Which streaming box will get dv first?

I'm still waiting for the "perfect box". It's great that vudu supports Dolby vision and atmos, but I have no way to stream a movie and get both!

Vudu on my LG tv plays dv, but not atmos. Both my roku and shield play atmos, but not dv.

My oppo does both, but no streaming.

Argh!

Who do you think will get there first?

The new roku tv's from TCL have dv, but no sign of an update for the ultra (and hdr has been hard enough for them to get right!)

I've heard the rumor that the new apple tv may be the one that finally does it, but it would suck to have to buy another box.

So, will it be:
Apple tv
Roku
nvidia shield
Fire
Or apps on oppo?

True, but I don't really consider Chromecast a streaming box. Casting from phone/tablet doesn't play well in my family.

We have the ultra, and no one in my house liked it. Simple things like deciding what to watch as a family, pausing and ffwd, etc. We're tough to get used to.

For me, it's all moot until yamaha releases the dv pass-thru... Maybe we'll find the Chromecast in the shield works then? Hard to tell now...

Until my Avr passes dv, the Chromecast is the same as my lg... dv or atmos, not both.

Check the new Apple TV on release; also your Oppo box has an input designed for streaming boxes..

Me too, and without even wanting DV or UHD 4K, I discovered after a couple of years of reading and buying the Shield that I still hadn't spotted what I consider a major prob with the Nvidia Shield TV:

Will not play hi-res multi-channel audio files (eg FLAC 5.1 96K 24bit) without dumbing down to 48K and stereo. Apparently a problem with any android-OS system. Even worse, "upsamples" 44.1 cd rips to 48K!!!!

As you said: "Aargh!!"

Even with plex? I thought plex passed the audio through... I have a bunch of hi-res aif files on my plex server. But reality is, I almost always listen to them off usb on the OPPO. I'll have to check that out.

That is where I got tricked. Kodi and Plex passthrough work for DTS and Dolby hires audio tracks on movie files, but not straight audio files.

A number of fairly credible-sounding posters in different forums have all said the major hurdle is the android music player built into the android OS, and it is very difficult to get around. I know the UAPP and Onkyo etc apps do a good job through USB DACs, but I have found nothing that will pass through 5.1 multi-channel hires FLAC through the HDMI out to my AVR.

The new Apple TV will have it definitely, according to this:

https://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/...12986726871040

I use NVIDIA Shield now in my main viewing room, which does HDR10, but not DV (and also use an Apple TV 4, and have an Amazon stick and a Roku).

The Apple TV has by far the best UI and the best designed apps, so I am looking forward to the new version.

Just what I need, another box!

Does atv lock you in to the apple ecosystem like their phones? E.g.. how flexible have they been with file formats, support for non apple smart home integration, etc?

Well....

I guess apple is the first dv streamer...
HEVC Dolby Vision (Profile 5)/HDR10 (Main 10 profile) up to 2160p

but no atmos?
AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound)

Or does vudu carry atmos in an e-ac-3 container? I know it's dd+, but can't tell from the specs whether it'll work with the atv.

C'mon nvidia and roku! You gonna stand for this and let the ultimate follower beat you! (closest I could find to a troll)

We're all waiting... that's why I've "settled" for the Chromecast Ultra. I'd much rather have a remote and on-screen GUI, but at the moment, nothing is "perfect". My Denon X3300W just got the DV update last night, so I'm pretty much set, other than having to use my phone as a remote.

Holly Molly, since i got Shield i got rid of roku, Vten and Apple tv 4. I think can happily live with my smart oled app, excellent local stream, DLNA, speed of shield and DV from Oppo for the time being. I might consider Apple tv once i can get below $100 for air tv

Of course the ultimate follower has enough cash to absorb both companies . Seriously though between Google, Apple, Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft they will soon control most of the tech as you know it.

Apple came so close - but lack of audio is a bummer

Maybe Nvidia shield 2.0 will have dv
