This may be off topic but I bought Solaris on iTunes and I haven't found a watchable setting to play it back yet.

It may be 25hz... Maybe I need to try that with match frame rate off.

Do you have access to a Mac? If so you can enable the developer hud and see what frame rate it’s displaying at. 25hz should work fine on the ATV with match frame rate on, it just gets double to 50hz.

Besides from Dark and Bird Box, the Hans Zimmer concert on Netflix also seems to be 24.00hz.
Hopefully Apple can fix this in a future update.

I'm MASSIVELY disappointed in the Apple TV 4K. Had some friends over today to watch "The Idol" (2016) movie, and the frame skipping is all over the place because the movie is a 24.000hz movie, and with Frame-rate matching enabled on the Apple TV it's playing it at 24p (23.976hz). The frame-rate is a mess.

Just embarrassing. How on earth does Apple even LET you rent/buy movies that don't display properly on their devices?!

A mess? Embarrassing? How come this has never been a problem for me?

Because you don't watch many foreign (non-USA, I mean) movies with frame-rate matching?

The Florida Project is an American movie and it's encoded at 24.000 fps according to MediaInfo program. So 24.000 fps is not just in foreign (outside of the US) movies. I purchased this movie a few months ago through iTunes and had to end up turning off Match Frame rate in my Apple TV 4k because the hitching so frequently in this movie when I had that feature turned on, looked worse than 60Hz with 3:2 pulldown. Is the Blu-ray version of this film encoded at 24.000 fps also or is it 23.976 fps?

That could be it but I did watch Das Boot recently and it was seamless with Match frame rate on.

I see this as an incredibly minor issue personally, but that being said...the recently released First Blood/Rambo films on UHD are 24.00.

As I stated in the thread, 24.000 is very rare. It’s no like every foreign movie uses it.

This may vary depending on the region where you bought the movie. That said, it seems strange that they would use different framerates for different formats as well.
//edit:
I checked, you are both correct. iTunes version is 24.000 whereas as Blu-ray (US) really is 23.976.

I wouldn’t call it “incredibly minor”, but yes it’s a minor issue. However, it’s incredibly easy to add this framerate.

It’s not a minor issue. Go watch “The Idol.” Framerate skipping all over the place. That’s not minor, and it shouldn’t happen.

Everyone has different sensitivities to these things. Personally, I found it embarrassing in my movie room to display a movie lurching all over the place.

How did you verify the frame rate as being 24.000?

Just an assumption. I don't actually know for sure what frame-rate the movie was encoded at. All I do know is that Apple doesn't know what to do with movies that are (EDIT) *NOT* 23.976fps, and just outputs them poorly.

Umm no. It works perfectly fine with 23.976 fps content. It’s 24.000 content that is the (minor) issue.

With “Match Frame Rate” turned ON the Apple TV can and will properly display 23.976 content, so long as your display properly supports 23.976 content as well.

Sorry, I meant to say with movies that are NOT 23.976fps. Exactly.

And it's not a minor issue.

Right this moment I am watching my own personal backup I created of Rambo: First Blood Part I

My display has been professionally calibrated and prior to this display I did my own calibration with a high quality meter and software for years. I only mention this because I notice when something isn’t right, when something isn’t performing as it should. I’m obsessive over it. The fact that this film has been encoded at 24.000, but being presented at 23.976 by the Apple TV 4K is barely noticeable and barely is even too strong a word.

Do I hope that Apple will correct this and do I believe they should? Yes. Does it warrant all the hyperbole and dramatics we have seen in this thread or the official ATV thread? Certainly not.

Just for reference, here is how it compares to my backup of my Blu-Ray of the same movie that was released on disc in 2007.

I think something else is going on then. What you're probably seeing with Rambo is a frame skip every 41 seconds (at least, that's usually how it works). Depending on your sensitivities, you may not notice that single frame (even if it's doing it ~200 times per movie. Personally, I usually notice it depending on the type of thing happening in the scene - e.g. panning landscape). With "The Idol" (2016/2015), it's skipping ALL the time. Every 10 seconds, sometimes even less often it's literally juddering. Something is not right. I'm not sure if it's because that movie is a 25hz movie and so the issue is more pronounced. I don't know what the original was encoded at, unfortunately, as I was just renting it from the iTunes store or I'd check the file.

And yes, I tested in my theater room (JVC DLA-RS540), and on my OLED C7 - both with individual Apple TV 4Ks hooked up.

If you can spare $3.99 to rent The Idol (it's a good movie, by the way - sort of Slumdog Millionaire-esque), you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

I think I probably will check it out at some point. It does look good. When I do, I’ll enable the developer HUD on my Apple TV 4K to see what technical information it shows for the film.

The HUD is absolutely useless when it comes to framerates. It does not state what the framerate of the video is. You need mediainfo for that.

That’s your subjective opinion about the issue. For me it’s an absolute no-go as it gets me right out of the movie. I don’t expect Apple to fix it. We are talking about the “you are holding it wrong” and “that bend is totally normal during production” company. I don’t the issue being overdramatized, but one reason might be because one would except this to just work. It’s a basic feature and super easy to implement. The difficult part was implementing match framerate, adding another one is super easy.

I've seen this problem occasionally on the Apple TV 4K with some foreign content and I usually just go to the Amazon Fire 4K Stick and it handles it just fine. Most common with streaming services like MHz, Acorn, Walter Presents, and others.

I realized that after posting it. I’m working on acquiring it directly so I can examine the file itself.

The difficult part was implementing match framerate, adding another one is super easy.
So does that mean the UHD is sped up 0.1% from the original Blu-ray?

And yes it takes me right out of the movie, too. My wife knows only too well just how much I shift uncomfortably if a movie skips or drops a frame.

For me it’s hard to take anyone seriously about being enthusiasts when they don’t care about 24hz vs 23.976hz. In that Rambo, for example, it will frame skip 136 times if played on Apple TV. Once every 41 seconds for 93 minutes. That’s NOT acceptable.

But that’s why I use a Vero 4K for my own media. The Apple TV is for streaming TV. I wouldn’t dream of using it for my own media.

LongDescription : Gaza. Synonymous to so many with conflict, destruction and despair but to Mohammed Assaf, and his sister Nour, Gaza is their home and their playground. It’s where they, along with their best friends Ahmad and Omar, play music, football and dare to dream big. Their band might play on second hand, beaten up instruments but their ambitions are sky-high. For Mohammed and Nour, nothing less than playing the world famous Cairo Opera Hall will do. It might take them a lifetime to get there but, as Mohammed will find out, some dreams are worth living for. Along the way, Mohammed will experience tragedy and loss. The world around him will shatter. Through it all, however, he will somehow retain the hope that his voice will somehow deliver him from the pain that surrounds him and bring joy to others. He sings at weddings, he drives a taxi to pay for his university studies. Even as the siege around Gaza intensifies, the prison around them ever more forbidding, Mohammed knows he has a rare gift. To make people smile and forget their troubles. And so, in front of him on TV one evening lies an impossible dream: the auditions for Arab Idol, the most popular show in the Arab world, are taking place in Cairo. The borders are closed. There is no way out. Somehow, he finds a way and makes it in front of the judges in Egypt. From there, destiny awaits, a chance to change his life and give a voiceless people the greatest feeling of all: the freedom to love, live and feel free.
