Working on it: the Dune now uses my own unbound DNS server, which logs all the entries.
Next time there is an ad, I'll see if it points to a particular server. If it does, and it's not the same as the firmware server, I'll block it and relay the info how to do it.

A few questions though.. Why is Movies populated by movie posters i dont even have in my collection, and when you press them says you cant play this? And i have reset this unit so many times i lost count.
Also i havent added anything to my collection as i use yadis so where does the dune get these movie posters and information from when i havent added a single item? And how do i delete the my collection and movie folder or at least empty the movie folder so there is no items in it?

Glad you got it working....Windows 10 is great for media once you know what you're doing.

The Movies section pulls data from a 3rd party Russian repository and your local files. I'm not sure you can delete that but I think you can disable it so it only scans locally. Most of the movies won't even load up from the repository anyway.

Any opinion on the Egreat A11 vs the Zidoo for mostly Bluray / 4K HDR ISO playback? Read you review on the A11 and it's tempting but don't know much about Zidoo or Dune.

Would you happen to know how to disable that?

Also, would you happen to know if you can turn the dune on by using the android app? I cant seem to get that working.. Would be cool if you could ditch the remote completely.

The sudden add is very irritating, but it is also a bit weird. It tells you to buy from them at shop.dune-hd.com and you'll get a 38% discount. I'm interested in upgrading so, I went there but there is no discount. Where are you guys buying them?

Most of the times, I hate ads but for some reason, I was encouraged by this one and it was on my D1, now if they were to continue this without perfecting the 4K players, than i would be upset .........

I think this might related to Windows 7 using a less secure version of smb and the dune pro might use the more secure smb versions which come as standard on Windows 10.

Glad this got sorted.

Another alternative to hanenfs is allegro nfs for Windows 7.

In the US it'd be duneplayer.com ($199)

Here in the UK it's anyone's guess!

Scan.co.uk show them as "End of Life" which presumably is their way of saying they don't stock them any more.

Futeko.com who have a great rep for shipping worldwide have discontinued them.

Ripcaster.co.uk seem to have them at £240 ($300!!) but they show next batch arriving 5th October (last year!)

Alza.co.uk show them in stock at £278 ($350 )

I guess this is why they are advertising on the boxes now - something seems to have gone wrong with their supply chain, at least over here...

I'm using Win7Pro with latest updates and everything works fine, I don't have any problems with the Network.

I managed to trigger the ads by using my backup Dune Pro. I am a backup fanatic, so I have a workaround for every possible failure.
This Dune 2 was configured to use DHCP. I set it to use a static 192.9.200.73 IP to be able to use my unbound DNS server running on my main W7x64 PC, and I got the ads!
Here is the log of the DNS requests. Unfortunately, they are not time-stamped, so I can't be sure which ones were from Dune 2:

I noticed a call to "online.dune-hd.com", so I added to the "C:/Program Files (x86)/Unbound/service.conf" file the following entries:

Code:
local-zone: "online.dune-hd."
redirect local-data: "online.dune-hd. IN A 127.0.0.0"
Then, I switched back Dune 2 to DHCP first, and then to static pointing to my unbound DNS server.
I noticed 3 things:
1) No ads. Good, but not conclusive, it could be a boot count trigger.
2) Dune 2 tried to update an Andoid plugin, and failed. For me, GOOD!
3) Not problem checking for a new Dune firmware, and not problem to download it. I cancelled the install before the end, but it was going fine. GOOD!
I can't be sure the ads are effectively cancelled, I'd need to do a full reset of the box and start from scratch, which is way too much work. But I have a good feeling.

Can i ask what NIC you have? I got it working on a box that has an intel nic,but the realteks on my 2 other boxes i simply could not get to work with dune 4k..Wether it is drivers, windows, dune firmware or a combination i have no idea. Might be because the drivers are ancient for the realteks or the buffer sizes too small. I noticed i could increase buffer sizes on my intel both recieve and transmit, on the realtek it was locked to 128..

Anyways, i have now switched to win 10 and it works perfectly..

A funny anecdote, my Dune D1 and popcorn hour has now stopped working,i cant access the window shares at all from these 2 units..Goes to show you, new and old tech is a bad combination..

Just for information my Dune D1 showed up that ad you guys are talking about two days ago too.
I just think it was a way to introduce us the new, I mean, the updated products.
Of course we already know them, but this is marketing.
I was surprised with that, it has never happened, but nothing more. At least for me.

I concur - I just remembered I have another Dune Solo gathering dust so I just tried that and my DNS reported:

2019-06-02 14:09:07 A online.dune-hd.com 192.168.0.52 OK (forwarded) CNAME (6.4ms)
2019-06-02 14:09:07 AAAA online.dune-hd.com 192.168.0.52 OK (forwarded) N/A

There were no other domain calls I didn't recognise, so yes, either redirecting or blacklisting that sub-domain should do it.

Hi mate,

The Dune is connected to my router (a TP-Link Archer C9) via cable, my files are on a QNAP NAS and my PC with Win7 Pro is connected to the router via a TP-Link Archer T9E.

I can stream from both my NAS or from my PC without any problems.

Cheers

My NAS uses an Aquantia 10GB RJ-45 connected to a 10G Netgear switch, and the Dune can access the files with proper ID, but not WORKGROUP directly.

Before that, the Dune went to the PC using a Broadcom BCM57781 NetLink PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller through a regular 1G Netgear switch.

The PC itself also goes directly to the NAS using a Mellanox 40G QSFP+ adapter for maximum speed when remuxing movies for example.

Ahh,i misread that for the switch/router.. Looks like none of you have a realtek nic, which makes me believe it must be the combination of old nic/drivers/windows7 and newer hardware with newer updated protocols. Cant think of anything else that would make this behaviour..

Oh well,i have moved on and i also figured out how to connect my old media streamers so everything is dandy, except for that windows 10 privacy issue, but that is a discussion for another day ;-)..

I am really enjoying this unit so far..I could use a bit better time search function with intervals like 30 second/1 minute and so on..But in a pinch the android app navigator bar is fine

How do i block that dune advertising domain?

Particularly since there's no mention in changeLogs.

Hope it's not a sign of things to come..
TBH I don't welcome adds for new products when the current one is still effectively in a beta state over a year after I bought it!

But let's be honest, these things never really get out of beta - they're always developing, which is ok with me, but what isn't ok is advertising on a box I've paid good money for.

Anything that squirts out of my network I didn't ask for is malware in my book, and ok it's not malicious, but it's certainly unwanted.

Depends what tools you have at your disposal..

On the information we have so far, you could either redirect or blacklist the DNS query for online.dune-hd.com if you run a local Domain Name Server (obviously, most people don't)

You could create an outgoing firewall rule on your router and block 213.239.217.79 which is what the sub domain resolves to.

Or presumably you could just turn off automatic update checking on the box as this must be the mechanism it uses.

To be honest though, I very much doubt they'll do it again - at least not for a while - I seriously can't believe they'd shoot themselves in the foot like that...

What I meant is I resent them pushing the new go faster stripped gear while we still have a box that is in a beta state of maturation 18 months after launch!

Yes, I see what you mean - I do wonder if they've buggered up their supply chains somewhat though and this is why they're doing it - feels kind of desperate.

I never figured out why it seems to like showing me posters of movies I don't have, but I just turned My Collection off completely and use yaDis.

From memory, it's setup/miscellaneous/plugins and delete "Dune Extension" ..... I think....

Excellent thank you.. Turning this off wont effect other functionality than my collection?
I wonder what engineer thought it would be awesome to populate your collection with random crap from russia or wherever.

No, it only affects My Collection (which should possibly be renamed to Not My Collection or Partly My Collection But Mostly Not)

LOL.. Just shows you how far these eggheads are from ordinary users.. Reminds me of an episode of The Big Bang Theory and a simple piece of ikea stereo rack furniture that ended up with aerospace cooling and complicated math to assemble :-D
