whats the download route you are using? youtube red or a video downloader? I use youtube red and the quality varies from video to video depending on how new the video is. if its something older, a CD or MP3 will smoke it. if its newer its a little closer but I still give the easy win to CD. (btw, youtube red only allows you to download at 720P).

I used to use a downloader for youtube videos for 4k videos and the quality was actually very good. the 4k videos were nearly uncompressed. but it all comes down to the original file and how good the quality was when they uploaded it. so it can be all over the map. its a very good way to save money, but theres always sacrifices. I use youtube red now for my music when I'm at the gym, it definitely gets the job done if you have a nice set of headphones and good phone that outputs good sound.

You're mistaking video quality for audio quality. Utube video has low quality audio-usually like 128kb/s aac which is lower quality than the 192kb/s ac3 that dvds use so basically it doesn't matter if you download 480P, 720P or even 1080P video as you're getting the same low quality audio. So yes, a cd blows Utube out the water audio quality wise.

Actually, on YouTube, video quality dictates audio quality.

1080p YouTube is I think 128kbps AAC, which is better than 128kbps mp3 but only ok. According to the spec, you want 192kbps AAC to achieve close to transparency. This is the best quality audio you will get from YouTube without subscribing.

720p and lower quality videos use even lower quality audio - 64kbps or lower AAC.

There is a very noticeable sound difference between the 1080p music videos on YouTube and the same 480p videos...
