I'd just like to hear from a Samsung owner whether they get the same results with HDR10+ rips..
This is pretty disappointing news!

When you say media files, does this include playing the original (HDR10+).m2ts file outside of the UHD disc folder-set?

Well we need some testing from people using HDR10+ displays. But at present I cannot get any kind of HDR from any kind of ripped file. Only works from a full disc rip. So yes, it seems to be even more crippled than DV as far as ripping is concerned.

Since the OPPO DV-970HD, I've never been without one, in fact, that 970 is still in service at my mother's place.

I tested another of the recent HDR10+ titles and get the same results. Rip to media file = no HDR.

(it was on the same power cable) This happened within 10 minutes of starting my computer. I figure the drive shorted out but who knows how.

Thankfully I have a RAID 10 setup with 4 HDD's and after replacing some burnt cabling she's up and running again. Still have to replace the bad drive and re-build the array though.

I don't know if this has been an issue with this particular drive but you might want to keep an eye on your computers for a bit after start-up, just in case.

I guess it's good that I only power up my three Asus drives when I am ripping. The external enclosures, they are in, are turned off otherwise.

The drive you got from me? What in the heck happened? Those things don't draw that much juice. Do you still have the carcass?

I'd assume that was the cable itself that caused that. In the process of melting down it could have sent 12v into the 5v line, who knows how much current.

No, it wasn't from you and I wouldn't hold it against you if it had. I got the ASUS from NewEgg. You sent me an LG that's still working fine. I do still have the ASUS "carcass" but the connector is too damaged to try and hook it up to see if it still works. I don't even want to take that chance.
I haven't a clue what happened. I did notice some kind of fluid coming out of the back of the drive like a light oil, maybe something leaked and shorted out or something.

I have a backup BW-16D1HT I got from Fry's a while back I will install eventually. I'll have to flash the firmware for it though.

If you are referring to the hard drive getting toasted I totally agree that was the cause. It was on the same power cable. I am going to re-route power and separate that hard drive from anything else like the other three are. As for the plug just melting down on it's own, I don't think so. Something would have had to cause it to overheat. Since I've been using the ASUS drive for months and it's power connector was the one that burned up leads me to believe it was the drive that failed.

A flag that says "HDR" or "HDR10", can't remember which, will show up on the TV screen or if you are playing the file on a device like a Blu-Ray player you can check the output information. Of course your TV has to support HDR in the first place.

And some TVs don't have anything show up on screen. You have to check your settings to actually see if the word HDR show up when playing HDR content.

I'm really glad I've been keeping the makemkv backups. It takes up a ton more space but I speculated it'd be worth it. Does anybody have a good workflow/workthrough of taking a BDMV backup and mounting to ISO? There is no media player that'll play a BDMV folder right? It has to be mounted?

Many of the available android or Dune boxes can handle folders to some extent. Oppo players handle folders. Generally speaking, if they can handle ISO they can also handle folders, although the reverse is not necessarily true.

A program like ImgBurn will take folders and make an iso.

Just to clarify, the backup folder created by makemkv (where it creates a folder with the BDMV folder, CERTIFICATE folder and MAKEMKV folder) can be played without have to mount the folder to ISO?

Anybody know if Emby or Plex can handle these folder?

Not sure on opposite, but if you mount the iso you should be able to drag out the folders. Not sure on MAC I’m PC only.

I believe this is the one I used way back when I was first starting out. I haven’t changed anything for UHDBRs.

Just-so-you-know...

I have created a dedicated topic about this HDR10+ issue over on the Doom9 forum. See here: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=175947

That has to be the dumbest forum ever for registering.
Anyway, there's nothing yet from someone who actually can play HDR10+. There will be a lot of confusion due to the output being (apparently) 10-bit BT.2020 SDR. Some devices and software will still call that HDR. But my LG display certainly does not. M2TS, MKV, even M2TS played from inside the actual full-disc folder rip - none of it plays as HDR here. (Except the full disc folder or ISO) I've ripped with MakeMKV, DVDFab11 and AnyDVD, always the same result.

Its an interesting quandary. It may be due to not having an HDR10+ compatible display. Being the reason I have been asking.

Just load them up in a virtual drive and have MakeMKV do it. It will be just like making the folders from a disc.

I just ripped A Beautiful Planet with the latest MakeMKV. I have a Shield TV Pro, Marantz SR7010, and Vizio M70 (2016) and using the Emby app. I had just finished watching an SDR Blu Ray move and got a little worried. The first time I played A Beautiful Planet it did not trigger HDR. But I stopped and played it again and every subsequent time, it triggered HDR10 on my display, confirmed in the displays Info banner not to mention it looked amazing. Obviously can't do HDR10+, but it still seems to trigger HDR10 in my configuration.
