Hehe, as far as BD/4k UHD a/v remuxes....I just started doing that so only 5 titles ....but my overall collection of BDs is around 300. Going forward....I will probably continue only buying the UBD when the regular BD does not include ATMOS and remux.

Its at least 3+ years before I can even consider taking the plunge for a good 4k/HDR projector and I just don't watch movies on the 4k TV in the bedroom that often. Its mostly used for gaming. But I do like ATMOS which is really the only reason for me to get the 4k discs.

I'd like to stress that my last name is spelled Coluzzi. One "L" Two "Zs"

I can be reached at [email protected]

Oh and did I mention that I now love "flashing" drives? I love "cross flashing" drives even more! No joke. LG > ASUS absolutely!

This morning I woke up, tried to flash the microwave into a toaster, failed! Dog into a cat? Another fail. The dog didn't appreciate me shoving a cable into his SATA 0 port!

I would have preferred HeroinColuzzi to be honest but I've been clean and sober going on two years now.

Hey who maintains a list of their full disc backups that can share it with me to compare some file sizes?

Not yet. It was just one of the drives on sale at newegg this week for $35. I found conflicting info online about whether it could be cross flashed. But I ordered it anyway since it was only $35. And I ordered another Asus drive and usb 3.0 enclosure off ebay to use.

I plan to get my dedicated plex machine setup this week and I'd like to dedicate two UHD friendly drives to it for ripping. My current pLex machine shares duties with my TiVo/kmttg software. Plus it's way underpowered for trying to transcode UHD content since it's only a core i3..

Do you know what it is trying to transcode? Emby server shows a description of what component of the file needs conversion.

This was another question I was about to ask... it sounds to me like Plex is "direct playing" the 4k UHD mkv to the NV Shield? I haven't tried it yet on my Emby Server, still waiting for my drive to start ripping. But I am worried the "streaming" and on the fly transcoding will be a problem with UHD mkv rips.

A thought I had was to make a separate folder for UHD rips and have Emby server disable transcoding for that folder. So, if an out of network client (or in network client that doesn't have compatible hardware) wants to play that file, it would only allow it to play if it can "direct play".

Yes plex is direct playing on the shield but I have been having issues playing 4K mkv files lately. It may be a Plex software issue. Using Kodi on my shield or the Dune 4K Pro plays these in native resolution with no issues.

Yeah it's probably the lack of support from Plex (as well as Emby) for 4k transcoding. I don't even use the Emby players for my .mkv files. I pretty much exclusively use Kodi, which even with the Emby plugin, doesn't really depend on Emby other than its meta.

With the ROku I need to force Plex to Direct play. Once it direct plays then most of theMKV UHD rips I've tried on the ROku will play back fine. But still some won't play at all.

With my Shield TV it will direct play all my UHD MKV rips without any issues.

I often run into issues just trying to direct play 1080p .mkvs via Plex on the Shield....even Kodi screws up sometimes. Whereas, Kodi running on a little Odroid C2 works flawlessly ...even 4k .mkvs. Only had one exception to that with Infinity Wars and I still really have no clue why.

Weird, I have around 500 blu-rays (including 100+ UHD blu-rays) ripped with MakeMKV, and they all play flawlessly in Plex and Kodi on the Nvidia Shield.

Which ebay vendor? There is a ton of garbage on there. One dipstick sent me a $24 DVD/CD burner in a BW-16D1HT box. Wait, no that was a guy off Amazon marketplace. No matter, that's what I get for cheating on Fry's.

The seller was memoryc_deals.
I'm not really worried. If I get sent something like that, I will be able to get a full refund from either Ebay or Paypal. I've never had any problem in the past getting a full refund and free return shipping if I received something different than was advertised. Even from Amazon it's not a problem getting a refund if you get sent something different from a Marketplace seller.

EDIT: I wish I would have a waited a few days to order. I see ebay has 15% off everything today with the code PREGAME15. I could have saved around $19 off the drive and enclosure purchase.

I just have a single UHD friendly drive, an external LG drive, BE16NU50, that I snagged from Best Buy 12/2017 before they disappeared. I’ve ripped about 50 uhd discs and many blu rays without issue. I see a lot of people rightfully worried about their drives failing and looking to purchase drives and flashing firmware so they have a backup to keep ripping. I have actually never had a disc drive fail but maybe I have just been lucky. Anyone know what the reliability of these drives actually is? I haven’t looked into purchasing another or reading much about the firmware flash process but I definitely would be pissed if I lost the ability to rip. I was just hoping if I ever did need a drive I could get one and flash at that time or maybe some other process would be available. Am I being stupid?

I just flashed my third Asus drive tonight. I received it from Ebay today. Another BW-16D1HT model. With a manufacture date of May 2018.

I timed it this time. I used the Windows method again. it took me around 4 minutes to do everything with the drive. What took a long time is booting from the USB stick I have. It takes at least five minutes for it to boot each time with the slower USB stick I'm using.

But the process of reading the stock firmware, combining it with a clean firmware, and then writing the combined firmware to the drive took around four minutes. And with the Windows process it's very automated. You just need to run two programs and also name the files so they don't get mixed up.

Now I just need to wait for the Vantec enclosure I ordered from Ebay to show up.

I have worn out a few optical drives, and in each case it took thousands of disc rips to do it.

Exercise some caution and give the drive a break to cool off between discs, it should last a pretty long time. Of course there are always failures not related to mechanical issues, like failed lasers, but those are rare.

I know I'm being a little lazy and not reading through these procedures but right now I just have a windows 10 laptop that is being used as a dedicated media server so only have the option of external drives. Is that even possible with current methods?

Good to know your experience. I expect to rip into the hundreds but doubt I will ever hit 1000's of discs. My wife would divorce me if I purchased that many discs.

Its surprisingly easy to hit those kind of numbers over the years, especially when you wind up ripping a bunch more than once for various reasons, like user error, hardware failure, etc.

I have to report that my new Synology 1817+ with six Western Digital Red 10TB drives is really nice. The drives are a lot quieter than my existing Western digital 8TB drives in a Western Digital PR4100 NAS.

The fans on the NAS are also extremely quiet in “quiet mode”.

Not for flashing. It needs to be connected to a SATA port on the Motherboard and set for IDE mode to be able to flash it. Personally I would never mess around with a PC I use regularly for doing this. i just used an old PC I'm not using any more. I typically don't want to use the PC I use regularly so i can't mess something up by accident on a PC I need to use. And if I'm in a rush that is when I would do it and connect something back wrong and screw myself.

Is there a nice guide somewhere on the best practice for forced subtitles? I am going to start researching the makemkv toolnix software. I want to ensure all movies with forced subtitle play properly.

Next up is learning how to combine the best scenes into one mkv file.

Best gunshots:
1.) Den of thieves.... truly amazing
2.) John Wick
3.) ?

X) Ready Player One Artemis gunshots at the Distracted Globe dance club... if you have enough power and the right speakers her gunshots sound incredible

Thanks. That's what I thought I had read. I haven't had a desktop/tower PC for a long time. Oh well. Fingers crossed my drive continues to work for years. I would have to look into getting a cheap/old PC from somewhere to do this if needed.

Very cool. You are now a Subject Matter Expert! Did you have to use an old computer to do it?

Can you expand on that? What sort of drive tests and how does leaving the last bay open allow for secure erase? Thanks!
