Has anyone's had auto frame rate switching broken with Netfllix recently? I just tried today and it's not working, even after a factory reset. I'm on a Roku Ultra 4640X (the one with SPDIF) on version 9.1.0 build 4111-29. Auto frame rate switching enabled on advanced settings of course. I have a Pioneer KRP-500M, and frame rate switching used to work in my setup. I'm thinking a Netflix app update might have broken it.

I have a Roku Ultra with an older Samsung TV. It works fine--except that all Amazon Prime movies appear with the soap opera effect. I turned off SOE on the Samsung years ago, and I don't see anywhere to turn it off on any Roku controls or anywhere else (eg, at Amazon Prime itself)--but it must be coming from somewhere. I suspect some folks here have dealt with this before...

Thanks. Did you try Netflix though? Is it switching refresh rates for 24p content? Can your TV take 24p input?

Early June or there about, a Netflix update reportedly broke framerate matching on Roku.

Hopefully an update will fix it. Soon?

Dammit, thanks for the info. Was going crazy trying to troubleshoot.

EDIT: Extra dammit: it appears it was a deliberate change by Roku, who knows why. I bought the Roku specifically for this function. I already had 2 Fire Sticks and a PS3 I could use for Netflix.

You can enable frame rate matching under advanced>>advanced video (sorry, I'm not in front of my Roku for the exact menu names).

Seems Roku can't win with this issue. There were a huge number of complaints about Netflix constantly causing a refresh rate change because of their auto-play videos. This apparently is their solution until Netflix changes their channel. I cancelled Netflix a few months ago, and the auto-play was one of the reasons. Netflix themselves doesn't appear to care what the customer thinks, so I spend my money elsewhere.

Thanks. Yes, Netflix had the same problem (I had thought is was OK). Somehow the Auto Motion Plus setting to Off had reverted to Standard. I'm not sure why.

I have seen this stated a few times, but is there any official statement about it? Because someone else also said that NF had fixed the autoplaying menu switching at some point before refresh rate switching was disabled (sorry can't find the post right now). And even before reading that, I had a memory that it actually did, last time I tried as well, which would have been probably in April or May, but I don't trust that memory too much.

I think it depends on the content. For instance, I'm currently watching the series "Chuck" and this one seems to be much louder than others so I always have to turn down the volume. Also, on this series the auto skip doesn't seem to work.

When you browse through titles on Netflix it will play a short clip of whatever title you happen to be on in the background. Some of these titles will have frame rates that differ from whatever you have your equipment set to operate at, this seems to bother some people and apparently why Roku decided to play Mommy and disabled native frame rate playback in Netflix.

I have no idea what auto-skip is.

And that's a decent price for a REFURBISHED product. I posted a NEW product. I also only paid $49.99 for new over the Holidays but that was then.
Doesn't matter now as the sale ended at newegg!

Yes, I realize that there is a difference, but it mostly rests in the length of the warranty coverage (one year for new, 90 days for refurb). Otherwise, there is no essential difference in the product. My refurb looks and performs like brand new. And I have had nearly identical experiences over the years with purchasing new and manufacturer-refurbished electronics: the one is just as likely to fail as the other. And I do enjoy a bargain. But YMMV.

But timing is everything and it appears that you got a great deal yourself.

I didn't buy anything, I was simply sharing in case someone needed one.

For $20 more I'll buy the new every day but as you say, YMMV. What you say is usually true but in fact you have no idea why that particular device was returned. I go with refurbs when I save at least 50% but even then, not always.

I was under the impression that the EPIX app on the Ultra unit had selective original shows and movies in 4K . I don't see any original series listed as 4K and only one movie, Death Wish . I watched a few minutes of Death Wish and it didn"t look like 4K . I know my settings for the Roku box are correct as Amazon and Netflix 4K shows look very good . Does EPIX support 4K on the Roku box ?

ESPN app is horrible but I'm posting to update my experience with 3 streamers on it. Hint: I'm giving advantage to Roku again; here's why. ESPN app experience could be better on all platforms and Fire TV and Roku voice assistants could use some improvement. And yet given Roku's basics, it excels for many reasons.

Apple TV 4K
Where voice enabled apps are concerned, this is my go-to device, especially tennis for 90 second changeovers, 10 second skip on the fly for between plays and scrubbing for jumping at longer intervals. Usually there's a player warm-up period that I get clues for based on tournament watching and can voice skip to the beginning of match play after toss. All this works well for Tennis TV and ESPN for tennis but ESPN broke the screensaver about a year ago and has yet to acknowledge it. Three emails yesterday and finally ESPN support agreed to forward my complaint to its app developers.

Only issue that ESPN does acknowledge for Apple TV is the play/pause won't toggle play. I can pause but not resume. Select or touch pad will resume, however. Minor issue but needs fixing along with screensaver.

Apple's auto sign in does not work well ESPN after updates. I've seen it work with ESPN after initial install on device that didn't have it and allowing TV provider share through settings but updates seem botched for auto sign in and Apple TV frequently loses sync with TV provider requiring the web interface to negotiate again.

Apple TV had a tendency to restart matches from beginning by default. Fire TV and Roku do not. Some apps on Roku may give option to restart or resume matches by default. I see this on Tennis TV app with Roku but not Apple TV. Does Apple APIs lack this resume feature?

Fire TV 4K Stick
New Alexa enabled app for ESPN is missing the voice skip features. Way to go ESPN, suggested I uninstall and reinstall the app. Labeled all my initial complaints as obvious hardware issues.

As for ads placed on homescreen and dedicated to Prime as well as framerate matching only working in Prime apps, I'm finding less reasons to use this device. Another common complaint with all things Alexa is her voice replies are obnoxiously-annoyingly loud with no volume limitations other than main volume. Why Amazon? Same applies Echo devices other than the Cube.

Playback seems jumpy for some reason. Ok, I see why, now; it's a player view that's zoomed and cameraman is doing too much panning correction, keeping player centered.

The fixed interval jump I see with Roku (below) is missing in Fire TV. These issues make Fire TV the least enjoyable interface for me on ESPN app.

Roku Ultra
Google voice assistant is very limited in Roku in all apps; dedicated mostly to content search. This app keeps a better TV provider sync but sometimes the content returns unauthorized for ESPN3, requiring sign out and signing back on web interface of another device.

No auto launch of live TV when opening app? Love this!! There's far too often loud obnoxious contested opinion going. No interest whatsoever in this banter. Framerate matching works although it seems most content is 60p anyway. Maybe ESPN has their own cameras all around the globe in coverage?

Skipping isn't by voice but at least the pause, then using right arrow clicks will result in fixed interval jumps. Don't have to pause to use this interval jump either. Just play or select after jump. I can deal without voice skip but honestly, voice skip is my desired feature.

But I can't deal without a screensaver in Apple TV so Roku it is for ESPN app. I'm going to copy this post and attach this to my support ticket to ESPN. Maybe they won't break anything that works well at the moment. No reason to change anything on the Roku ESPN app (except user navigation ease that all platforms need; too many clicks to content!) until the Google Assistant gains voice skipping feature (will it ever?). Personally, the app is so bad elsewhere, I only subscribe when a tennis slam has coverage. But I had cancelled after US Open and did without for Australian Open because of the Apple TV screensaver still broken. I'm surprised that's still broken.

Yes, the remote has the headphone jack as shown below. It is theRoku Ultra model 4661XB and came complete with all original accessories, to include remote w/batteries, JBL headphones w/extra earpads, power adapter, and quick start guide. Everything appeared to be in mint condition in cellophane protective wrapping, as you would expect from a reputable manufacturer's refurbishing process. The only discernible distinction from brand new was that it came in a plain brown custom box without the retail graphics and labeling, also shown below.

Anyone interested can check out the seller's eBay listing; there appears to be plenty of stock on hand. Otherwise, I imagine there will be some more good year-end sales like the one @rakstr took advantage of last year.

But timing is everything and it appears that you got a great deal yourself.

That offering mentions 2017. That's interesting. What model? I bought my 4640X in June '18 only because of the optical for my older receiver that didn't do HDMI! The Ultra now I believe doesn't have the optical or so I've been told.

Yep, the current Ultra is the 4660/61. No optical, no Dolby Digital encoder. Comes with higher quality ear buds.

Hopefully Roku will do a new high end streamer with Dolby Vision this Fall. In the meantime, I'm planning on buying a second Dolby Vision streamer (FireTV Stick 4K) to go with my ATV4K. Like @brotony my Ultra is more convenient than my Apple but Dolby Vision is nice. I'm guessing for Prime Day the FireTV 4K Stick with Dolby Vision should be about 30 USD.

I have all three streamers you mention and also tend to prefer the Roku. However, I'm very impressed with the FireTV 4K, much more impressed than I thought I'd be. The UI is very fast and the picture quality is top notch. The lack of YouTube TV is a negative for me, but it's due to be added sometime this year. I find it easy to ignore most of the advertising on the menu screens, but the UI could still use some major tweaks. Perhaps it's best feature is the included remote that can control your TV and receiver as well as the Fire TV itself. Very cool!

I'm also hoping for an upgraded Roku with Dolby Vision and a faster processor. I'll be first in line to pre-order it and then put my other streamers in storage!

Do any of the Roku TVs have Dolby Vision? That might be a place to look and see what might be ahead with their streamers.
