DirecTV Now Streaming TV Service

"Cord cutters looking for cable and satellite TV linear streaming alternatives will have a new option starting tomorrow. DirecTV Now will launch on November 30 with an appealing introductory promotion: early subscribers will get the service’s 100+ channel package (which will normally cost $60 per month) for $35 per month. Additionally, DirecTV Now is offering a one-week free trial of its service."

Looks like Chromecast and Fire TV will be the first to offer, with ROKU later this year. No mention of APPLE tv. I wonder if DirecTV will be streaming all channels in 720p like VUE and Sling. I hope not.

Well, they are giving away an Apple TV if you pay for 3 months in advance, so hopefully Apple TV will support it!

Thanks for the tip! I read your initial post twice, and I dont know how I missed that. Do you know if the stream will only be 720p? Would be nice if they also stream 1080p. With the Apple tv, it will convert everything to 1080p, but it would be nice if DirecTV streams at the native resolution for each channel.

I wonder how many will drop the more expensive satellite offerings and go with streaming. I currently have the satellite service, and I might jump. I have 2 ATV's and I wont have to pay any leasing fees for their boxes anymore. Hopefully, the NFL package will be offered via streaming too.

The issue for some of us cord cutters is that we don't want useless channels with some decent ones thrown in. I wish these companies would allow us to bundle our own channels - the ones we want to watch. Until they revise their outdated sales model, I am very happy with my Mohu Leaf antenna and uncompressed video (as opposed to compressed video from Satellite and Cable).

According to the Verge, only 2 streams at a time. So if you have more than 2 devices trying to stream at the same time, you are out of luck.

I guess I will have to call them. I currently have the NFL package, and can stream on my iPhone and iPad. If I can keep my NFL package for the rest of the season, I can airplay from my phone to ATV.

Although this seems appealing at first glance, I start to do the math and I begin to wonder what the financial benefits are. I recently cut the chord and cancelled my TW cable package. However, I'm still paying 60 or so for my broadband connection. 35 more for the package and I don't see much advantage over just paying the 110 for the convenience of a good cable package with DVR. Ok, an annual savings of 180, but is that savings worth the frustrations of a streaming tech that is still not entirely reliable (damn buffering and dropouts...)? I'm content with my OTA antenna and Neflix and Hulu. I just bought a cheapo tuner/PVR that so far is adequate for recording the very few shows I want to record. I agree, this would be far more appealing if we could pay alacarte for only the channels we really want at a reasonable fee per channel.

I currently subscribe to DirecTV. For me it would make sense. I'm paying close to $100 a month with lease fees, and I can get basically the same thing for $35. That would save me over $700 a year.

I wonder if this package will ever include the 4k sports that direction currently offers? Rumors abound that the world series next year will be 4k on DTV

Hmmm....I'm less and less enthusiastic about this. At first when I heard they were offering 100 channels for $30 plus HBO for $5, I couldn't wait for it. Then heard the price was for a "limited time" and was actually $60. And now no DVR functionality? I'm sticking with Vue.

It doesn't matter how many channels are available rather it's which ones you care about and their related costs. Who cares if there are hundreds you don't watch and it's debatable how much they add to any package for the typical viewer as "numbers" lowers the cost for the ones you care about... regarding OTA "uncompressed" video our market is far from such and Netflix's HD and UHD easily looks superior.

I agree. No DVR not interested. Closing in on two decades of DVRing and I'm not going back. Nowadays there is far too much content available without commercials to put that cat back in the bag.

You are allowed 2 devices streaming at any time. DirecTV provides no boxes for streaming. You need an Apple TV, Fire TV or Chromecast. I would imagine once you can DVR in the future, you will need another device.

No dvr function who watches live tv?

I understand watching the BIG GAME live but even my Old school pops watches his ball games on a record delay so he can fast forward thru commercials. I will stick with Playstation Vue and pray they get NBA TV soon. I have been quite happy watching just UFC events and National televised NBA games

no DVR, but apparently there is "on demand" style service, which is basically the same thing sans the ability to fast forward/rewind.

Directv's OD service is very good on their sat version, so hopefully it will be here too. I cut the cord and have been on Sling, but am going to try the 3 month deal with ATV to see which one I like best.

Thats me since I dropped Directv, by going to sling tv and getting premium channels (HBO) in other ways, I am going to save $60/month roughly, but with the $35 deal, I'd save even more.

Nope. I paused my directv, and will just pay the penalty 6 months from now when the pause comes off. The money I am saving covers that.

https://www.cnet.com/news/directv-no...nels-compared/

Here is a good channel comparison. For the $35/month Go Big lineup, it is about half as much as I would pay sling so Directv is aggressive, and you get the free ATV. Ill prob run both side by side for bit and see what I think, best thing about no contracts.

I don't mind just having the Redzone channel that is offered in the sports package on SlingTV, but I am guessing you like watching individual games?

The Verge says it has 1080p/DD5.1 output through Fire TV/Apple TV devices.

Now I am tempted just to do the 1 or 3 mos thing and get a free device out of it.

I'm wondering how the On Demand stuff works? So if I get the $5 HBO deal, do I have access to HBO Go or do I have access to HBO's on demand content through the DirecTV Now app?
