This is certainly going to be interesting.... Just when I was getting used to the UHD ripping workflow - they have to throw a wrench in it. Well, at least storage is cheap. I'll continue to backup BDMV. Just to understand this better; backing up HDR10+ to BDMV doesn't seem to loose the metadata correct?

Correct. The special sauce is lurking somewhere in those folders.

Cheers
What's this mean exactly? That we can have m2ts rips that will properly play in Dolby Vision?

Your drive! Remember, straight flush always beats 4OAK. I walked away from that table with nothing but my um, hmm, oh yeah HAT in my hands.

Is this specific to MakeMKV? Because last night I tried ripping an HDR10+ title to an MKV with RedFox CloneBD. And it played in HDR10 using Plex. It worked just like the DV titles I've ripped.

We could have multiple failure points between the file and the end of the video chain (TV). For me, it is Kodi, Nvidia Shield, and a receiver before it even gets to the TV. Is there something in the MKV file that can used to determine if the HDR10+ was captured or not? Seems like that needs to be done to determine where the root cause of the problem is determined.

Has anyone seen the news that Dolby Vision MP4's can be created from backup ISO's and played via USB on Lg / vizio televisions? Their are hard limitations: Audio can only be in AC3, and we are limited to mp4. The procedure to do is legnthy, but I figured I'd post it here:

The steps are:
1. Make ISO of movie. I have only tested this with Black Panther since that's the only one I own. I will be buying Gladiator this weekend to test out though.

2. Use TS Muxer to open the ISO. Find the correct M2TS file and demux the following files:
A. HEVC1 in 4K (Base layer)
B. HEVC 2 in 1080p (this is the dolby vision enhancement layer)
C. Audio track which you will have to convert to AC3. This is a hard line limitation- you need to use AC3!!!

3. Once you have HEVC1, HEVC2, and the Audio track. Run Dolby Vision MP4Muxer (https://github.com/DolbyLaboratories/dlb_mp4base)
DolbyVision MP4 Muxer only works in Command Prompt so you have to navigate to the corresponding folders where the files are and type

mp4muxer --dv-profile 7 --input-file (baselayername.hevc1) --input-file (dvlayername.hevc2) --input-file (audio.ac3) --media-lang eng --output-file (nameofmovie).mp4

Some of us unfortunately don't have 2 thousand to spend on a UHD bluray player.

I feel you. I got one before they stopped making them and paid regular price. It's the best media player I've owned next to the Dunes, but it isn't worth $2000.

Not sure what model you are referring to but the OPPO UDP-203 I picked up was closer to $500 than 2k... Even the UDP-205 is listed at 13 hundred on the OPPO site.

That was the price when oppo was in business. Good luck finding one for that price anywhere.

lol, checking amazon and I see what you mean. They (203 & 205) are selling for 3x the MSRP. Makes me think I should put mine on E-Bay but I don't know what I would replace it with...

Oppo is still very much "in business", just not making players. Anyway the 203 is selling close to $900 on FleaBay. Arguably still a decent value given the cost of the 2 or 3 other devices you'd have to buy to get all the same functionality.

A little while ago there was talk of creating 3D discs in this discussion. Does makemkv rip 3D discs as it should? I seem to recall making a full disc backup of one awhile back, tried recently and it failed making me think this feature may have been broken. Now i'm thinking I should check again.

I've a friend asking about ripping 3D blu raysand wanted to recommend makeMKV and an ASUS but wanted to be sure about the 3D disc part. He also wanted to burn the contents back onto a blu ray disc and I think something called imgburn will do that?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, it will create MKV files with the MVC encoded 3D image which is found on Blu-ray discs.

However, make sure your playback method supports that format. More devices support the side-by-side and top-bottom variants, which are not used in Blu-ray. MakeMKV will not create those other types. Years ago I think DVDFab would, but I have not used it recently.

It does, if you are planning on using the Oppo 203 I saw in your sig you would need to convert them to m2ts format and reorder the H264 and MVS streams, I think its in this thread or the Oppo thread.

Has anyone tried ripping "Stranger Things" season 2 UHD with makemkv yet? I started to watch the rips tonight but the chapters (possibly the episodes as well) are not in order. If someone has run into this and has a solution, I would appreciate it. I did a Google search and also a search on the makemkv forums but didn't find any results pertaining to this issue.

Did you rip the ISO or individual episode MKVs ? You need to verify if the episodes match the title after ripping if doing individual MKVs. Sometimes TV episodes are not a 1:1 when ripping to MKV so it must be manually checked before you rename them (this happens with BRs as well). I’m guessing due to obfuscation titles are not always in order, but that rarely matters when playing the actual disc.

I have the LG WH16NS40 that I purchased Oct. 2, 2015 and have been trying to get it to **see** my 4k video without success. At this time, I only have one 4k disk to test (Man of Steel), and not having any luck. I even updated the firmware to version 1.01, then after more testing, updated it to version 1.02.

I read somewhere that there is a model of that burner that does not work.

When I insert the 4k movie into my drive, Windows 10 does not even recognize that a disk has been installed into it, should it???

For testing using MakeMKV, I downloaded the keys_hashed.txt file and put it into the MKV data folder and changed the name to KEYDB.cfg. That did not work. There are 4 options for that movie, so I took the hashtag from that text file, and pasted it into a new text file and named it KEYDB.cfg, this is the string that I pasted into the text file, is it correct?? " 9RuZtj!lZ4minryPOIB3cdKG0+pofp1QhKv0sWKW ". Is there something else I need to add to that text file???

Thanks for any help.

The one and only test you really needed to do was to check the sticker on that drive and verify the svc code to be NS50. Having handled and played with literally hundreds of those drives that date sounds right on the edge of when the 4K "loophole" came into being. I'll bet you when that drive was purchased it came with rom ver. 1.00 as you mentioned updating firmware to 1.01 and then 1.02. If that's the case and it still doesn't work it most likely won't. With the current version of makeMKV there is no user interaction needed with the hashed keys file, it is automatically downloaded and updated. You are wasting time messing with the keys file, especially changing it's name like that. The drive may be OK for 2K blu rays but that'll be about it. My advice is to acquire another drive, something much newer.

You are wasting time messing with the keys file, especially changing it's name like that. The drive may be OK for 2K blu rays but that'll be about it. My advice is to acquire another drive, something much newer.
Thank, you Alex, that is exactly the information I was looking for. I have spent several hours trying to get it to work.

I'm still seeing no problem with HDR10+ discs. I've tried two now and they both show up in HDR10 when playing back in PLex. I used CloneBD for the first one to create an MKV. And I used MakeMKV for the second one.

It shows up as HDR10 from multiple devices. With all of them going through an HDMI switch before going to an Onkyo receiver in one setup(with a TCL UHD TV) and a Vizio speaker bar in another setup(with a Sony UHD TV)
captainbrent likes this.

53TB unRAID1a--49TB unRAID2--76TB unRAID3
TCL 6 Series--Sony UBP-X800--Philips BDP7502--Onkyo HT-S7800
XBL/PSN: WormholeXtreme

That's what I use and it works very well. I have a dozen or so successful UHD 4K rips so far with no failures. This includes MKV, ISO and folder rips. Now I've had mine for quite some time and don't know if they've mucked anything up with firmware changes you might get on a more recently manufactured drive.
