I posted on their forums they replied promptly.

If it's plugged in to the display you will get DV from both the built in cast or the Ultra.

Nope it was correct.
The thread shows since the last firmware that hdr does not work when directly connected to vizio tv's. The firmware added Dolby vision and the Chromecast now tries to send the wrong signal to the tv.
The only current work around is plugging the ultra into an avr instead of your tv.

I guess what I mean is would the AVR be able to pass that data on? I know new AVRs have 2.0a support, but would it need something else to pass DV?

It is hard to know right now since this is the only device on the market with DV support other than built in TV apps.

What it needs is to correctly pass the edid from the tv to the Chromecast ultra. Currently something is not working right with that. Not yet sure if it is caused by the avr or the ultra. 2.0a. Is not needed for Dolby vision.

Anyone know if Google have plans to add support for 24Hz output? I talked with a Google rep yesterday and all she could say was that i should send them feedback and tell them i want it.
So i did.

A quick question on streaming YouTube to the Chromecast Ultra. Is there any way to show the "stats for nerds" (see the screen shot below of what a PC shows when this feature is enabled on it) when streaming to the Chromecast Ultra?

No, Since there is no control over the video once it hits the chromecast. And since it is no longer playing on anything but the ultra then no app or pc will be able to monitor it.

For some reason the pull down isn't working when coming thru the AVR. A 24hz setting on the Ultra might be the important factor because this is smelling like a bandwidth issue to me.

Yea the setting would be great. Not sure it is a bandwidth issue though. Since that would cause bad video and such and not what we are seeing which is the chromecast not even detecting a dolby vision tv.

Actually, the device that starts the stream on the CCU does have control over the video, e.g. pause, stop, move to another time of the content, and also audio control.

I think it's the display that's not decoding a DV stream. There's a bunch of reasons that might be. The AVR is suppose to be passing through the signal but It's obviously getting stepped on.

Negative the chromecast doesn't send the dolby vision at all. Otherwise the title would show DOLBY VISION while loading.

Only the Netflix app shows the DOLBY VISION indicator while loading. Vudu doesn't do that while loading.

Chromecast Ultra + PLEX HDR-10

Just digging into the CCU, so I apologize if this has been A&A. Has anyone gotten HDR-10 files to play through the CCU via PLEX? All I've gotten so far is a transcode...

Is there a sound quality difference between the CC Audio and CC Ultra? I'm using the optical connection on the CC Audio direct to my receiver and would do the same with the CC Ultra, but using the HDMI instead. I generally cast Tidal from my phone to the CC Audio. Is the sound quality going to be the same? Better? Worse? Thanks.
Given the output is via HDMI, which in this case supports DD+ and it's associated high bandwidth (which is higher than optical which supports on DD5.1), I would think the quality would be at least as good as with the Chromecast audio. But the only way to know is to listen.

YouTube Channels with HDR Content

Here is a collection of YouTube Channels with some HDR Content that I have come across so far. Each of the following underlined bolded text is a clickable link...

HDR Launch Playlist

A collection of 4 videos that were produced for the launch of YouTube 4K HDR.

The HDR Channel

In addition to some of the stuff you may have already seen via the downloadable demo files there is some new stuff that is being added everyday such as a 12+ minute YouTube HDR video of the Netflix Original Series, Tears of Steel which is an open source movie created by the Blender Foundation. @zmarty created the HDR version starting from their 500 GB master! Sintel is next and that one has a 600GB+ master!! The host of this channel also maintains a list of all known HDR YouTube video available he is aware of here.

isovideo

Although there is some overlap with other channels, if you look under the Uploads section you will find a number of new SDR to HDR conversions. Many of these I have never seen before and I suspect the same goes for other guys based on the low view count for some. For example, I feel like I am revisiting Europe through the Samsung UHD 7 Wonders of the World Italy video and some of the other assorted travel videos available on this channel. For the gamers out there, this channel includes a pretty cool trailer of Rise of the Tomb Raiders available for the PS4 Pro. At least 20 of the videos on this site have view counts in the low hundreds!

pmw350k

There are only a few HDR videos on this channel so far but it does contain the Grays Peak video many guys have downloaded as a demo file back in the olden days before YouTube HDR.

Beware: Some channels you might encounter such as a channel called "UHD/4K", which has some fine 4K videos, have taken the liberty of calling a number of files on their site real hdr when in fact none of the files I tested are HDR so be sure to check the banner as shown in the attached thumbnail before concluding a file is really HDR.

Netflix UltraHD HDR Content

Here are the current as well as the announced and coming soon 4K HDR titles on Netflix.

Please note, the following list applies to the United States and Canada. Although most of these are included in the Netflix app's UltraHD 4K section as shown in the attached thumbnail, I found that in a few cases they did not so I had to search for them to discover that, sure enough, they were also tagged as HDR

It's probably obvious to most but please keep in mind that you need to have an upgraded Netflix account that includes a subscription to UltraHD 4K content. For more on that, please visit the Netflix website for your country.

Optical interfaces in consumer devices are known to have the highest levels of jitter due to the poor quality components and cables used. The optical output on the cca has been measured and it performs worse than an optical output on a consumer motherboard audio interface (which are known to be pretty bad).

Not everyone hears jitter or cares. It's up to you to decide what's good enough.

I just uploaded the world's most boring HDR demo clip:

It plays in UHD HDR on the Chromecast Ultra.

It is a collection of stuff we shot for 8K resolution testing, but I decided to grade them for HDR UHD.

More info:

This is a HDR video test clip, it is a handful of single frames shot on a RED Weapon 8K Vista Vision camera. The frames were exported as 8K 16x9 16bit TIFFs from REDCINEX beta using IPP2. The TIFFs were then graded for HDR in Davinci Resolve @1000 nits and exported as UHD/HDR.

Blue / Red swap on Chromecast Ultra? Anyone else seeing it?

Is anyone else seeing the 'blue skin' Chromecast Ultra problem? What's actually happening is the blue/red colors are being swapped, leading to the blue skin / orange sky effect, as well as the picture being 'shifted' on the screen somewhat.

I know I am not the only person seeing this problem, as this thread linked below talks about it, but is anyone else in the forums seeing this?

Since the problem is intermittent, and clears after a reboot, I could only definitively say this: It occurs with SDR video - guaranteed. The next time it happens (and there will quite likely be a next time) - I will explicitly try out an HDR video. I do know that when it's working, I have watched many HDR videos through it.
