out when power returns? It always powers on now.

How do each of you send a WOL packet to the SYNOLOGY with the Harmony, or when starting the DUNE? I have a Synology DS1815+. Thanks in advance.

Anyone tested the New Dune HD Solo 4K Base model? is the HDR works flawlessly and how does it compare to the Oppo 203 and the best 4K player- Panasonic UB900?

Geronimo, I have to correct me.
Last weekend I switched to WOL and next weekend I hope, that it would work.
During the week I do not need this option, because the NAS already started, when I am at home.

Hi Geronimo

It’s been ages since I looked at Harmony, but I presume there is a network interface that will send commands via IP and not just IR...

When I used Roomie, there was no specific Synology device, so I found and added an old Pioneer Blu Ray player which had the WoL command, and set the device IP and port for the “Pioneer” to point to the Synology, placed the command in my Dune activity macro, and that was it.

With RTI, they happen to have a Synology device driver that has the WoL command, so I’ve configured and used that now that I’ve moved on from Roomie/Simple.

You’d want to check on Synology forums for more detailed information and to make sure your model supports WoL, though I’m sure it does.

This is how Dune designed it. Also to allow auto-play feature. It is not optimal for many users. Dune suggest to use sleep timer. Even if unit will go on after power cycle, it will go standby for example in one hour.

Maybe at IFA at the end of the week something might show up as Sigma does have a booth but they have usually announced media player chipsets at IBC at the end of September. I would not hold my breathe as it seems they are more focused on tv chipsets and zwave stuff. With all the cheap arm based players I think Sigma knows the market is just to small now. I doubt the Board would let them dump a ton of money into R&D on a new chip with such small gains.

Yes, it match what I also managed to find out.
And Dune was testing that chipset time ago. But something was wrong. I do not know what. Maybe quality, maybe licenses, maybe performance, maybe stability of SDK. So the chipset was not ready to us for a new player. And Sigma has not provided new revision, as I know. Dune will be probably forced to consider other chipsets.

- Put the unit into hardware standby (full power-off) mode.
- Carefully direct the RC onto the IR eye.
- Carefully press the following sequence of RC buttons:
P, O, W, E, R, 1, ENTER
- The unit should LED-blink once. If the unit does not blink, try again
several times. If it does not work, it means the unit has an old version
of the MCU firmware and auto-power-on mode is not supported by the unit.
- To disable auto-power-on: the same, but press:
P, O, W, E, R, 0, ENTER
it works.
P, O, W, E, R, 0, ENTER = 7, 6, 9, 3, 7, 0 ENTER

1) Your system is still using full HD, no HDR, no HDMI 2.0
2) (1) and you didn't buy the previous Solo or Lite
3) (1), (2) and you still prefer Sigma PQ with full bd menu
4) (1),(2),(3) and you don't need Android

I already have the Solo 4K (I don't have 4K HDR system yet) so I'll skip this one unless I want another full bd menu player. Besides the 2 antennas, anything else differentiating this player with the solo 4K?

NFS for Windows 10

Can anyone recommend a good (and perhaps free) NFS software program, beside Allegro NFS, to connect via NFS to a Windows 10 Home edition folder? What are you guys using that is reliable and hopefully easy to set up? Thanks!

Yes, that's what I use to. Very reliable. If my memory serves me right, you can try it free for a month.
One heads up: I remember to have to manually configure Windows firewall for the TCP and UDP ports to get it to work.
Should you not know how to do that, there is an easy step-by-step guide.

Hello,

I have a question and currently no solution came up. I noticed this thread has a lot of people with knowledge about the Dune HD Solo 4K mediacenter .

I have some files (movies) as .mp4-file but my Dune just gives a black screen when I try to open them... At the box it states that it can play MP4-files, and I would be surprised that it can't play MP4-files.

Hope you guys can help me out. Thank you already for your time!

MP4 is what you call a so-called media-container. Within a media-container there can be lots of different video, audio, subs, tags, etc. etc.

Next to the capability of knowing a container format, the player must also be capable of knowing how to play the different mediastreams it contains. And there lies the issue. First of all, there are kazillion types of how audio and video are encoded (to stay with these two for now), the so-called used "codecs". Also criterea as resolution (this goes for audio and video btw, mind you), used color space, sample-frequency, framerates, bit depth, GOP settings come into play. The list goes on and on for that matter...

What you can do with a mediafile is open it with MediaInfo (Google for it). It's a free tool that tells you in what container and contents a file is made up with. You'll see, if you check your findings with the specs of your player, why certain audio/video can't be played - even in a container that is supported.

Hope this helps a bit. If you can't figure it out, post the MediaInfo date here maybe I can tell.

Often it has something to do with DIVX and XVID.
One of them cannot be played. Then you have to convert or change the header of the video file.
