This may not be an analogous case, but when I was using my Premier + via HDMI to my UHD TV and optical to my pre-HDMI DD+DTS receiver I could only ever get stereo because the TV was acting as a stereo receiver - probably because it expects to downmix to its own speakers - and sending that downmix over PCM, DD or whatever multi-channel capable signal.

I only noticed when I added a center channel to my stereo and could not get any sound from it.

My TV outputs dd 5.1 no problem with any other source. Just the ultra that is down mixed to 2.0 for some reason

Software update 8.1.0 build 4145 was just installed on my 2017 Ultra, and 2016 Premiere+ fingers crossed Roku fixed the strange HDMI activity bugs.
Result: FIXED: build 4145 fixed HDMI activity issues regarding sleep. Tested with Premiere+ on switched setup changing the switch to a different device, and back to Roku and Roku stayed in stand by powered off TV and back on with Roku as active device and Roku stayed in standby.

Keep fingers crossed going to turn off the networking features on 4k TV and see if it's fixed there as well.

UPDATE: 4K setup seems to work as expected now as well, even without the network settings enabled to keep the TV active.

@mattg3 : maybe you can confirm since you also had sleep issues with the Roku and your setup. Also, the Roku shouldn't automatically wake up once the update is applied simply with a TV power on.

I just installed 4145 and nothing seems broken. I'll check for fish later. Thanks for the information.

Fish came back.

Not much to say in that my Roku 3 was waking up every time I turned on my tv .I changed the screensaver to 1 minute and it did it up until last week and now the roku does not turn on unless I choose to use it and goes off a minute after im done.My Roku Premiere + was fixed from doing the same thing right after I changed the screen saver to 1 minute. Since my Roku both upgrade and install new firmware automatically thats probably what happen last week. All is well now for both of them.

@mattg3 : The Roku 3, was exactly where I heard 4145 fixed the issue over on Roku's forums. So, I waited for it to roll out to my devices, which it did yesterday evening. As of this morning, all behavior seems normal, the light is off on both, and they only wake up when a remote button is pressed.

For now, looks like my main concerns with Roku have been addressed. Now waiting to hear back from someone from Plex, on why Roku 's Plex channel is the only thing on my network that has issues playing my movies from Blu-ray MKV files.

The update 4145 corrected the on/off problem and (Amazon) Prime is passing correct audio.

Better solution than Roku telling me to unplug the Ultra to turn the light off.

Roku rolls their updates out in cycles. And no one but some DB admins at Roku have any clue when it will happen. It might be days or weeks before all devices are updated. Maddening...

Roku Ultra With DirectvNow = SLOW

Was wondering if anyone else has an issue with their Roku Ultra or any Roku and using DirectvNow being slow when you choose a channel to watch. On mine, it takes like 5-6 seconds. Scroller bar moves, and after 5-6 seconds the program starts.

When I'm using my Apple TV 4k, going to a channel from the guide takes less than 2 seconds.

Just curious

Has anyone heard of any new of new models coming from Roku this fall? The one Ultra my Walmart has, as well as the streaming sticks, are still selling at full price, I checked today while I was there. I remember, when the 2017 models came out (right before) that prices on existing models had gone down.
Since they haven't yet, does this mean no refresh this year ?

I don't see how Roku can make their products any less expensive that the 2017 models. I doubt Roku will ever make a highend model with Dolby Vision but we can hope. Remember they cut DD+ transcoding with the cheaper 2017 Ultra.

Roku all about the ad revenue now.....not the high end (or even mid-tier) experience. Even though at this point I think DV is penetrating further into the mainstream more than ever....I still don't see Roku caring to come out with something to support it. Not even sure their devs could handle it either

@naustin : I was thinking more along the lines of upgrading the Ethernet port in the Ultra to gigabit. I seriously doubt that would add any cost to the device. Gigabit ethernet is standard now. The HDR formats such as HDR10 vs Dolby I'll care more about in a couple years when it doesn't feel like such a roller coaster ride, and a big mix and match.

I was thinking after I wrote that Ethernet speeds seem to be a roller coaster too.

My 4th Generation Apple TV (2015) is 10/100
My 4k Apple TV (2017) has 10/100/1000
my iMac late 2015 has 10/100/1000
The Roku(s) are 10/100
The Sony Players are 10/100, but Streaming is a secondary function to those, so that can be forgiven there.
The PC I rebuilt, I added a 10/100/1000 card over the onboard stock 10/100.

I can't speak for the other streaming devices, other the Xbox One S I had for a short time that also had 10/100/1000
So, at this point in time it might as well just be standard on any device with an Ethernet port. I doubt it would drive the cost up at all, and it's good for local streaming.

I finally came to the decision that I would need to have BOTH a Roku Ultra and an Apple TV 4k. I use the roku because it has the most channels. Including private channels and stuff you won't find any place else. I use the Apple TV 4k for Dolby Vision as well as accessing my Itunes library and getting movies from itunes for rent or purchase at a much discounted price. It's nice having both. And with Apple coming out with Atmos in the next couple months, the Apple tv will definitely be my primary device for Netflix, Prime, etc. as those providers add more features to the apple tv device.

As for the price of the roku. There are plenty of sales and decent prices.

1. Today; on amazon; the ultra is $74.99 (Certified refurb)
2. At Sam's Club the Stick+ (same performance); on sale for $54.88 (New)
3. I saw at target this past weekend for $79 (back to normal now)
4. I bought Ultra at Costco a month ago; normal $89.99 I got it on sale $69.99

There's sales all the time. Just got to keep your eye out for them.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Prime to work properly in iOS12. I still get stereo from almost every show I try to watch. I also have the ATV4K + Stick+ on my chain. The Roku is for Prime and YouTube, the ATV for everything else.

I would love to hear from someone who has the new build 4145 that had the audio dropout issues with 4137. I am curious if that issue was fixed. I have not received the update yet -- for whatever reason I always seem to be one of the last people here to get the updates (maybe it's because of all the bad things I say about their software engineers ).

All streaming services are very low bitrate. So a 100 Mb/s EThernet port has way more than enough speed. For local streaming though, I've needed to use Wireless AC with devices like my SOny UHD BD player and ROku Ultra to play UHD videos that exceed 100Mb/s. So they can play them flawlessly over wifi while if using their wired 100BT connection, they buffer like crazy.

So they can play them flawlessly over wifi while if using their wired connection, they buffer like crazy.
I'm aware of internet streaming service, was mainly focusing on local streaming. As far as local streaming UHD content, that doesn't apply to me right now as my blu-ray drive while stated to support BDXL format, is not able to read UHD discs, so my local library is limited to standard Blu-ray and DVD for now. I keep addressing the Roku here, because it's the only device that gives me random issues with local streaming when using Plex. Everything else works fine. Up til this point, no one has been able to offer anything useful regarding the situation either. Not even anyone from the Plex forum has offered anything. My findings suggest a bandwidth issue, but not with my network bandwidth, it's how Plex, on the Roku is processing the stream. I'm dealing with standard H.264 content @1080p / 24. My findings also suggest anything labeled so far at 30 Mbps or lower play ok at full quality without transcoding needed. Anything Marked as 40 Mbps, or above as the video bitrate seem to have random issues not keeping a stream (ROKU only). The only useful piece of information I've found that makes any sense regarding the situation is from Plex support on buffering under Device limitations and it mentions some devices have a memory limitation that can cause playback issues at higher bitrates. This is the only logical explanation if the Roku Plex channel, or the Hardware / software itself aren't fully optimized for the kind of local streaming I'm looking at doing.

Just got a chance to test 4145 on my first gen Ultra. Thought I was good until I paused the movie, the dropouts are still there and even worse. Instead of being intermittent the audio in Netflix completely went silent on one show and followed no matter what show I started until I rebooted the unit. . Ultra—->Denon 2400h—->900e
