I keep less than 40 installed and have seen this happen once or twice.

For this purpose 1GB is probably overkill.

I did some digging and it looks like unless the Roku is used for gaming, or a lot of channels is present the SD card isn't required. So while it's not required, I went ahead and left the cards in the Roku units because while it's not hurting anything it will be there if my storage gets to the point having one around will help. As it is though, doesn't seem to make a difference with or without currently.

If you read reviews for the latest Roku units on Amazon you will see there are a lot of complaints and more Especially since the latest firmware.

The general theme I see is people wanting to try the new models then going back to a Roku 2 or 3, that's stable, or they ditch Roku all together.

I have owned almost every version of roku since it begin and didnt have any issue until the Roku 4. My Roku 4 had a color issue but was later ok after some software updates. Ultra has always been buggy in some way. Hopefully they will fix it soon.

Cable is not the culprit. Tried 3 different brands, Monoprice premium certified, Mediabridge certified 18 GZ and the venerable Jeans Cable also certified. Result is the same, HDCP problems from time to time, flashing black screen .

I was so happy without HDR...

In my setup the Ultra is extremely stable. I never need to reboot. It just keeps running and running with no issues. It's the best Roku I'VE owned over the last five or six years.

I wish mine was. I could have dealt with the occasional audio chirps but HDR issues that came about all of the sudden suck. I didnt change anything in my setup and the issue arose.

Do you have your stuff direct connected to the a tv or through a receiver?

I was at Costco a while ago and saw the $20 off for the Premiere Plus and picked it up. I haven't opened it up yet - should I even try? I do not have a 4K + HDR setup yet. I am a Cordcutter with Sling + NetFlix + Amazon and I use an indoor Antenna for OTA stuff. I have 2 setups.

1. Downstairs - 46" Sony TV, 1080P, 10+ years old, currently with a Roku 3. Waiting on the 2017 OLED prices to come down a bit before switching to 4K (around Thanksgiving time).
2. Upstairs - This is what I am building up on. Benq W1070 on a 120" Silver Ticket screen. I am new to projectors and I just bought the entry level to try out - if a reasonably priced projector (~$3k range) comes along that can deliver 4K (& HDR), I'll buy one to replace the Benq. I do NOT have a TV source for the projector yet.

I bought the Roku as a source for the upstairs projector. Should I return this? Looks like the premiere plus is plagued with problems .... I just need a streamer that can let me access Sling, Netflix, Vudu, Google Play, & Amazon ...

Yes. I connect directly to my TV and use the ARC for audio. If / when I get an HDMI 2.0a speaker bar for that setup, then I can stop using the ARC and go directly to the speaker bar.

I would try it out and see if you have any issues. May not if you are running it in 1080p.

Most of the problems will likely be fixed in a future firmware update so hopefully it will just be short term issues.

And my Ultra is connected through a Yamaha AVR, so it's not specific to the type of configuration. I know it has Roku frustrated, but I am also certain that they are working hard on a solution. It is extremely difficult to trouble-shoot a problem that doesn't always show up.

I have mine going through a pioneer.

Im sure they will get it working again.

I do like the roku brand regardless so im just chalking this up to being an early tech adopter.

Since you just want 1080p you should be fine. HDR is the biggest problem for some people, though a smaller number have problems with simple 4K as well. The issues are not universal and will probably be addressed via automatic firmware updates. If it doesn't work for you just return it to Costco.

Just thought I would mention that when at walmart today I purchased a copy of Planet earth 2 on 4k UHD blu-ray with HDR So far it's looking and sounding great via the Xbox one S I think if there would be one reason i upgraded to HDR and 4k, it would be for nature stuff, nothing else really matters I don't think anything else could really show the difference

that's what I have Found as well And I'm Not buying anymore Cables.
I find when i'm having an Issue i change from, 4:2:2 to 4:2:0 and then Back to 4:2:2
i'm not sure what that does, but In my mind it seems to establish a new hand shake. then all is well.
most of my issues have come right after a wake up whether from sleep or screen saver or after watching cable. but once I get it Stable it stays that way. Let's Hope Roku can find the problem.

I've been watching the Planet Earth II series I picked up this morning on 4K HDR blu-ray without issues and I've probably watched 2 hours worth. I think if I was going to pick something to dedicate the Roku to at this point would be Youtube, or Vudu, none of the other 4k or HDR content looks as nice. I am hoping as well for a firmware fix as well, though.

I think this morning watching that new Series on 4k disc is the first time I've actually really appreciated the new TV as far as the new video formats are concerned.

Had 2 Premieres with issues since Christmas and Feb 15th. Took one back. One to go. Don't need ultra because I'm have profound hearing loss. But I love my Rokus that work properly and want to watch HOC in HDR.

just curious what does the ultra have to do with hearing loss??
House of Cards as far as i Know it doesn't have HDR unless this new upcoming season does.

The main differences between the ultra and Premiere is in audio:

https://image.roku.com/ww/docs/compa...ucts-en-us.pdf

Once again, my MBR tv does 4K but NOT HDR. I want to watch HOC in 4K. Thinking of giving the Fire HD a try. Had to get up at 2am this morning to reset my remaining Roku Premiere Plus as it was stuck-remote would not do anything. Once reset, it was OK. Happens all the time along with other bugs such as not showing 4K on 4K programs.

The Ultra has both Optical and HDMI and the Premium Plus just has HDMI but they both are capable of the same audio decoding.

Just thought I would post the ability to roll back firmware to 7.5.1 seems to be gone now. When I tried a couple days ago to troubleshoot something, the only option was to reinstall the current firmware version. Look like we're stuck until Roku issues another update.

Not quite. The Ultra will convert DD+ to standard DD. But that's the only other difference.

Not true. The Ultra is the only Roku (ever) to be able to convert DD+ to basic DD (conversion, not transcoding--it never decodes it). It can do that for transmission over either optical or HDMI.

Other than the optical port and DD+ conversion, the Ultra has a USB connection for storage devices which Premiere+ lacks.

Not True
they both have a MicroSD for Storage.
the Premium Plus has a microSD card slot for additional channel storage and the Ultra has a microSD card slot for additional channel storage and a USB port for local playback

thanks for the clarification

What part of what you quoted ("Other than the optical port and DD+ conversion, the Ultra has a USB connection for storage devices which Premiere+ lacks") is not true? DD+ conversion, optical S/PDIF port and USB connection are the differences between Ultra and Premiere+.

I'm under the Assumption that the MicroSD card is for Storage and the USB port is for local playback.

Does anyone here subscribe to the Walter Presents channel on Roku? If so, can you access the channel? When I attempt to open the channel on my Ultra (or my Roku 4), I get an error message stating that the SSL certificate is not yet valid. The only thing I can do from there is exit out. It has been like this since Saturday. Roku support does not respond to requests for assistance.

When it comes to USB on the Roku, I have found it's not worth it It seems to be very p8icky compared to other devices what will, and will not play. I did some tests a while back comparing the Roku USB port and the USB ports on the TV, and android can play a lot more media types in my case then the Roku can. Even with the right extension and file types, I was only able to play one of the HD files I had downloaded from the Kodi samples page, and a wmv file i copied from windows as a test.
