Fundamentally that's how they work now. A certain portion of space is reserved for 'buffering' content. I've seen an entire movie download completely to the ATV 4 well before I have finished it. The device will effectively 'buffer' the entire movie.

True.

My Chromecast Ultra was only $69 and offers UHD and HDR and is small an compact as well. Glad Apple is just now catching up with this and their new phones

I too would also love to bitstream lossless from Plex on the ATV, but that is most likely a pipe dream. On that front I am sticking to the Nvidia Shield.

You can do all that utilizing Infuse

Yep. When I used to rent flicks with one and a crappy ADSL connection, it might sit there 5 minutes before it started playing the 1080p movie.

Another important question is whether it will have separate video/audio outputs for legacy receivers without Dolby Vision. Hoping either my Pioneer 701 (2016) gets the DV upgrade or the Oppo 203 gets HDR on its input, but if not I will be stuck with the current dilemma of being unable to combine Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos.

Sorry, but Dolby Digital Plus is not a guaranteed lock for Atmos. The ATV 4 has Plus and yet doesn't do Atmos.

Apparently, Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound has an ATMOS profile.

Universal audio/video receiver (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, etc.) is achieved.
Universal HDR TV (HDR10, Dolby Vision, HEVC HLG HDR, VP9-HLG / VP9-PQ YouTube HDR, Dynamic HDR) is required.

Push for universal HDR TV!

So I'm confused with how lossy Atmos works - will it be a substream with the DD+ signal? Does it create a separate X.X.2 channel?
And this is assuming that iTunes will carry the 4K/HDR movies with Atmos?

Yes, it does. As I stated above, the ATV 4 also have DD+ 7.1 capability, but nothing in the iTunes Store supports Atmos. I do not believe the Netflix app on ATV supports Atmos either. To me, that means no Atmos support even if the hardware can theoretically support it.

Does the new Apple TV support 4K streaming, or only if you download 4K content?

Thanks.

I don't at this point. The fact that the Apple specs for the new ATV are fundamentally unchanged from the ATV 4 in the audio department are all I have to go on. While the device certainly COULD do Atmos, the lack of support means it doesn't matter. The simple fact is that they could have been doing it all along and haven't. I'm not convinced that is going to change at this point as they have made zero announcement.

To clarify, will it upscale my existing library of movies on iTunes to 4K? The ones I've purchased through ITunes in addition to the digital download copies of physical disc purchases?

They said during the keynote they were working with Netflix and Amazon to enable this, so it might not be ready day one.

Technically, purchases and rentals from iTunes are streaming to the box too and will be ready day one. Regardless of how you look at it, the box can and will do it.

Any movie with a 4K version available is how it was described. Older movies may not have a 4K version. I would expect digital download copies to be upgraded due to the user experience split if only some upgrade, but that is not specified anywhere I could find.

I do not believe we have clarity on that yet. They are going to offer free upgrades to HD movies in your library, but we don't know if that includes titles acquired through digital certificates.

I hope they fixed the audio issues they had on the V4! I really like the fact that they have the same price for UHD as the SDR. This will definitely make a vudu drop it's prices.

That depends. The advantage that VUDU has (at least as far as we know right now) is Atmos with their 4K content. That could be one reason Apple has managed to negotiate the pricing that they have.

It is also interesting that Walt Disney is missing from the announcement of supporting studios. I am guessing Apple could not work out the same agreement with them so they aren't at the party at all. Another win for VUDU.

What I heard is they are going to upgrade all HD movies purchased through itunes. That sounds like no redemption codes, but I'm hoping I'm wrong, as I have plenty of each in my library.
